Chinese Specialists Complete Rice Transplanting at Joint Demonstration Base in Honiara

Chinese Specialists Complete Rice Transplanting at Joint Demonstration Base in Honiara Since June 2026, four agricultural experts including two rice specialists, one vegetable specialist and one fertilizer specialist from Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS) have been carrying out agricultural technical assistance to Solomon Islands. After preliminary ground preparation, seedling raising, water source salinity monitoring and other foundational work, the project has fully launched hands-on rice transplanting operations and technical observation training at this stage. The rice seedlings are growing robustly in the fields after planting. Nine agronomy students from Solomon Islands National University (SINU) participated in the transplanting work, observation sessions and field management throughout the process, consolidating their professional expertise based on field practice. The rice experts coordinated both manual and mechanized rice transplanting operations, finishing transplanting across approximately one hectare of experimental and demonstration rice fields in total. Mechanized transplanting greatly boosted planting efficiency, while standardized planting ensured uniform seedling density. To systematically promote advanced seedling raising technologies, the expert team organized on-site observation seminars focusing on two seedling raising methods: water tray seedling raising and dry tray seedling raising. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock(MAL) of Solomon Islands and frontline agricultural technicians from all provinces attended the seminars. The Chinese experts gave on-site demonstrations of the full operational procedures for both tray seedling raising techniques, breaking down core technologies including seedling substrate preparation, water and fertilizer regulation, and seedling disease prevention and control. They also answered questions on site and provided hands-on guidance to participants on distinguishing robust seedlings from weak ones. All transplanted rice seedlings in the one-hectare demonstration paddy field have recovered successfully, featuring lush green leaves and normal tillering with an overall sound growth status. In the next phase, the Chinese agricultural experts team will conduct refined paddy field management, continuously monitor and control diseases, pests and weeds, and deliver tiered specialized technical training for agricultural technicians from various provinces. Meanwhile, the team will continue to guide agronomy students from SINU in daily field management, enabling them to fully master water and fertilizer management as well as integrated pest, disease and weed control techniques throughout the entire rice growth cycle. This agricultural technical assistance project is jointly supported by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Solomon Islands and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock under the long-term agricultural science and technology cooperation framework between JAAS and MAL. The project further deepens practical agricultural science and technology cooperation between China and Solomon Islands, with the aim to raise the comprehensive production capacity of rice and vegetables in Solomon Islands.

Real change starts with understanding what drives human behavior

Real change starts with understanding what drives human behavior Australia Awards alumnus Jaydee Nomisasa recently attended the ‘Asia-Pacific Meeting of the Economic Science Association’ in Melbourne, joining experts from across the region to explore how insights into human behaviour can strengthen policy outcomes. “One of the most valuable insights was that technically sound economic solutions depend on integration of knowledge across disciplines,” Jaydee shared. His takeaway? Solving complex challenges requires more than technical expertise, but also understanding the people, systems, and institutions at their heart. From mental health and healthcare to governance and economic policy, Australia Awards alumni like Jaydee are helping shape conversations that matter across the Pacific.

On 29th June, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan HORII Iwao and Hon. Peter Kenilorea Junior, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade signed and exchanged Notes for “the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship” (project up to one hundred and forty-nine million yen) and “The Economic and Social Development Programme (project up to one hundred and sixty-eight million yen). Under the Scholarship Project, young Solomon Islands government officials will study at Japanese graduate schools to obtain degrees. This is expected to contribute to human resource development and institutional building within government agencies, and to enable them to demonstrate leadership and play active roles at the core of the government in the future. Beyond this, it's also anticipated that they will build networks with Japanese government officials and others in Japan, further strengthening the friendly relations between Japan and Solomon Islands. Under the Economic and Social Development Programme, the provision of malaria diagnostic equipment are expected to enable the early detection and treatment of malaria in response to the recent surge in malaria cases, thereby reducing the risk of severe illness and mortality. During the ceremony, Hon. Kenilorea acknowledged the cooperation between the Solomon Islands Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and JICA for making the projects possible, and he emphasised that today’s signing reaffirms the enduring partnership between Japan and Solomon Islands, and our shared commitment to the well-being of the people of Solomon Islands. An article on this exchange ceremony also appears on the following website of Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. https://www.mofa.go.jp/p.../release/pressite_000001_02483.html 6月29日、ソロモン諸島首相府閣議室にて、供与額1.26億円の無償資金協力「人材育成奨学計画(The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS)」と供与額1.68億円の無償資金協力「経済社会開発計画(The Economic and Social Development Programme)」の書簡の交換(Exchange of Note: E/N)が、堀井副大臣とケニロレア外務貿易大臣代行との間で実施されました。 https://www.mofa.go.jp/.../.../release/pressit_000001_03881.html
