Court acquits Tech Hub break-in accused
after upholding no-case submission

The Honiara Magistrates' Court has acquitted the alleged principal accused in the Tech Hub shop break-in case.
This was the court found the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence requiring him to answer the charge.
Principal Magistrate Felix Hollison on Tuesday upheld the no case to answer submission.
The no case to answer submission was filed by the defence at the close of the prosecution case, for the defendant Frank Firimolea under section 197 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Magistrate Hollison dismissed the charge of housebreaking and acquitting him forthwith.
In his ruling, Magistrate Hollison said he was not satisfied that the prosecution had made out a case against Firimolea sufficiently to require him to enter a defence.
"The charge is dismissed and the defendant is acquitted forthwith," he ruled.
Firimolea had pleaded not guilty to one count of housebreaking contrary to section 300(a) of the Penal Code.
The prosecution closed its case after calling only one witness, the investigating officer in this case.
The investigating officer testified that he identified Firimolea from CCTV footage obtained from the Tech Hub shop based on the defendant's body structure and the way he walked.
He told the court the offender captured on the footage was wearing a mask that completely covered his face, but said he was confident it was Firimolea because of his physical build and manner of walking.
During cross-examination, defence counsel challenged the identification evidence, arguing that the suspect's face was entirely obscured and that no fingerprint, forensic or other scientific evidence linked Firimolea to the alleged break-in.
The court noted there was no dispute that someone had broken into the Tech Hub shop and stolen mobile phones and other property on January 31, 2025.
However, the central issue was whether the prosecution had sufficiently proved that the person shown in the CCTV footage was the defendant.
Magistrate Hollison found that the prosecution had failed to establish that crucial element.
"It is my considered view that the identification done by the only Crown witness is not sufficient and does not meet the threshold of positively identifying someone," he said, referring to the High Court decision in R v Goufi.
The magistrate also observed that while police had recovered some of the stolen property from other suspects during the investigation, no stolen items were recovered from Firimolea.
In a strongly worded ruling, Magistrate Hollison criticised both the police investigation and the prosecution's handling of the case.
"It is apparent that this case was poorly investigated which resulted in the sloppy prosecutorial work as demonstrated in this case," he said.
He added that prosecutors have a responsibility to properly assess the strength of the Crown's evidence before proceeding to trial and noted that the Criminal Procedure Code provides alternative procedures to terminate cases where the evidence is clearly insufficient.
The court also noted that the prosecution, in its written submissions responding to the defence application, acknowledged that "the evidence might not be sufficient" and left the issue for the court to determine.
The charge relates to an alleged break-in at the Tech Hub shop in Honiara between 4am and 5am on January 31, 2025.
Police alleged more than 80 mobile phones, including iPhones and a Samsung Galaxy S21, together with $560 in cash, were stolen during the incident.
Firimolea was tried separately from four co-accused, Stephen Yim, Jared Meke, Andrew Kiriau and former Tech Hub employee Jimmy Kiriau.
Their case are pending in the Honiara Magistrate’s Court awaiting the outcome of their High Court appeal challenging the admissibility of their police interview records.
Although acquitted in the Tech Hub matter, Firimolea will remain in custody over a separate criminal case pending before the Honiara Magistrates' Court.
He is jointly charged with Donsia Deresi and Rickson Suiti Abana over the alleged break-in at the Red Star Shop warehouse in Kukum on August 29, 2025.
Police allege the three men, together with others, broke into the warehouse and stole property valued at approximately $2 million, including 22 bags of beche-de-mer and $100,000 in cash.
That matter is scheduled for trial from August 31 to September 11, 2026.

Supported by the Green Climate Fund, the workshop brought together government agencies, telecommunications providers, broadcasters, development partners and technical experts, with a focus on strengthening governance arrangements, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and advancing the implementation of the Common Alerting Protocol – an internationally recognised standard that enables emergency alerts to be disseminated rapidly and consistently across multiple communication channels.
With technical support from UNDP together with the ITU, World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - UNISDR Pacific, participants will work together to strengthen Fiji’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System and ensure timely, accurate and actionable warnings reach all communities, especially those most vulnerable to disasters and climate-related hazards.
The three-day workshop will advance efforts to establish a coordinated, people-centered and multi-hazard warning dissemination system under the global Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative.

Director-General’s Desk | US Coast Guard Pacific Commander visits FFA Headquarters
FFA today welcomed United States Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander, Vice Admiral Joseph R. Buzzella, to its Headquarters in Honiara.
FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop briefed Vice Admiral Buzzella on FFA’s mandate to support its 17 Members in the sustainable management and protection of their offshore fisheries resources, including the Agency’s role in coordinating regional fisheries surveillance and facilitating information and intelligence sharing to support national enforcement efforts.
The Director-General highlighted that support from partners such as the US strengthens the capacity of FFA Members to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. He also noted that regional fisheries surveillance increasingly contributes to broader maritime domain awareness, helping Members respond to transnational organised crime, illicit drug trafficking and other maritime security threats.
Discussions also covered the changing nature of with greater risks now linked to unreported fishing activity and misreporting, rather than unlicensed fishing or fishing in unregulated areas.
Mr Pakop also outlined FFA’s proposal for a new Regional Fisheries Surveillance Centre (RFSC) facility, a project for which the Agency is currently seeking partner support. He highlighted the proposed facility’s role as a future hub for regional and international cooperation, with the additional space and capability needed to support FFA’s expanding regional surveillance operations, partnerships and information-sharing activities.
Vice Admiral Buzzella was given a tour of the RFSC, where he observed the Centre’s operations.
Vice Admiral Buzzella provided an update on the recent signing of the Shiprider Agreement between the US and Solomon Islands, noting that it will assist Solomon Islands in protecting and enforcing its sovereign rights within its exclusive economic zone.
He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Pacific Island countries in their efforts to deter and respond to IUU fishing and acknowledged the importance of fisheries to the region’s economies.
The United States is one of FFA's Pacific QUAD partners, alongside Australia, New Zealand and France. The Pacific QUADs work closely with FFA to support Pacific Island countries through aerial surveillance, maritime patrols, intelligence analysis and other operational assistance to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

AgriConnect proposed for Solomon Islands
Wednesday 29 July, Honiara – World Bank representatives have highlighted that there is an opportunity for Solomon Islands to benefit from its AgriConnect initiative.
AgriConnect is a World Bank Group initiative to help smallholder farmers move from subsistence to surplus. It is a platform that brings together farmers, business, government, and development partners to unlock opportunities across the agricultural value chain and transform agriculture to create more jobs, raise income levels for 300 million farmers, and improve global food security.
World Bank’s Senior Agriculture Specialist, Mr. Abimbola Adubi made a presentation on AgriConnect in Honiara on Friday 17 July 2025 at the Heritage Park Hotel, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Hon Franklyn Derek Wasi, Permanent Secretary, Dr Samson Viulu and officials from the Ministry and representatives from the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC) and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MOFT).
Mr. Adubi was in Honiara leading a World Bank team for the seventh implementation support mission for the Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project from 13 – 17 July, 2026.
SIART Project is a World Bank-funded initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) aiming to boost agricultural production, improve market access, and build resilient rural livelihoods across Guadalcanal, Malaita, and Makira/Ulawa provinces.
The project, which ends in December this year, centers on supporting farmers and agri-entrepreneurs through structured Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs).
With the achievements of the SIART and its sustainability in mind after the project ends, the World Bank is proposing the introduction of AgriConnect
“In terms of sustainability and next steps, this is where the element of AgriConnect becomes very important,” Mr. Adubi.
This will enhance productivity and ensure that the small and medium scale agribusinesses are functioning and are creating employment.
Minister of Agriculture, Hon Wasi made known his support towards these discussions and re-emphasized on the need for continuity in the SIART project by building on the successes and achievements of the project.
“Similar to the AgriConnect of PNG including initiatives to strengthen the commercial capacities of Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in order for them to be able to be bankable.
“Agriculture in Solomon Islands need further support in terms of economic infrastructures for value adding and post-harvest storages, reliable and affordable transport schemes, credit-worthiness for rural based entrepreneurs, access to markets through farmer-market networks and others,” the Minister said.
To date the SIART Project has established and supports the operations of 96 Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs), 45 in Malaita Province, 32 in Guadalcanal Province and 19 in Makira/Ulawa Province.
With this, there’s the opportunity to bring in the private sector based on the achievements of the SIART Project and explore how AgriConnect can come into play in Solomon Islands.
“We won’t allow the good work done by SIART to stop when the project ends. We want to find a way of resonating it and bring in private sector attention in line with the AgriConnect program,” Mr. Adubi said.
The World Bank plans to workshop the AgriConnect initiative with key stakeholders, private sector, Government and all value chain actors in Solomon Islands in the not-too-distant future.
This will create a platform of awareness to explore opportunities for the private sector to invest in the agriculture sector and play a vital role through the AgriConnect initiative in such a way that supports the creation of jobs and enhance productivity in Solomon Islands and ensure that the value chains are active.

SIART Project Delivers Lasting Benefits to Rural Farmers Ahead of Project Completion
HONIARA, Wednesday 29 July – The Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project has made significant progress in improving agricultural production and strengthening rural livelihoods across Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira/Ulawa provinces as it approaches the end of its implementation.
The achievements were highlighted during the World Bank's seventh implementation support mission to Honiara, held from 13 to 17 July 2026.
The SIART Project, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), was reviewed by a World Bank delegation led by Senior Agriculture Specialist and Task Team Leader Abimbola Adubi, alongside Senior Agriculture Specialist Allan Oliver and staff from the World Bank's Honiara Country Office.
The mission assessed progress under the project's key components, including agribusiness and infrastructure investments and institutional capacity development, to ensure implementation remains on track before the project's scheduled closure on 31 December 2026.
The review also examined procurement, financial management, environmental and social safeguard measures, as well as data collection systems and the rollout of the project's management information system. Findings from the mission were discussed with the Solomon Islands Government.
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Franklyn Derek Wasi, welcomed the progress achieved under the project, describing it as a major contribution to the country's agricultural development.
"As the SIART Project draws closer to its conclusion, I am pleased to note the steadfast progress it has made over the last year. It is our strong view that the World Bank-funded SIART Project has left a positive legacy in agricultural development in Solomon Islands," Minister Wasi said.
Under its infrastructure program, SIART is supporting the construction of new agriculture office buildings in Auki and Kirakira, the renovation of MAL's research headquarters, slaughter facility and piggery shelter at King George east of Honiara, and the detailed design of the Ministry's proposed Research Centre of Excellence at Tenaru.
The project has also established 96 Agribusiness Producer Organisations (ABPOs)—45 in Malaita, 32 in Guadalcanal and 19 in Makira/Ulawa—representing more than SBD35 million in grant investments to support rural farmers and agribusinesses.
In addition, SIART has recruited and trained more than 40 young professionals as junior extension officers. The graduates are assisting farmers, strengthening provincial agriculture offices and building local agribusiness capacity, while gaining valuable experience that could lead to future employment within the Ministry.
World Bank Task Team Leader Abimbola Adubi acknowledged the progress made since the project's inception and encouraged the Project Management Unit to maintain momentum during the final months of implementation.
Discussions are continuing on how the achievements of the project can be sustained beyond its completion and how the remaining activities can be successfully delivered.
SIART Project Manager William Okekini said the project remains on track to achieve its development objectives before it concludes at the end of the year.
"On behalf of the project team, we acknowledge the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock for your continuous support and confidence entrusted to the team to deliver positive outcomes for our rural farmers," Mr Okekini said.
The SIART Project focuses on helping farmers and agri-entrepreneurs through Agribusiness Producer Organisations by providing grants, agricultural equipment, technical support and business development assistance to help rural communities transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.
The project has also delivered extensive training programs in partnership with Ministry specialists to strengthen farming skills, business management and the long-term sustainability of rural agricultural enterprises.

Solomon Islands champions to open OFC Men’s Champions League campaign against AS Tiga Sport

Solomon Islands champions Central Coast FC now know the road they must travel in pursuit of Oceania’s biggest club football title after the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) confirmed the official match schedule for the 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League in Fiji.
According to an OFC Media release issued yesterday, the eight-team tournament will be played from August 9 to August 22 across two venues in Nadi, with Central Coast drawn in Group A alongside New Zealand powerhouse Auckland City FC, Tahiti’s AS Venus and New Caledonia’s AS Tiga Sport.
“The pre-tournament media conference for the OFC Men’s Champions League 2026 will be held at First Landing Resort at Vuda Point in Nadi at 4pm on Friday 7th August,” the statement said.
“The coaches and captains of all eight competing clubs will be in attendance, and individual interviews will also be available upon request,” it added.
For Central Coast, the campaign begins on Sunday, August 9, when they take on AS Tiga Sport at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
The Solomon Islands representatives will then face one of the tournament favourites, Auckland City FC, on Thursday, August 13, before wrapping up the group stage against Tahiti’s AS Venus on Sunday, August 16.
All three matches are expected to be crucial as only the top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, with the championship final set for Saturday, August 22.
Group B features Papua New Guinea champions Lae City FC, Cook Islands club Tupapa Maraerenga FC, Vanuatu’s Galaxy FC and hosts Rewa FC of Fiji.
The updated schedule also confirms that Fiji will host matches at Churchill Park in Lautoka and Govind Park in Ba, with the competition bringing together the champion clubs from across Oceania.
Central Coast will be aiming to build on Solomon Islands’ strong reputation in regional club football and secure a place in the knockout stage against some of the Pacific’s elite clubs.
Background: The OFC Men’s Champions League is Oceania’s premier club football competition, featuring the champion clubs from the confederation’s member associations. The 2026 edition will see eight clubs competing in two groups, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals before the continental champion is crowned on August 22 in Fiji.

Solomon Islands weightlifting veteran Jenly Wini capped her fifth Commonwealth Games appearance with a determined fifth-place finish in the women’s 53kg division at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding another commendable chapter to her distinguished career
Team Solomon confirmed the result in an update posted on its official social media platform, praising Wini’s resilience and fighting spirit throughout the competition.
Wini recorded a total lift of 172kg, made up of a 74kg snatch and a 98kg clean and jerk. She successfully lifted 95kg on her opening clean and jerk attempt, narrowly missed 98kg on her second lift before returning to successfully complete the weight on her final attempt to secure fifth place.
“On behalf of Team Solomon, we are happy with Jenly’s determination, resilience, and fighting spirit. Representing the Solomon Islands at her fifth Commonwealth Games is an achievement and another chapter in an outstanding career that continues to inspire our nation,” the Team Solomon statement said.
The statement also congratulated the veteran weightlifter for her continued commitment to the country, describing her as an inspiration to the next generation of Solomon Islands athletes.
Wini’s latest Commonwealth Games campaign once again highlighted her consistency on the international stage, having represented Solomon Islands across five editions of the Games. Her performance in Glasgow adds to an already impressive career that has seen her become one of the nation’s most accomplished and respected athletes.

Team Solomon has welcomed the strong show of support from Minister for Home Affairs Reverend Manasseh Maelanga, whose presence at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has provided a timely morale boost for the country’s athletes.
According to an update posted on the official Iumi Team Solomon social media platform, the minister has been supporting Team Solomon after attending the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, joining athletes, coaches and officials at both the boxing and weightlifting competitions.
Team Solomon said the minister’s presence had been a significant source of encouragement as the national contingent continues its campaign on the Commonwealth stage.
“Team Solomon is honoured to have the Minister for Home Affairs, Reverend Hon Manasseh Maelanga, here in Glasgow providing unwavering moral support and encouragement to our athletes during the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,” the statement said.
The team added that following his participation in the ministerial meeting, Rev. Hon. Maelanga took time to stand alongside the Solomon Islands delegation, cheering on athletes as they proudly represented the country.
“His presence has been a tremendous source of motivation for our athletes, coaches, and officials as they proudly represent the Solomon Islands on the Commonwealth stage,” the statement said.
During the Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, held from July 21 to 22, ministers and senior officials from across the Commonwealth discussed the role of sport in promoting sustainable development, inclusion, integrity, youth engagement and climate resilience.
The statement said Maelanga contributed to discussions on sport integrity and the future direction of the Commonwealth Games, reaffirming Solomon Islands’ commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, safeguarding, anti-doping measures and equal opportunities in sport.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring the Commonwealth Games remains accessible to all member nations while supporting efforts to further improve the quality and profile of the event.
The minister further commended the Glasgow 2026 Organising Committee for successfully delivering the Games within a limited preparation period and encouraged continued support to ensure equal participation opportunities for all Commonwealth nations at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India.
“As Team Solomon continues its campaign in Glasgow, we sincerely thank Reverend Hon Manasseh Maelanga for taking the time to be with us, celebrate with us, and inspire our athletes through his presence and encouragement,” the statement said.
Team Solomon is currently competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games across several sporting codes, with Solomon Islands athletes continuing their quest to deliver strong performances while proudly representing the nation on the international stage.
