Patients who have previously been diagnosed with brain tumours or hydrocephalus should contact the NRH Referral Clinic to confirm or arrange appointments before arriving. Some patients on the existing referral list cannot be contacted because their details are missing or outdated. Patients, relatives, caregivers and family members are asked to share this notice and contact the clinic as soon as possible. In this edition we share with you some implementation updates in the past two months, progress and some impact stories from Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) supported by the project and also a chance to hear from some of our local farmers. We are happy to note that SIART has made significant impacts in terms of boosting agricultural production and build resilient rural livelihoods across Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira/Ulawa Provinces. In terms of infrastructure development, the SIART Project is supporting the construction of the two new modern agriculture office buildings in Auki, Malaita Province and Kirakira, Makira/Ulawa Province, Renovation of MAL’s Research Headquarter, slaughter facility and piggery shelter at King George east of Honiara and the detailed design of the MAL Research Centre for Excellence at Tenaru. The Project has also supported the establishment of a total of 96 Agribusiness Producer Organisations (ABPOs), 45 in Malaita Province, 32 in Guadalcanal Province, 19 in Makira/Ulawa Province, representing more than SBD35 million investment in grant support. SIART has recruited and trained more than 40 young professionals as junior extension officers. These graduates support local farmers, strengthen provincial offices, and build sustainable agribusiness skills. We are on track to achieve our development objectives before the closing of the project. William Okekini SIART Project Manager 3SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Links: $38$38 million,million, 9696 farmer groups,farmer groups, 14,66514,665 beneficiaries,beneficiaries, 33 ProvincesProvinces More than 14,000 local farmers benefitting from SIART’s support Atotal of 14, 665 local farmers across Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira/Ulawa Provinces are now benefitting from support from the SIART Project through their respective Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs). The SIART Project have funding agreements with a total of 96 ABPOs in the three provinces which represents a SBD38.08 million. Funding to the ABPOs focuses on supporting community farmer groupings and family farms in key value chains like cocoa, coconut, piggery, poultry, including food crops, spice, coffee and honey. There are 32 ABPOs in Guadalcanal Province with 5,165 beneficiaries, 45 in Malaita Province where 6,166 local ABPO farmers are benefiting and 19 ABPOs in Makira/Ulawa Province benefitting 3,334 local farmers. The objective behind the ABPO grants is to increase the production capacity and income of smallholder farmers in the targeted areas. SIART Project Manager, Mr. William Okekini highlighted that aside from the funding support, the Project has also committed to help the local farmers improve the quality of, and access to, extension services in crop production, small livestock production, and animal health services. “It is encouraging to see the positive impacts the project is having on the targeted vulnerable communities for agriculture production and the rest of the project areas. “We are increasing the income for smallholder and semicommercial farmers engaged in high- value crops and small livestock production while contributing to our objective of enhanced agricultural production, import substitution, and increased export,” Mr. Okekini said. Out of the 96 ABPOs, 45 focuses on cocoa, 20 in piggery, 14 in coconut, 9 in food crops, 4 in poultry, 2 in spice and one each for coffee and honey covering a total of 30 constituencies on the three provinces. The SIART Project is supporting 9 Agribusiness Producer Organizations in cocoa in the province representing a $3.1 million investment. 4SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Artificial insemination to improve pig breed in Solomon Islands With support from the SIART Project, imported pig semen from Australia arrived in the country on Wednesday 16 September 2026 through to be used to upgrade local genetics and overcome widesp read inbreeding affecting pig production in Solomon Islands. This is part of the Pig Breed Improvement Program with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MALD) aimed at improving the reproductive performance, productivity and genetic quality of pigs in Solomon Islands. Following the arrival of the imported semen, gilts were inseminated from Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September 2026, with the first piglets from the artificial insemination (AI) program expected to be born in January 2027. The imported semen includes ninety-six tubes for forty-right gilts (young female pigs) supplied by the Premier Pig Genetics in Queensland, Australia. SIART Project Manager William Okekini said the program is designed to gradually introduce new genetics into the local pig population while working closely with existing pig breeders. “This program is about bringing new genetics into Solomon Islands and making sure the benefits reach local farmers. The farmers are an important part of the program because they are providing the gilts that will become the foundation for producing improved offspring,” he said. Video Links: 5SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Increased coconut production in sight for SIART supported ABPOs The SIART Project has supported 14 ABPOs across the three provinces representing a $5.2 million investment. They include 3 in Guadalcanal Province, 7 in Makira/Ulawa Province and 4 in Malaita Province. To enable the ABPOs to increase production, 771 hectares of coconut plantations have been rehabilitated under the project with 46 driers being either newly constructed or rehabilitated. According to recent data gathered by the SIART Project, the current average production of all 14 ABPOs combined is around 700kg per hectare and 540 tons for the 771 hectares. “After rehabilitation the production of copra should increase to 1.5 tons per hectare,” Project Manager, Mr. Okekini, said. “Production from the rehabilitated 771 hectares is expected to produce around 1.157 tons, an increase of 617 t0ns of dried copra worth $4.32 million per annum at $7 per kg,” he added. A total of 418 households in the three provinces are benefitting from SIART’s support in their respective communities reaching up to 2,340 beneficiaries. Other support includes 11 nurseries of 27,000 seedlings which is equivalent to 219 hectares, 11 storage sheds, construction of 46 hot air driers, equipment, capacity building trainings and a $820,000 working capital to operate their agribusinesses. $18 million investment in Cocoa across three provinces With a total investment of SBD18.04 million in cocoa, the SIART Project has 16 ABPOs in Guadalcanal ($6.6 million), 20 ABPOs in Malaita ($8.2 million) and 9 ABPOs in Makira/Ulawa ($3.1 million) Province. This includes 1,200 households across the three provinces with approximately 6,900 beneficiaries. As part of the support, SIART has helped local farmers who are members of the ABPOs with the rehabilitation of 880 hectares of existing cocoa farms and have supported 31 nurseries and also providing 300,000 seedling which can be equivalent to 350 hectares. In terms of infrastructure, SIART has increased the processing capacity of the ABPOs with the construction of 72 new cocoa driers and has rehabilitated 24 existing driers. Additionally, 34 solar driers were also built. To operate as an agribusiness, a total of SBD2,764,000 working capital, termed as revolving funds, has been disbursed for the ABPOs to purchase wet beans for processing and also dried beans from local farmers in the communities. Links: Links: 6SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Construction of new Agriculture building in Auki makes good progress The construction of the new modern agriculture office building in Auki, Malaita Province has passed mid-way of the construction phase. All the preparatory work including the foundation footing up to first floor column and beam have been completed, according to Engineers from the Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project. The construction of the SBD17.9 million double-story agriculture office building is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in partnership with the World Bank through the SIART Project. SIART Project Engineer, Mr. Godfrey Hou highlighted that the construction phase has a time-frame of 12 months. “From the progress so far, there are two milestones already achieved by the Contractor. They have completed the foundation footing up to the first- floor slab and the second milestone is from the slab to the beam for roofing on the second floor,” he added. Mr. Hou said the Contractor is on track to achieve the next milestone which is roofing. “As soon as they complete the beam for roofing, work on assembling and installation of roof frames will commence,” he said. As of 31 August 2026, workers started preparation for roofing which included the casing for columns and beams as well as finishing off block work on the external wall of the first floor to be followed by the installation of roof frames and roof covering. The construction of the new modern agriculture office building in Auki, Malaita Province has passed mid-way of the construction phase. Links: Video 7SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 While constructionat the new Agriculture office building in Auki, Malaita Province is progressing well, SIART also acknowledges the Contractor, JQY Construction, for fully complying to the Contractor’s Environmental and Social Management Plan (CESMP) which is mandatory for World Bank funded projects that details how a contractor will manage environmental, social, health, and safety (ESHS) risks during project execution. SIART’s Environmental Safeguards Officer, Mr. Steve Sae was on site on Thursday 27 August 2026 to conduct an environmental, health, social and safety audit to ensure compliance. “From the SIART Project we are happy that the Contractor has implemented what is required of them and that they are fully compliance with their CESMP,” he said. SIART acknowledges Contractor for complying with CESMP on site Three Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Guadalcanal Province on Friday 21 August 2026 hosted World Bank Resident Representative for Solomon Islands, Bernard Harborne, on a visit to their communities, where he engaged with local farmers and hear about the progress of their funded projects and the positive impacts on rural life. They include the Taubebe Cocoa Farmers Association in Tasiboko, north east Guadalcanal, Momolu Cocoa Farmers Association in north Guadalcanal and the Gold Ridge Women Farmers’ Poultry project. SIART has signed agreements with a total of 96 ABPOs, 32 in Guadalcanal Province, 45 in Malaita Province, and 19 in Makira/Ulawa Province. Mr. Harborne was accompanied by SIART Project Manager, Mr. William Okekini, Project Adviser Mark Johnston, Linda Manele from the World Bank Honiara country, other SIART staff as well as Young Professionals serving in World Bank Resident Representative Visits ABPOs, Commends Progress on Farming Projects the respective parts of Guadalcanal Province. During discussions with local farmers, Mr. Solomon Tobana, Chairman of the Taubebe Cocoa Association welcomed the visit and expressed appreciation for the World Bank’s sustained support through the SIART Project that will boost agricultural production for organized groups of local farmers who are members of the ABPOs. Links: Links: 8SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Alexander Dite’e is a high school teacher at Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School in Malaita Province. He lives with his family in the provincial capital, Auki. Before pursuing a degree in Fiji, he had a keen interest in agricultural activities and has experience in poultry farming. “The livelihoods of our people in the village depends heavily on agriculture to support our families,” he said. With this in mind, upon his return, Mr. Dite’e formed the ADA Alliance and Farmers Association, one of 45 Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Malaita Province, supported by the Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project. The ADA Alliance and Farmers Association is made up of an extended family of 20 household farmers, including women and children, in Analolo Village, in the mountains of Central Kwara’ae. Through the Association, Mr. Dite’e as Chairman and members will receive 1,000 day-old-chicks from the SIART Project. The Project has also supported them with a poultry house, equipment, starter feed, and a revolving fund to manage their agribusiness. “Thank you to the SIART Project for this opportunity and for assisting our struggling farmers in the rural communities,” Mr. Dite’e, said. “This support has put us in a position where we have the opportunity to start our village poultry farm and an organized Dite’e’s PoultryDite’e’s Poultry Dream Takes FlightDream Takes Flight In Analolo Village, SIART is building better rural livelihoods through Poultry Farming Chairman of the ADA Alliance and Farmers Association, Alex Dite’e inftont of their poultry house at Analolo village which is supported by the SIART Project. The first bunch of 500 day-old- chicks arrived in Analolo village in late August 2026 with a second bunch expected to be delivered soon. After 6 weeks of feeding, the farmers at Analolo village will go to the market at $120 per bird and can easily earn up to SBD$100,000 for their 1,000 birds provided by the SIART Project. Relishing the benefits and mitigating the challenges The farmers at Analolo village are grateful to the SIART Project for putting them in a position to start somewhere. “The funding support SIART in itself is already a benefit for us,” Chairman, Mr. Dite’e, said. “It provided us the opportunity to have 1,000 birds and feed without spending any money. For us, this is a big help which we really value. That is why we will ensure that the implementation of this project is done properly to ensure that everyone, all our farmers benefit,” he added. Apart from the financial aspect, the farmers are also recipient of capacity building trainings delivered by the SIART Project. Like any other project been implemented, there will always be challenges. For the ADA Alliance and Farmers Association, their geographical location is a major challenge. To get to Analolo village, you go by truck from the provincial capital Auki and then walk a distance from the main road crossing at the head of the Fiu River on the way. “To ensure we successfully implement our project, we have to work together to mitigate the challenges,” Mr. Dite’e, said. “Farmers must have a sense of ownership of this project, so that everyone works. We are not expecting immediate benefits, but overtime we will reap the rewards of our hard work,” he added. Since their association is made of all closely related family members, Mr. Dite’e said solving issues and concerns amongst members is easy with everyone committed to mitigating any challenges faced. “Farmers must have a sense of ownership of this project, so that everyone works. Links: 10SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Women from Gheghede village in east central Guadalcanal are very happy to see the SIART supported pineapple project in their village and are very supportive of their farmers’ association. “It will benefit us a lot,” said Heslyn Tarimana, a member of the Atunoda Family Farmers Association and local pineapple farmer in Gheghede village. “This project will help us overcome the challenges we always face when taking our pineapples to Honiara,” she added. Project to ease challenges faced by women in Gheghede With support from the SIART Project, Gheghede village now has a pineapple processing shed, processing machine and a formal agribusiness set up to help farmers. Farmers now avoid the challenges of travelling to Honiara’s Central Market. Instead, they sell their pineapples to their association in the village and produce pineapple juice. Heslyn reiterated the difficulties and expense of transportation. “Most times we sleep at the Central Market in Honiara when we still have pineapples to sell or when finding transport back to the village is difficult,” Heslyn said. “Now that this project has come to us, we plant here in the village, harvest and at the same time sell our pineapples in the village,” Heslyn said. Heslyn acknowledges the partnership between MAL and the World Bank through the SIART Project for choosing the pineapple farmers of Gheghede village as one of the recipients of funding support. “It is our long-time cry for such a project to reach our village, that help us with economic activities in the village. “To support us in terms of education and meeting small needs for the household. Now that we can earn money in the village, it will also enable us to save money other family and community commitments,” she said. With their recently completed shed and pineapple processing machine and now equipped with relevant training, the pineapple farmers in Gheghede village have a bright future in sight. Video Links: 11SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 For a group of village farmers in the highlands of East Central Guadalcanal, their remoteness coupled with bad road conditions means accessing Honiara’s main markets with their produces is always a challenge. And when they do reach the capital, farmers, including women and children, are often faced with the harsh reality of sleeping overnight at the Central Market in Honiara. For a night or sometimes more to sell their produces before returning home. It is because of these challenges that they decided to work together as a group and form the Atunoda Family Farmers Association to seek support with the aim of improving livelihoods in the community through their pineapple farms. They are now beneficiaries of funding support from the Solomon Islands Agricultural Rural Transformation (SIART) Project. With support from the SIART Project, local farmers under the Atunoda Family Farmers Association have recently completed their Pineapple Processing shed worth SBD196,106 in Gheghede village. The Project also funded a pineapple processing machine for the Association worth SBD24,500. The Association is made up of thirty (30) smallholder farmers in Gheghede village, situated in Aola Ward in East Central Guadalcanal. First bottles of pineapple juice The Atunoda Family Farmers Association celebrated the historic production of their first bottles on pineapple juice in June 2026. This was during a SIART organized Pineapple Processing and Food Safety Training facilitated by a Food Technician from the Research Department at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL). “The first production from our processing facility is a greenlight for us. Assurance that we can earn a profit from producing pineapple juice in our village,” he said. From 20 fruits of pineapples used as samples during the training, they were able to produce more than 60 bottles in less than an hour. “In Honiara, we get around $200 for 20 pineapple fruits. But then we have to pay for transport and market fees,” Gideon said. “We can earn more if we sell $5 per bottle of pineapple juice in the surrounding communities and nearby schools. And we are also looking for clients with shops in Honiara,” he added. How Pineapple Juice is Changing Village Life Gheghede village is known for producing large number of pineapples. And they are one of the main suppliers of sweet pineapples for Honiara. The Atunoda Family Farmers Association acknowledges the partnership between MAL and the World Bank through the SIART Project for choosing the pineapple farmers of Gheghede village as one of the recipients of funding support. Links: 12SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 SIART supports Women’s Poultry to increase production The Gold Ridge Women Farmers’ Poultry Project has acknowledged the SIART Project for supporting local farmers in our rural communities especially women. Chairlady, Mrs. Joyce Pohungke said with support from the SIART Project, they have been able to improve their poultry housing and increase the number of broiler birds per building to 500 birds at one time. On Thursday 27 August 2026, the first group of women from the Gold Ridge Women Farmers Poultry received 300 broiler birds through the continuous support from the SIART Project. “In six weeks, the women are expected to sell their birds at $150 to $200 per bird to our neighbouring communities and at the Gold Ridge Mining Company,” Chairlady, Mrs. Pohungke, said. Apart from increased broiler production and sales, the SIART Project is also supporting the women’s poultry project improve capacity building of ABPO members through climate resilience poultry trainings and improve existing poultry units to accommodate maximum number of birds using standard spacing and to allow adequate air ventilation for healthy birds. As part of the support, SIART has also provided them with office equipment, stationaries for proper administration work. SIART continues to deliver capacity building trainings to boost rural farmers The SIART Project continues to deliver vital capacity building trainings that will be beneficial for local farmers in the provinces. From Wednesday 26 to 28 August 2026, a team from SIART was in Auki, Malaita Province to conduct a three-day training workshop on Financial Literacy and Feed Formulation for SIART’s Young Professionals (YPs) working as junior agriculture extension officers in the province and the Provincial Project Team (PPT) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL). From these trainings, the YPs and the PPT will be enable to transfer the skills and knowledge gained to local farmers who are members of the Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Malaita Province. Malaita Province has 45 signed Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) supported by the SIART Project. SIART’s Agribusiness Officer for Malaita Province, Ms. Betty Arumae highlighted that the Financial Literacy Training will equip ABPOs with essential business management skills. “This will provide practical financial literacy and management training to help local farmers and rural groups run profitable agribusinesses,” she said. Links: 13SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 Training for piggery ABPOs in South Malaita The SIART Project in October 2026 completed a series of two-day trainings for piggery Agribusiness Produce Organizations (ABPOs) in the southern region of Malaita Province. Beneficiaries of the trainings are local pig farmers from the Waiasi Piggery Farmers Association, Mamanaha Indigenous Piggery Farmers Association, Apatarau Tribe, Kauhata Piggery Project and the Ikoru Raku Farmers Association. This is part of SIART’s support to its ABPOs, providing funding, capacity building trainings, and technical assistance to boost rural livelihoods and agricultural productivity. SIART’s Agribusiness Officer for Malaita Province, Ms. Betty Arumae highlighted that the two-day training series covered key areas for piggery farmers which included Pig Husbandry, Animal Health, Quality, Marketing, Promotion and the types of farming system. Fr Steven Unu’iwao, from the Waiasi Piggery Farmers Association in Waipina Village in South Malaita, was one of the local farmers who attended the training who described it as good and fitting for rural farmers. “This is the first time for us to hear and learn from such information delivered during the training and also the practical demonstrations. It was very important information and knowledge about piggery farming and managing an agribusiness which we as a community group are venturing into. We are really happy with the training and thank the SIART Project for recognizing this need for us local farmers,” Fr. Unu’iwao said. Links: 14SIART Newsletter I September - October 2026 I EDITION 003 The SIART Project has invested a total of $8.7 million into twenty (20) Agribusiness Producer Organization (ABPOs), 16 in Malaita Province, 3 in Guadalcanal Province and 1 in Makira/Ulawa Province which is improving the livelihoods of 532 households and benefitting around 3,000 individuals in different communities across the three provinces. These are ABPOs involved in community pig farming projects. SIART supported the establishment of pig breeding facilities including pig house, breeding stock, feed and equipment and distributed weaner to local farmers who are members of the respective ABPOs. SIART Project Manager, Mr. William Okekini said the project has also supported with pig grower sheds for either individual farmers or for the ABPOs as a group. “The potential impacts of this investment will be huge which also has the potential of changing the lives of local pig farmers in the communities. Boosting Community Pig Farming ProjectsBoosting Community Pig Farming Projects “We are estimating 2,400 weaners produced per annum from the 100 breeder sows supplied which is valued at $1.92 million. That is if they sell at $800 per weaner. “The project has also supplied 189 weaners to farmers for growing with the potential value of $567,000 when sold at $3,000 per head or approximately 15,000 kg of pork meat,” Mr. Okekini said. With the piggery ABPOs, SIART ensures that they comply with set environmental safeguards standards with proper housing and waste disposal, management and take into consideration the animals’ welfare. A total of $902,000 has been disbursed to the 20 piggery ABPOs to purchase weaners and feed and to operate and manage their ABPOs. AgriConnect is a World Bank Group initiative to help smallholder farmers move from subsistence to surplus. It is a platform that brings together farmers, business, government, and development partners to unlock opportunities across the agricultural value chain and transform agriculture to create more jobs, raise income levels for 300 million farmers, and improve global food security. World Bank’s Senior Agriculture Specialist, Mr. Abimbola Adubi made a presentation on AgriConnect in Honiara on Friday 17 July 2025 at the Heritage Park Hotel. Mr. Adubi was in Honiara leading a World Bank team for the seventh implementation support mission for the SIART Project from 13 – 17 July, 2026. With the achievements of the SIART and its sustainability in mind after the project ends, the World Bank is proposing the introduction of AgriConnect “In terms of sustainability and next steps, this is where the element of AgriConnect becomes very important,” Mr. Adubi. This will enhance productivity and ensure that the small and medium scale agribusinesses are functioning and are creating employment. To date the SIART Project has established and supports the operations of 96 Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs), 45 in Malaita Province, 32 in Guadalcanal Province and 19 in Makira/Ulawa Province. With this, there’s the opportunity to bring in the private sector based on the achievements of the SIART Project and explore how AgriConnect can come into play in Solomon Islands. “We won’t allow the good work done by SIART to stop when the project ends. We want to find a way of resonating it and bring in private sector attention in line with the AgriConnect program,” Mr. Adubi said. The World Bank plans to workshop the AgriConnect initiative with key stakeholders, private sector, Government and all value chain actors in Solomon Islands in the not-too-distant future. This will create a platform of awareness to explore opportunities for the private sector to invest in the agriculture sector and play a vital role through the AgriConnect initiative in such a way that supports the creation of jobs and enhance productivity in Solomon Islands and ensure that the value chains are active. Acupuncture Helps Two Patients Recover at NRH

Wheelchairs Left Behind, Smiles Regained, Two patients achieve recovery with Chinese acupuncture. Recently, two patients in Solomon Islands have experienced remarkable recoveries following acupuncture treatment provided by the China medical team. One can now walk without a wheelchair, while another has regained her ability to smile. Since arriving in March 2026, the team's acupuncture service has supported more than 2,600 local patients. The first patient, a woman in her 30s, struggled with recurring swelling and severe pain affecting both knees over three months. She made her living doing heavy manual physical work. At first, rest and over-the-counter pain medication could offer temporary relief, yet her condition kept deteriorating. When she first presented at the Acupuncture Clinic at the Comprehensive Medical Center (CMC) in National Referral Hospital (NRH), her knees were markedly swollen. Joint bending was severely limited, and she could not bear weight on her legs at all. Family members had to push her into the consultation room in a wheelchair. Following comprehensive clinical evaluation, Chinese acupuncturist Dr. Hou Xunrui diagnosed her with knee synovitis with joint effusion. To ease pressure building inside the joints, he first drained accumulated fluid from her knees. Treatment combined standard acupuncture and warm-needle moxibustion alongside pain-relieving medication. As swelling and pain eased, the doctor guided her through gradual exercises to rebuild knee flexibility and restore weight-bearing function in her lower limbs. Healing took time. The patient progressed slowly: unable to stand at first, then taking short steps supported by her family, until she could walk independently. Trusting the clinical plan, she completed two full courses of therapy. When she returned for follow-up, she walked into the clinic unassisted, no wheelchair required. A follow-up text check-in from Dr. Hou captured her progress. "I am not using wheelchair now, I feel better than before," the patient wrote. The second patient, another woman in her 30s, arrived at the Acupuncture Clinic under very different circumstances. One month prior to her consultation, she had developed right-sided peripheral facial paralysis. The condition erased wrinkles on the right side of her forehead, left her unable to fully close her right eye, and pulled her mouth off-centre toward her left. Basic daily actions including eating, speaking and making facial expressions became difficult. She had sought other medical support with little improvement. By the time she met Dr. Hou, the optimal timeframe for early-stage steroid intervention for facial palsy had already passed. Dr. Hou created an individualised treatment roadmap focused on gradual facial-nerve rehabilitation. Drawing on multiple traditional medicine techniques, he administered regular acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, acupoint injection, ginger-separated moxibustion and kinesiology taping, paired with nerve-supporting medication. The therapy plan was adjusted at each visit based on changes in her facial muscle performance. After two months of consistent care, most of her facial mobility and symmetry returned. She could raise her eyebrows, fully shut her eyes and smile normally again. She thanked the clinical team and shared that movement was coming back to her facial muscles. "I am very happy with Dr. Hou's treatment and care for my paralysis. His team are very helpful." She shared that for long time she had relied only on painkillers, which never addressed the root of her suffering. "I came to try acupuncture after hearing about it from a friend. The results exceeded my expectations. I hold the China Medical Team in high regard, and I will tell other community members they can turn to this service when they are unwell." "For these two women, recovery represented far more than clinical improvement: it meant reclaiming ordinary daily life that illness had taken away," the team leader of the China Medical Team Dr. Chu Liangzhao noted. Word-of-mouth among recovered people continues to build local awareness of traditional Chinese medicine as a practical treatment option within the local health landscape. Patient numbers for acupuncture have been steadily growing, with more than 20 patients attending the clinic each day. These two independent recovery journeys stand as tangible real-life examples of the broad-ranging work completed by the 5th China Medical Team through its more than 2,600 acupuncture consultations for local people.

RSIPF Arrests Suspected “96 Gang” Member at Marble Street The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has responded to public concerns by arresting a suspected member of the alleged “96 Gang” at Marble Street, Vara Creek, over the weekend. Community elders in the Marble Street area are working closely with police to identify other youths suspected of being involved in the group. The arrested suspect is reportedly being held at the Central Police Watch House and has been charged with unlawful assembly and common assault in relation to an alleged assault on a student at Tuvaruhu, as well as one count of malicious damage for allegedly stoning and damaging windows at Tuvaruhu High School. Honiara City Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Superintendent Leslie Kili, said the suspect could be remanded at Rove Prison as investigations continue to identify and locate other suspects allegedly involved in the incidents. Before this arrest, police apprehended five boys under the age of 17 in the Chinatown Rainbow Shop area on friday, 23 October 2026, for their alleged involvement in unlawful behaviour. The boys were reportedly linked to incidents involving theft and threats against members of the public in the Chinatown area. Although these boys are believed to be associated with a different group, police continue to address reports of unlawful activities and behaviour affecting communities in Honiara. PPC Kili said police had already issued warnings through social media, reminding youths that engaging in unlawful activities could have serious consequences. He also urged parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children's behaviour by providing proper guidance and discipline at home before police intervention becomes necessary. The handover ceremony was attended by Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) executives, National Referral Hospital staff, and workers from Lee Kwok Kuen Construction. Speaking on behalf of the Lee Kwok Kuen Family, Mrs. Sophia Lee acknowledged and thanked the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the National Referral Hospital for their close collaboration with Lee Kwok Kuen Construction and its workers throughout the construction of the facility. Mrs. Lee said the Lee Kwok Kuen Family is humbled and proud to give back to the people of Solomon Islands and believes it is fitting that the facility will serve patients undergoing treatment for tuberculosis, as well as the healthcare workers dedicated to providing care and services within the facility. She also expressed her gratitude to the Government, through the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the National Referral Hospital, and to the people of Solomon Islands for their continued support of the company over the years. Receiving the new facility on behalf of the Government and the people of Solomon Islands, Minister for Health and Medical Services Hon. Morris Toiraena thanked the Lee Kwok Kuen Family and its staff for what he described as a life-saving gift that will strengthen care for people affected by tuberculosis. “Today marks an important milestone for the National Referral Hospital and the Ministry as we address the continuing public health burden of tuberculosis across our country. I express my deep gratitude to the Lee Kwok Kuen Family and its association for this generous donation. Your family has been a valued partner of the hospital and the Ministry. You supported the renovation of the Special Care Nursery and the Green Ward, and now you have made this TB Isolation Wing possible.” The Minister said the handover demonstrated the strength of partnerships between government, families, businesses and communities. Hon. Toiraena highlighted that the facility supports the Government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that every person can access essential health services without suffering financial hardship. “These services include health promotion, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. Universal Health Coverage also requires fair financing, strong leadership and good governance. Most importantly, it requires health equity so that every person, wherever they live and whatever their circumstances, can benefit from quality care.” The Minister noted that tuberculosis remains a major public health concern globally and within Solomon Islands. He explained that managing active TB cases in busy emergency and outpatient departments presents serious risks and practical challenges, particularly when appropriate isolation facilities are limited. He revealed that TB trends at the National Referral Hospital highlight the growing demand for dedicated services. “In 2016, the hospital admitted 102 TB patients. By 2024, that number had risen to 245, and in 2025 it reached 255, more than double the number recorded a decade earlier. Despite high bed occupancy and hospital stays averaging up to 45 days, treatment outcomes remain strong. Most encouragingly, hospital deaths have fallen to just one per year in each of the past two years. These results clearly show why a dedicated facility for public awareness, screening, diagnosis and treatment is so important.” He said the new facility will provide an opportunity to enhance treatment services, patient education and rehabilitation, while supporting patients as they safely return to their families and communities. The facility will also contribute directly to the National TB Control and Prevention Policy by providing a dedicated space for national training, research and workforce development. The Minister further noted that while Solomon Islands’ national TB programme has consistently achieved treatment success rates of between 92 and 96 per cent, the latest epidemiological data remains concerning. “TB incidence increased from 60 per 100,000 people in 2021 to 123 per 100,000 in 2025, while treatment coverage fell to 45 per cent. This means that more than half of estimated TB cases may remain undiagnosed or untreated.” He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring TB screening, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation services remain accessible to all who need them. “This facility will serve as a national centre for TB prevention and control, with greater scope for research and continuous improvement. As highlighted at the launch of the National TB Strategy, this facility will help deliver better outcomes for patients, their families and the wider community.” Ends///

Biosecurity Solomon Islands Conducts SPS Training Workshop

Biosecurity Solomon Islands Conducts SPS Training Workshop Biosecurity Solomon Islands is currently conducting its Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Training Workshop at the Heritage Park Hotel. Solomon Islands has secured market access for a range of agricultural and other products. However, securing market access does not automatically translate into successful exports. Maintaining compliance with importing countries’ SPS requirements is essential to ensuring that Solomon Islands products can enter and compete in international markets. The workshop provides an important opportunity to strengthen the capacity of Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MALD) staff and other government stakeholders by broadening their understanding of SPS-related matters, sharing knowledge and experiences, and encouraging meaningful, interactive discussions. BSI will conduct the same workshop for its stakeholders from the private sector and Government State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), starting tomorrow. Through this initiative, participants can strengthen their knowledge and coordination to support the effective implementation of SPS measures and help translate market access opportunities into successful and sustainable export outcomes for Solomon Islands.
