A team from the Malaita Provincial Government, led by Premier Elijah Asilaua, will visit the Republic of Korea this week.
The visit was made possible after the World Evangelisation Evangelism Alliance (WEEA) from the Republic of Korea visited Malaita Province earlier this year.
As part of the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between WEEA, a Non-Profit Incorporated Association of the Republic of Korea, and Malaita Province.
A statement from the Malaita Provincial Government indicated that the benefits of the MoU have been outlined in eight articles.
It stated that out of the eight articles, the MoU will develop remnant talents, advance education, promote community welfare, and enhance international cooperation in Malaita Province through mutual trust and cooperation.
During the first visit by the World Evangelisation Evangelism Alliance (WEEA) to Malaita Province, they also sealed a partnership agreement with two schools in the province.
The visit by the Malaita provincial government aims to strengthen the relationship between the Malaita Provincial Government and the World Evangelisation Evangelism Alliance.

Prime Minister Matthew Wale this week described his official visits to the United States and Japan as “productive and fruitful”, saying they have strengthened Solomon Islands’ bilateral relationships and opened new opportunities for the country’s development priorities.
Speaking to the media on his return to Honiara on Monday this week, Prime Minister Wale said discussions with leaders and development partners focused on resetting relationships and securing support for the Government’s development agenda.
“I am happy to be back home, and I hope the visits to the United States and Japan will prove to be productive and very fruitful in terms of resetting our relationships with both countries and advancing our development aspirations,” Mr Wale said.
A key outcome of the visit, according to the Prime Minister, was renewed interest in the Bina Harbour Project, which he described as one of the Government’s highest priorities.
“I have given a very firm commitment to move Bina from a greenfield site to the development stage,” he said.
Wale explained that the initial phase will involve the construction of essential infrastructure, including a wharf, jetty, port facilities, fuel storage, water and energy systems, and road access.
“Once that foundation is in place, we want to attract the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and private sector investors to establish local processing facilities and factories,” he said.
The Prime Minister said government officials are now working to prepare a bankable project proposal before a United States assessment team visits Solomon Islands towards the end of August.
“We need to ensure we have all the information required. When the assessment team arrives, we must be ready with a bankable project to present,” he said.
He also welcomed the positive response from the United States towards supporting the Bina project.
“I am encouraged by the spirit of support we received from the United States. Now our officials, together with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and other partners supporting Bina, must continue the work. Bina is a critical project for our country’s future,” he said.
On relations with Japan, the Prime Minister said the visit reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between the two countries after recent challenges.
“Japan has been a reliable partner of Solomon Islands for many years. There have been disappointments in the relationship, but we have overcome those issues and realigned our bilateral partnership in the way it should be,” he said.
He said Japan had reaffirmed its commitment to support Solomon Islands through concessional financing and investment in education infrastructure.
He revealed that discussions were held with the Sasakawa Foundation and the Nippon Foundation on plans to establish a new international-standard educational institution focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
“We are discussing the details, and when their chief executive visits next month, we will continue those discussions. We want an international-level institution that can help achieve our STEM skills objectives,” he said.
He said the goodwill shown by both the United States and Japan demonstrats strong confidence in Solomon Islands and its future.
“The goodwill we received was extremely positive. As a small country, we want to be a reliable partner to everyone,” he said.
He stressed that improving relations with the United States and Japan does not come at the expense of Solomon Islands’ relationship with China.
“This is not to exclude China or anyone else. China remains an important trade partner and an important partner overall. We will continue to strengthen that relationship as well,” he said.
He reiterated that Solomon Islands will continue to pursue an independent foreign policy centred on national interests rather than geopolitical rivalry.
“We are not interested in the geopolitical game. Let the big powers deal with those issues. Our focus is on what is best for Solomon Islands and lifting our country over the next 10 to 15 years,” he said.
He expressed confidence that with sound leadership, good governance and the right economic policies, Solomon Islands can achieve middle-income status.
“We can become a middle-income country, and we will. With good government, strong leadership, resolve and purpose, we will achieve it,” he said.

Some of FFA’s senior staff yesterday completed a Policy Workshop focused on strengthening the way policies are developed, approved and implemented across the Secretariat.
Opening the workshop, Director-General Noan David Pakop highlighted the importance of a clear and consistent policy framework as a foundation of a strong organisation, supporting good governance, accountability and effective decision-making.
The workshop followed the recent approval of a Policy Administration Review, and the KPMG Refresh Review, which identified the need to strengthen FFA's policy framework.
Throughout the day, participants worked through practical exercises using existing policies to test new templates and processes that will guide future policy development, review and approval.
The workshop marks the beginning of a refreshed approach to policy across the Secretariat, helping ensure FFA’s policies are clear, consistent and fit for purpose.

The United States will send an assessment team to Solomon Islands towards the end of August as part of efforts to move the Bina Harbour Project from a greenfield site to a development-ready stage, Prime Minister Matthew Wale said upon his arrival home yesterday afternoon.
Mr Wale, who returned from official visits to the United States and Japan, said the Bina Harbour Project had drawn strong US interest, with a firm commitment, subject to further detail, to help the project reach the stage of having a wharf, jetty, port, fuel storage, water, energy and supporting roads in place.
“That means it goes from where we are only pushing and talking but nothing is actually done, to having a wharf, jetty, port, fuel storage, water, energy, supported basic roads,” he said.
Wale said officials now need to prepare a “bankable project” package ahead of the August visit, working alongside the International Finance Corporation (IFC), New Zealand and other partners already engaged on Bina.
He said the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and American private sector companies had also expressed interest in factory and processing development linked to the project.
Bina Harbour featured prominently in Wale’s meetings with US officials in Washington, including with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, the Development Finance Corporation and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, alongside a private sector roundtable hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the US side had been disappointed he did not have the Bina Harbour project documents with him during the visit, as they had hoped to move towards construction next year.
“I am happy to know the spirit they have to support us, and also the spirit we have to get it done,” Wale said, adding that no funding agreement had yet been signed but that he remained confident.
“We now need to get our officials to work in IFC and New Zealand and those that stand with us. So, Bina is a critical one, and I’m very confident,” he said.

Newly appointed Director General Welcomed

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat has formally welcomed its newly appointed Director General, Dr. Anna Naupa, as she assumes her official duties today, 27 July 2026, at the MSG Secretariat headquarters in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
It marks an important moment for the Secretariat and for the wider Melanesian family, as the organisation continues to advance the shared priorities of its Member Countries and uphold the founding values of Melanesian solidarity, cooperation, respect, and collective progress.
This historic appointment also marks Dr. Naupa as the first female and first ni-Vanuatu Director General of the MSG Secretariat, an achievement that carries profound significance and offers renewed hope and inspiration to women and girls across Melanesia.
Mr. Ilan Kiloe, from Solomon Islands who served as Acting Director General during the transition period, extended his warm congratulations to Dr. Naupa and reaffirmed the Secretariat’s full support for her leadership.
“The Secretariat looks forward to working under Dr. Naupa’s leadership as we continue to advance the shared priorities of our Member Countries and strengthen Melanesian solidarity,” said Mr. Kiloe.
As the Secretariat enters this new chapter, it reaffirms its commitment to teamwork, transparency, and transformative action across the foundational pillars of political, economic, and cultural cooperation.
In assuming office during Vanuatu’s independence anniversary period, Dr. Naupa acknowledged the enduring wisdom, strength, and courage of the region’s founding leaders, whose vision continues to guide the collective aspirations of Melanesia.
Dr. Naupa also reflected on her personal connection to Vanuatu’s national journey, recalling the public service of her late father, who served as Minister of Health and Minister of Public Works, and the contribution of her mother as an educator/Teacher at Malapoa College, where many of Vanuatu’s contemporary leaders were shaped.
Outlining her immediate strategic priorities, Dr. Naupa emphasized her commitment to strengthening the Secretariat’s Corporate Services, Political, and Trade programmes to better serve the MSG membership and support the implementation of Leaders’ decisions.

Work is ongoing to fast track the legislative and policy reform program of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE), with consultation with the Policy, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (PIMEU), of the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet (OPMC) having been held last week.
The Legislative and Policy Cabinet Sub-Committee provides in-house legal and policy support to ministries to ensure priority legislation and policy reforms are developed and implemented promptly.
A statement from MMERE said Sub-Committee Chair, Francis Waleanisia, welcomed the commitment.
“I am very pleased with the Permanent Secretary and his senior management team. Their willingness to engage reflects the Prime Minister’s call for everyone to work hard to deliver meaningful change. Real change does not happen by magic — we all have a responsibility to play our part in making it happen,” Mr Waleanisia said.
He said the collaborative engagement between the Prime Minister’s Office political unit and line ministries represents a new approach to supporting Government reforms.
“This kind of engagement between the PMO political unit and ministries is new to all of us, but I believe it is the right approach to driving progress and ensuring Government priorities are translated into action,” he said.
Mr Waleanisia noted that mining remains a key priority for the Government, making the completion of the Minerals Bill 2025 a matter of urgency.
“Mining is a major focus for the present Government. Finalising the review of the Minerals Bill 2025 is therefore a priority,” he said.
The statement said other priority reforms include new legislative and policy frameworks for electricity, water, petroleum and gas, geological surveys, and institutional strengthening.
Mr Waleanisia also added that reforms are necessary to respond to emerging national challenges, including the impacts of climate change, the rising cost of living, the increasing availability of affordable alternative energy sources, rapid technological advancement, and the need to strengthen institutional frameworks.
The ongoing consultations are expected to modernise MMERE’s legislative and policy framework to better address these challenges while supporting sustainable development and economic growth.
On the implementation timeline, Mr Waleanisia acknowledged that the programme is operating under demanding deadlines.
“We have been given very tight deadlines, so the positive response and commitment demonstrated by the Permanent Secretary and his senior staff are both encouraging and reassuring. With this level of cooperation, I am confident we can make significant progress,” he said.
The Sub-Committee comprises of Francis Waleanisia, Ronald Dive and Yvonne Ogaoga — all experienced legal practitioners with expertise in litigation, legislative review and policy development.
It is also supported by two legislative drafters from the Attorney General’s Chambers Drafting Division, Kerrie Faradatolo and Doris Tabepuda.

Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI) Chairman Mr. Limahl Totogi has challenged young people to dream big, embrace opportunities and never be afraid of failure as the Kaloka Youth Association officially launched its inclusive website yesterday at Pagoda hub in East Honiara.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the launch, Mr. Totogi described the occasion as a historic milestone for the Isabel youth association, saying the new website will open doors to greater visibility, partnerships and digital opportunities.
“Today is a historic milestone for the Kaloka Youth Association. Having a website is a major achievement because it provides an official platform for people to learn about your organisation, your work and your achievements,” Mr. Totogi said.
He said while social media platforms such as Facebook are widely used, a dedicated website provides a more professional and credible platform to share information and attract supporters and development partners.
“A website is your official platform. It allows you to tell your story, promote your culture, showcase your projects and provide a place where supporters and donors can learn more about your association,” he said.
He urged the association to ensure the website remains active by regularly publishing stories, photographs and updates on its activities.
“Do not let the website remain empty. Continue to populate it with your activities, achievements and success stories. Keep it alive because it represents your organisation to the world,” he said.
He encourages members to use the website as a tool for marketing local products and promoting digital entrepreneurship among young people.
“This is the beginning of digital entrepreneurship for Kaloka Youth. Your website can become a marketplace where young people promote their businesses, products and services while developing valuable digital skills,” he said.
He said the launch demonstrates that Kaloka Youth is creating opportunities instead of waiting for them.
“Kaloka Youth is not waiting for opportunities—you are creating opportunities. By launching this website, you have created new opportunities not only for your members but also for young people throughout Isabel Province,” he said.
He encourages the association to continue pursuing ambitious goals despite challenges.
“Dream big, be willing to try and never be afraid to fail. Those are the steps that lead to growth and help us find solutions for our young people,” he said.
He said the website will serve as a central platform where the association could publish its news and direct visitors from social media to its official online presence.
“Use Facebook to share the links, but let your website be the home of your stories. That way, people will always come back to your official platform to see your work,” he said.
He also calls on young people to develop digital skills to ensure the website remains relevant and informative.
“Young people should build the skills needed to create content and manage this platform. Digital skills will become an important part of youth development and future opportunities,” he said.
Reaffirming YECSI’s commitment, Mr. Totogi said the organisation will continue to support Kaloka Youth Association and other youth organisations across the country.
“As your partner, we will continue to support your initiatives and work together to ensure young people achieve their goals. Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow—they are also the leaders of today,” he said.
The launch of the inclusive website marks a significant step in Kaloka Youth Association’s efforts to embrace digital innovation, strengthen communication with its members and partners, and promote youth development initiatives in Isabel Province and across Solomon Islands.
