Three Repaired Timber Bridges Reopened in East Kwara’ae
Three timber bridges serving communities in East Kwara’ae have officially reopened after undergoing repair and maintenance works, improving road safety and transport access along the Ward 15 and 16 road networks.
The bridges, located at Nazareth, Gethsemane and Foubaba, were repaired by Radiant Enterprise, a local community construction group from East Malaita. The reopening ceremony was held last Friday following the completion of the works earlier this year.
The bridges had deteriorated over time, raising safety concerns for motorists and other road users. Under the repair contract, workers replaced damaged bridge decking and strips, reinforced log girders, repaired bridge abutments, and carried out scour control works to improve the structures' stability and durability.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Radiant Enterprise Managing Director Andrew Siru thanked the Government for funding the project and enabling the rehabilitation of the three bridges.
Mr. Siru also called on nearby communities to take ownership of the infrastructure by helping to protect and maintain the bridges, noting that they play a vital role in connecting East Kwara’ae with East Kwaio and providing access to markets, essential services, Auki and other parts of Malaita Province.
He said the project has also been an important milestone for Radiant Enterprise as an emerging civil construction group, providing valuable practical experience and strengthening the company's confidence to undertake larger infrastructure projects in the future.
Mr. Siru added that the successful completion of the works reflects the Government's commitment to promoting local content and empowering local contractors to participate in national development.
The official reopening ceremony was attended by officers from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), representatives of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force based in Auki, traditional chiefs and members of the surrounding communities, who welcomed the completion of the much-needed repairs.

Pelican 3 had to cut short its maiden voyage to Western province over the weekend due to a major mechanical fault resulting in its passengers having to be transferred to Pelican 1 to complete their journey.
Passengers travelling on the maiden voyage of MV Pelican 3 to Western and Choiseul provinces over the weekend were safely transferred to another vessel after the ship developed a technical fault in Marovo Lagoon.
The incident forced the vessel to make a precautionary stop at Gasini after its control and monitoring system malfunctioned.
According to Pelican Shipping Services (PSS) official Facebook page over the weekend, the problem was not related to the vessel’s engines or propulsion system, despite speculation on social media.
“Our main engines and propulsion units operated normally throughout the incident, and the vessel remained under full control at all times,” PSS said.
PSS said its technical team responded quickly and restored basic system functions before MV Pelican 1 arrived at Gasini to continue the journey.
“Departure proceeded after all passengers were safely embarked to ensure they reached their destinations as scheduled,” the statement said.
MV Pelican 3 will now return to Honiara for a full engineering inspection to determine the cause of the system failure.
The statement said the vessel will not return to service until all safety and compliance requirements have been fully met.
PSS apologises to passengers for the disruption and said it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of maritime safety and reliable service.

Small Malaita Constituency strengthens road development with new machinery handover The Small Malaita Constituency has taken another major step toward improving rural infrastructure with the dedication and official handover of four new road machines, which will enhance road construction and maintenance across the constituency. The machinery includes one road grader and one road roller funded by the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with two dump trucks funded by the Solomon Islands Government (SIG) through the 2025 Constituency Development Funds (CDF). During a recent handover ceremony, Honourable Rick Hou, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade and Member of Parliament for Small Malaita, described the event as a landmark investment in the constituency's future. "Today is more than the handover of machinery. It is an investment in our people's future. Good roads connect communities, improve access to schools and health services, create economic opportunities, and bring government services closer." Hon. Hou thanked China for its support and acknowledged the Solomon Islands Government for complementing the initiative through the CDF program. "The partnership between the Solomon Islands Government and China continues to deliver practical development that directly benefits our people. Together, we are building infrastructure that will serve Small Malaita for many years." Representatives from the Ueniusu-Unu Tribes of Roone Village expressed their appreciation, saying the machinery brings hope to communities that have endured poor road access for years. "We sincerely thank Hon. Rick Hou for making this possible. Better roads will improve transportation, help farmers reach markets, enable children to travel to school safely, and give rural communities easier access to health services." Central Kwara’ae Constituency delivers 115 community projects, wraps up 2025 CDF program implementation
The Central Kwara’ae Constituency (CKC) office, under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Infrastructure Development Ricky Fuo’o, has successfully completed its 2025 Constituency Development Program, delivering a total of 155 community projects. This was made possible with a $5 million allocation of the 2025 budget, comprising $3.2 million under the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) Preferred Supplier Arrangement (PSA) component and $1.8 million as a grant to CKC, in accordance with CDF Act 2023 guidelines. Constituency Development Officer (CDO) Kevin Fuo’o said beneficiaries mainly include churches, schools, clinics, and various community facilities, including water supply projects supporting the constituency’s basic infrastructure development needs. “This achievement underscores the constituency office’s commitment under Honourable Fuo’o’s leadership for inclusive and sustainable community development for Central Kwa’arae. “This is our ongoing efforts to fill the gaps in development needs particularly with small community infrastructure which are essential to support in livelihoods and improvement of general community living standards,” CDO Fuo’o said. Community leaders and recipients expressed gratitude and optimism about their project allocations. David Idu from Aisalinga Community thanked the government and their Member of Parliament for support with hardware materials to help complete their kindergarten and church rest house projects. “This support is the first of its kind for us. It will help improve education and community development. On behalf of our community, we truly appreciate it,” he said. Lemuel Lau, Chairman of Ere’eresuli Extension Primary School, shared similar sentiments after receiving materials for their school project. Betty Gwari from Gwareasi Community also acknowledged her Member of Parliament for providing materials for their guest house project. Allen Billy, Chairman of Ngadaifiu Primary School, received building materials for their school project and expressed hope for further support and collaboration with the constituency office. Pastor Ismael Adu from Radefasu Local Church expressed gratitude, noting that the support was unprecedented for their community. “We received $69,000 worth of materials for our church project. This is a significant help. On behalf of our church, we thank the government and our Member of Parliament for their support,” he said. Other community leaders and constituents also shared similar sentiments and welcomed the interventions, noting they will improve access to quality education, healthcare, and social and spiritual spaces, fostering long-term community empowerment and better basic services across Central Kwara’ae. CDO Fuo’o called the project distribution a pivotal step in the constituency’s development journey and reaffirmed the office’s commitment to community development. “The CKC Office remains committed to delivering transformative projects that encourage sustainable growth and improve constituents’ wellbeing,” he stated. “Our team is working diligently to ensure infrastructure reaches all communities, supporting inclusive development and better service delivery.” He emphasized that these efforts focus on strengthening essential services and improving living standards, maintaining close coordination with community leaders for fair, transparent, and timely distribution. He also highlighted that road infrastructure remains a top priority for Central Kwara’ae, particularly the upgrade of feeder roads, which are critical to improving connectivity, stimulating local economic activities, and enhancing the overall resilience of rural communities, revealing that the 2024 CDF allocation for CKC was fully dedicated to road upgrades, including Busurata, South Road, and Fulisango roads. The CKC Office urged beneficiaries to use resources responsibly and maintain facilities for long-term community benefit. “Let’s continue working together for our constituency’s progress,” CDO Fuoo encouraged. He said that communities were excited about their projects, which aim to enhance social and economic livelihoods. Mr. Fuoo also acknowledged the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) for its ongoing support and thanked the people of CKC for their patience despite delays. This project delivery reflects the government’s commitment to rural development through MRD, supporting livelihoods even in small ways. “This support aims to improve lives in remote communities. Despite limited resources, the government remains dedicated to assisting constituency offices in development efforts.” The CDO expressed gratitude to the national government and Honourable Minister Ricky Fuoo for their unwavering support of the Constituency Development Program, which funds various community initiatives nationwide. CDO Fuo’o stated that 2026 projects will be delivered once funds are allocated by the government. CDF is the financing component of the Solomon Islands Government’s (SIG) Constituency Development Program, administered by MRD and implemented across 50 constituencies to improve livelihoods. SIMA Moves to Strengthen Safety at Taro Port

The Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) has successfully completed a Simplified IALA Risk Assessment (SIRA) workshop for Taro Port, marking an important step towards improving maritime safety and navigation in Choiseul province.
The one-day workshop, held on Thursday this week, brought together representatives from the provincial government, port users, small boat operators, and other stakeholders to identify navigational risks and assess the adequacy of existing safety measures at Taro Port.
Speaking during the workshop, SIMA Senior Safety Navigation Officer under Environment Protection and Safety, Patrick Wamahe, said the assessment was designed to identify navigation hazards and determine whether existing aids to navigation are adequate to support safe vessel operations.
Wamahe said the SIRA process examines vessel movements, local navigation conditions, weather and visibility and other factors that may affect the safety of vessels, passengers and cargo.
He explained that aids to navigation, including lights, beacons, navigation marks and other systems, are critical in guiding vessels safely, particularly in areas with reefs, shallow waters and other maritime hazards.
He stressed that local knowledge plays a key role in the assessment, saying the experiences of provincial authorities, small boat operators, and surrounding communities provide valuable information that helps SIMA identify practical challenges and develop appropriate safety improvements.
Participants welcomed the initiative, saying the assessment provided an important platform for stakeholders to share their concerns and contribute directly to improving navigation safety.
They expressed confidence that the findings would help guide future improvements to navigational aids and enhance the safety of passengers, vessels and cargo using Taro Port.
Wamahe said all findings and recommendations from the assessment will be documented and used by SIMA to prioritise future improvements to aids to navigation and other maritime safety measures.
He said the assessment is expected to support safer vessel operations, improve access to Taro Port, protect lives and property, and contribute to the protection of the marine environment.
SIMA also acknowledged the continued support of the provincial government and thanked all stakeholders for their participation and commitment to strengthening maritime safety in Choiseul province.

There was something different in the air this week over the Pacific.
As Solomon Airlines flight IE711 descended toward Port Vila and IE723 made its approach into Honiara, the cockpit told a story that went beyond aviation. For the first time in the airline’s history, two female Airbus A320 pilots operated international services together — Captain Claudia Walding and First Officer Lyndah Tito Owen — and the flight marked the beginning of a new chapter for Solomon Airlines and for the women who now have a clearer path into the industry.
For passengers boarding those flights, it may have looked like any other international sector. But for those following the trajectory of Pacific aviation, the sight of two local women commanding the flight deck of a jet aircraft on an international route was a marker of just how far the industry has travelled — and how much further it still hopes to go.
Owen has spent seventeen years turning what might once have seemed unlikely into her everyday reality.
She joined Solomon Airlines in 2009, starting out on the smaller aircraft that connect the islands she calls home. She has steadily broken new ground since. In 2017, alongside Captain Patricia Avosa, she became part of the airline’s first all-local female flight crew, flying together aboard a De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter — the rugged, propeller-driven workhorse of inter-island travel across the Solomons. By 2023, she had risen to become the airline’s first female Dash 8 Captain, stepping up to a larger aircraft and greater responsibility.
Now she stands at the threshold of another milestone: the first local female pilot to commence Airbus A320 line training, the step that carries her from domestic and regional flying into the airline’s international jet operations.
Behind her stands the woman who cleared much of the path already.
Captain Claudia Walding joined Solomon Airlines in 2000 and made history of her own in 2015, becoming the airline’s first female Airbus A320 Captain. Her presence in the cockpit beside Owen this week carried its own weight — years of experience now guiding the next pilot through a milestone Walding once reached alone, with few women in the region’s cockpits to look to for guidance.
Solomon Airlines Chief Executive Officer Matthew Findley called it “another proud milestone for Solomon Airlines and the Solomon Islands”.
“Captain Claudia Walding paved the way for women in aviation within our airline, and we are delighted to see First Officer Lyndah Tito Owen become the first local female pilot to commence Airbus A320 line training.
“Her achievement reflects dedication, professionalism and perseverance, and we hope it inspires more young Solomon Islanders — particularly young women — to pursue careers in aviation,” Findley said.
The milestone comes as Solomon Airlines continues connecting the Solomon Islands with destinations across the Pacific, with the airline saying it remains committed to building a diverse, highly skilled aviation workforce for the future.
For Owen, the significance goes beyond her own logbook.
“I am incredibly proud to take this next step in my career and grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout my journey.
“Flying alongside Captain Claudia Walding makes this milestone even more special, and I hope it inspires more young Solomon Islanders to believe that a career in aviation is within reach,” she said.
The Airbus A320 line training marks only the beginning of this next phase for Owen, as she moves into international jet operations and, in time, routes that will carry the Solomon Islands’ name further across the region.
Somewhere in the islands, perhaps, a young girl is looking up at a Solomon Airlines aircraft crossing the sky, wondering if she might one day sit at the controls herself. If Owen’s career so far is any indication, the answer is already taking shape.

The Ulukolu Community Transport Association (UCTA) in North Guadalcanal has welcomed and commissioned a new three-tonne truck.
A statement from the community yesterday said the vehicle will serve its communities at Sali in North Guadalcanal to provide transport services to Sali and its catchment areas.
This is the third vehicle and second three tonne truck the UCTA has achieved during its five-year operation with the first two vehicles being a three-tonne truck and tractor.

Miss Pepehu also said that the women recognise the important role the Ulukolu transport service plays and it has eased the many challenges women have encountered in the past.
She expressed that the Ulukolu transport service saves time and effort and creates job opportunities for their communities and they are indeed grateful for this transport.
“We sincerely appreciate the trust placed in our association to manage this transport for the benefit of all.
“The positive impact of the Ulukolu transport service extends beyond mere convenience; it fosters a sense of unity and empowerment among women in our communities.
“By facilitating access to essential services and markets, it enables us to take charge of our livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the economic landscape,” said Miss Pepehu.

Solomon Islands has strengthened its partnership with Japan following the signing of a Development Policy Loan with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to support fiscal stability and economic resilience.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon. Rick Houenipwela signed in Tokyo, describing the agreement as a key step in advancing the Government’s reform agenda.
“This initiative supports our commitment to strengthening governance, advancing sound fiscal reforms and building a more resilient and inclusive economy,” he said.
The Foreign Minister said the partnership aligns with the Government’s four key priorities: strong institutions, a productive economy, stewardship of natural wealth and investment in people.
JICA President Akihiko Tanaka reaffirmed Japan’s support for these priorities, noting they reflect “a clear and forward-looking vision” for Solomon Islands.
“We believe this project will strengthen the institutional and fiscal foundations needed to advance these priorities and support sustainable development,” he said.
He highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two countries, with JICA supporting Solomon Islands for nearly 50 years across infrastructure, natural resource management and public investment systems.

One of the East Malaita community elders, John Riu, said it will help improve potholes on the road that they have always struggled to navigate during the rainy season.
“Honestly, it will really help to address the road problems that we always face when transporting our market produce during the rainy season,” he said.
The road sections include 12 km of Double Bituminous Surface Treatment (DBST) sealing from Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction to Kwaisuliniu, which will be done by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), and 21 km from Baratolo to Atori by the local contractor, Trades Transformation Company (TTC).
A statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) yesterday said through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) with funding support from the World Bank, it has mobilized a joint team to Malaita Province.
The aim of this joint team’s trip to Malaita province as stated, is to introduce contractors and conduct awareness ahead of major road sealing and gravel work.
The consultation as mentioned also aims to ensure project safety, minimize disruptions, and gauge local feedback and support.
The recent successful handovers of the Kolofe 1 & 2 bridges, Su’u Harbour, Bira, Koa, and Bi’o bridges were part of the milestone achievement under 2017-2036 National Transport Plan (NTP).

A consultation and information awareness program for communities along two road section improvements and sealing is underway in West Kwara’ae and East Malaita.
The consultant awareness was conducted by a combined team from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with funding support from the World Bank.
A statement from MID yesterday said the consultation is significant to share information about upcoming works, implementation timelines, environmental and social safeguards, traffic management arrangements, and opportunities for casual jobs during the construction phase.
It said that the team has completed the consultation awareness in communities in West Kwara’ae and will move to the East Malaita communities very soon.
Acting Permanent Secretary for MID Mike Qaqara said the awareness is a vital step to ensure project safety, minimize disruptions, and gauge local feedback and support during the road work.
“Engaging directly with our rural communities before heavy machinery rolls onto the site is part of the initial stages for major projects like this one, which also contributes to its success in the months to come,” he said.

Ringi Residents Appeal To Resolve Network Issue

Residents of Ringi in Kolombangara, Western Province are pleading with telecommunication provider Our Telekom to urgently investigate and resolve ongoing mobile network issues that have disrupted communication services for more than a month.
Community members claimed the mobile signal has been unstable, with frequent interruptions affecting both voice calls and 4G mobile internet services.
The persistent connectivity problems have made it difficult for residents to communicate and carry out daily online activities.
The unreliable network has also impacted businesses, schools and government offices that depend on stable internet access.
Users have reported repeated disruptions while conducting online work, participating in Zoom meetings, accessing digital services and making important telephone calls.
Another concerned resident told the Solomon Star that the prolonged network instability has caused significant inconvenience for people who rely on mobile data and voice services for work, education and communication.
Residents explained that the network had been operating well after the area was upgraded to 4G services.
However, they claimed the connectivity problems began after a new Huawei communication tower was erected nearby.
Some residents believe the close proximity of the two communication towers may be contributing to signal interference, although they acknowledged that only a technical assessment by qualified engineers can determine the actual cause.
The community is now appealing to Our Telekom to send technical officers to Ringi to inspect the network infrastructure, identify the source of the problem and restore reliable mobile and internet services as soon as possible.
Residents stressed that dependable telecommunications services are essential for supporting businesses, education, government services and keeping families connected throughout the community.

Pelican 3 Arrives
Pelican Shipping Management has announced the arrival of its third fast-craft joining its current fleet of vessels on Thursday.
Following the arrival of the fast-craft, Pelican Shipping Management said, “Stay tuned—something exciting is coming! Pelican 3 has just arrived in Honiara!”
On Tuesday 7th July, Pelican Shipping Management announced the launch of the vessel.
“This is another step forward in our commitment to strengthening sea transport services for the people of the Solomon Islands.
“From her bold exterior, to her comfortable interior, to her journey across our beautiful waters, Pelican 3 represents progress, connection and service to the communities we are proud to serve,” the statement said.
Two weeks later, the fast-craft finally arrived in Honiara which will help to boost domestic maritime transport.
The catamaran was designed to provide faster, safer, and more comfortable sea travel between the islands.
Pelican Shipping Ltd will announce when the fast-craft will make its maiden trip to the province.
The arrival of the fast-craft has been welcomed by members of the public especially those in Malaita, Makira and Western Provinces.
