A one-week training for provincial-based reporters kicked off yesterday at the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) office.
The training, supported by BBC Media Action, focuses on verifying and fact-checking information, and aims to equip and expand the knowledge and skills of reporters as the use of social media rises.
President of the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI), Ofani Eremae, welcomed the reporters and urged them to take this opportunity to learn something new and make the most of the week.
He thanked BBC Media Action for their support in making the training possible for the provincial reporters.
“I understand that nowadays, we know everything is migrating from physical space to online space, and I urge all of you to make the most of this week and learn as much as you can,” he said.
“Also, I want to thank Adrian Sina for his relationship with the BBC that made this training possible for you (provincial), even though similar training was held earlier this year for the Honiara-based reporters.”
He added that it’s also a great chance for the provincial-based reporters to ask and share their views and issues faced in the provinces.
“On behalf of MASI, I want to extend my acknowledgment to the BBC Media Action for making the training workshop possible,” he said.
Editors of Island Sun, Irwin Angiki, and SIBC, Fredrick Kusu, are the trainers. Adrian Sina, BBC MA’s project coordinator facilitates.
Seven participants from Western, Choiseul and Malaita provinces represent Island Sun, SIBC, Solomon Star and a freelancer.
The current session follows a similar one held in May this year for Honiara-based reporters.
The training concludes on Saturday, August 1.

Prime Minister Matthew Wale has hit back at Opposition Leader Manasseh Sogavare's criticism of the proposed Shiprider Agreement with the United States, rejecting claims that it would undermine Solomon Islands' sovereignty.
Responding to Mr Sogavare's warning that the agreement would amount to surrendering sovereign control over the country's waters, Mr Wale said the exact opposite is true.
He said the agreement enables us to exercise "the sovereignty of our laws" rather than override them.
Sisters of Malaita Christian Care
Centre Learn Sewing Skills
The Sisters of the Malaita Christian Care Centre (MCCC) recently welcomed Australian Rotarians Vera Liondas and Rhonda Whitton to their Auki community house in Malaita to teach sewing skills to seven Sisters from Auki and Honiara.
During their stay the Sisters sew children’s clothes, shirts, bags and other items that will be used by their domestic violence clients as well as to fundraise for their community projects.
While some Sisters had sewing experience, others learned the basics about patterns, garment construction, fabric and machine maintenance.
Their range of skills increased by the day and, at the end of the project, the Sisters had produced an impressive 61 items.
On their final day of training Sr Doreen Awaiasi welcomed MCCC supporters to a ceremony to present Certificates of Achievement to the seven Sisters.
“The skills learned by our Sisters will enable them to pass on life skills to our domestic violence clients. This has been an important program for our community”, said Sr Doreen.
Guests at the ceremony included: Fr Stan Ball Kuru, Mission Secretary of the Diocese of Malaita; Delilah, Mother’s Union President; and local police officers including Sgt George Pungi, the MCCC Male Advocate.
As part of Rotary International’s SewAid project, Rotarians Vera and Rhonda have carried out similar SewAid projects in many Oceania countries. Both agreed their Solomon Island experience has been the most rewarding.
The machines and equipment were donated to MCCC by SewAid founder Rotarian Tony Castley and will stay with the Sisters to continue their domestic violence support work.

Malaita Christian Care Centre Learn Sewing Skills

Australian Students Visit SI
From 8-19 July a group of students from Australia visited Honiara during their vacation and as part of an exchange program.
The students were from Canberra Girls Grammar School [CGGS] and Marist College Canberra.
During the trip they have engaged with local communities and education facilities to work with and walk alongside Solomon Islanders.
CGGS has enjoyed their time visiting Amoana Christian School, the Christian Care Centre and attending Mass at All Saint's Church.
They also spent two days with students at DIVIT Rural Training Centre.
The group of expert teachers from Marist College Canberra also delivered teacher education workshops to teachers serving under the Catholic Education Provider on topics such as Explicit Teaching and Artificial Intelligence.
The group of 10 students from Marist College Canberra have also visited communities during the visit the 12 days visit.
They have loved their time at Matariau Village in West Kola and San Isidro Care Centre, Aruligo, Northwest Guadalcanal.
It is wonderful to see students from all walks of life sharing time together to play sports, laugh, sing and dance.
Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral was a moving experience for the students with the passionate singing connecting each student with their faith.
During their time in Honiara they also spent time at St Joseph's Tenaru, Mercy School Burns Creek and visiting Seif Ples Domestic Violence Centre.
The students also thanked the Tafivaka dancers for their wonderful performance, the Solomon Islands Basketball Federation [SIBF] for organising a friendly game with their students and also the Bishop Epalle Catholic Youth group for their time.
They expressed that Solomon Islands is such a wonderful country with faith-filled and generous people who have opened their hearts to Australian students.
“We are beyond grateful for people's time, generosity and willingness to teach us about culture.
“Thank you to Lionel Rifasia from Fake White Transport for his logistics and to Fred and Rollings for driving us around,” they expressed.

SMASH DOWN BARRIERS DISABILITY TABLE
TENNIS PROGRAMME READY TO RESUME

The Smash Down Barriers (SDB) disability table tennis programme is set to resume following the mid year academic break, with activities scheduled for the third quarter from July to September 2026.
SDB Programme Manager Kevin Olea confirmed to Star Sports over the weekend that staff and the programmes sports development officer have used the break to visit schools, communities and special development centres in preparation for the programme’s resumption.
The visits are part of efforts to strengthen the programme’s outreach and ensure more people with disabilities, young women and girls can benefit from inclusive sporting activities.
The Smash Down Barriers programme aims to create safe and inclusive spaces for persons with disabilities, young women and girls, while promoting improved quality of life through participation in sport.
The programme also seeks to increase physical activity among children with disabilities, young women and girls, encouraging them to take part in sport and recreational activities in a supportive environment.
With the programme now ready to resume, SDB is expected to continue using table tennis as a tool to promote inclusion, physical well-being and greater participation for people who often face barriers to accessing sport.

The Smash Down Barriers (SDB) Table Tennis Programme has farewelled two sports development officers and nearly eight technical volunteers who are leaving the country to pursue further studies and career pathways overseas.
Programme Manager Kevin Olea confirmed that Sports Development Officers Rondy Mani and Jehan Patrick, together with the volunteers, have departed Solomon Islands to continue their academic journeys.
Mani has travelled to Laucala, Fiji, to study at the University of the South Pacific, while Patrick has headed to Apia, Samoa, to pursue Agriculture Business studies at the University of the Pacific branch campus.
Olea commended the departing staff and volunteers for their valuable contributions to the programme during their time with SDB.
He said the skills and training gained through their involvement in the programme would add value to their personal growth, professional development and future careers.
One of the programme's key objectives is to support staff and volunteers to excel in their academic fields while gaining valuable work experience and personal development.
To date, the programme has engaged eight sports development officers and 40 volunteers.
Olea also acknowledged the Australian Government for its continued support towards the Team Up and Smash Down Barriers programmes, saying the support has helped empower staff and volunteers to become more responsible and confident young men and women, while also supporting persons with disabilities.
Meanwhile, Olea said the programme is looking forward to farewelling more volunteers later this week as they prepare to continue their studies abroad.
He also confirmed that volunteer application forms are available for interested individuals of both genders, with persons with disabilities encouraged to apply and become part of the programme.

SI Rangers benefit from direct support funded by international grants for Community-Based Conservations
Two community based conservations in Western Province have received much-needed conservation relief assets and supplies on Friday 24th 2026 following the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila in early April.
The first two Community-based conservations to receive their equipment and supplies are; Sirubai Voko Tribe Association (SVTA) from Vella Island and Kinulukulu Conservation Association (KCA) from Marovo lagoon.
Officers from the Solomon Islands Rangers Association on Monday 20th July completed the final list of recipients of the conservation equipment and assets to eight (8) affected community-based conservations (CBCs) in western and Choiseul province who affiliated to SI Rangers Association.
The conservation relief supplies included bush knives, grass-cutters, generators, laptops, underwater cameras, overhead projectors, diving snorkels, solar lights, camping lights (torch), tape measures (50m), waterproof bags (20L), Samsung Smart phones, rangers shirts, Rain coats, Eskies, storage containers and Iron roofings & nails.
The Si Rangers Association has secured these items through Thin Green Line (TGL) Response Grant and IUCN Netherlands Green Lifeline Action Fund.
TGL Response Grant is frequently associated with Ranger Support Grants or Emergency Response/Fallen Ranger Grants provided by The Thin Green Line Foundation—is financial assistance to protect and support park and wildlife rangers.
While the IUCN Netherlands National Committee (IUCN NL) Green Lifeline Action Fund is an emergency support mechanism that provides rapid grants and assistance to environmental defenders and civil society organizations facing urgent threats.
The SI Rangers Association Program Manager, Edward Haikau Huitarau said the distribution targeted community based conservations identified through assessments conducted after the cyclone.
Huitarau said beneficiaries included affiliated conservation members.
The destruction of rangers stations and conservation facilities has hindered rangers work in the last three months and sparked great concerns, including species disturbance and moving from their habitats.
Huitarau also said, “this is part of our Recovery and Intervention Strategy where our Intervention Action Plan is Supplying field equipment to local rangers to accelerate the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and operational assets, with an Anticipated Outcomes to Reopen our affiliated community based conservation areas and ensuring a secure, safe environment for rangers.”
Saltwater intrusion and heavy debris have destroyed turtle nesting grounds and hatcheries and polluted drinking water, leaving remote community rangers at risk of severe food and water shortages.
Damage to rangers facilities and assests like; laptops, cameras, grass cutters, generators, storage containers, GPS, mobiles, tape measures, ranger finders, boats, rangers houses and rangers petrol sheds has disrupted critical services.
Vice Chairman Mr. Felix Naitoro and Board member Mr. Atkinson Do’oro acknowledged the support of donor partners and the efforts of rangers in Western and Choiseul Province who assisted to assessments at their respective affected community based conservations.
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Mr. Atkinson Do’oro who is one of the Board members witnessing this handing over to the first two CBCs acknowledged Edward Huitarau and his staff for the leadership in securing such opportunity coming at the right time.
These equipments and supplies were made possible by our two donor partners upon our grant proposal request, Huitarau said.

PM Wale Reaffirms China Partnership, Says Solomon Islands Not Interested in Geopolitical Rivalry
Prime Minister Matthew Wale says China remains an important trading partner and a key development partner for Solomon Islands, reaffirming his Government's commitment to maintaining strong relations with all its international partners.
Speaking to reporters upon his return from official visits to the United States and Japan today, Wale stressed that Solomon Islands has no interest in becoming entangled in geopolitical competition.
"China remains an important trading partner and an important overall partner to Solomon Islands," the Prime Minister said.
"We are not in the geopolitical game; we are not interested," he told reporters.
Wale said his Government's priority is to pursue partnerships that advance the country's national development and improve the lives of Solomon Islanders, regardless of global power rivalries.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister expressed optimism about the nation's future, saying he believes Solomon Islands has the potential to attain middle-income country status within the next 10 to 15 years through sustained economic growth and strategic partnerships.

SICF INCLUSIVE CRICKET FESTIVAL

The Solomon Islands Cricket Federation (SICF) has successfully staged its Inclusive Cricket Festival at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS) over the weekend.
SICF President Sajeewa Liyanage told Star Sports the festival brought together participants from different backgrounds, including students from two disability schools, Red Cross and San Isidoro Disability School.
The festival featured fun activities for the participating students, along with cricket exhibition matches in the senior open categories.
The men's exhibition match featured Solomon Kings taking on Striking Brothers, while the women's category also featured an exhibition match as part of the festival program.
Liyanage said the event also included community awareness and engagement activities aimed at promoting inclusion and participation through cricket.
He said the women's exhibition match was particularly significant, as it marked the first time some of the female participants had played a cricket match.
"For the women's category, this is their first cricket game," Liyanage said.
The festival provided an opportunity for participants to enjoy cricket in a fun and inclusive environment, with activities throughout the day creating an atmosphere of excitement and engagement.
Liyanage said the successful staging of the festival demonstrated the important role sport can play in bringing people together and creating opportunities for everyone to participate.
He thanked all participants for their time and effort in making the festival a success.
The SICF president also acknowledged the support of the Australian Government for its assistance towards the successful staging of the Inclusive Cricket Festival.

男子表演赛中,所罗门国王队对阵打击兄弟队,而女子类别也在节日活动中举行了一场表演赛。

THE Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) issued an Orange Alert for waters of Western, Makira, Temotu, Rennell/Bellona provinces and the southern waters of Guadalcanal and Russell Islands, warning that strong winds could capsize small boats over the next 24 hours.
Impact Based Warning Number Ninety-Nine was issued at 4pm yesterday, Friday 24th July 2026.
According to the warning, a general southeast to southwest wind flow is affecting the Solomon Islands and winds are expected to reach 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 25 knots over areas covered by the alert.
SIMS said seas will become moderate to rough, with moderate south to southeast swells of 2.5 metres, and warns of poor visibility in shower areas.
The warning was rated as High likelihood with significant impact on the service’s risk matrix, placing it at Medium risk overall.
The corresponding response level was set at “Be Prepared”, one level below the highest “Take Action” category.
SIMS said small boats are likely to capsize in the forecasted conditions and urges sea travellers to consider safety actions, as winds can produce dangerous wave conditions, hazardous to small vessels.
People in the affected areas have been advised to take precautionary measures, as strong winds have the potential to impact lives and property. SIMS noted that this warning be shared with people with disabilities.
The public is also urged to stay informed and prepared, and to listen to SIBC and other media outlets for further updates.
