Taking on the Challenge: Alpheus Fiuramo's Judo Journey From a schoolboy inspired by martial arts movies to a police officer building his skills through Judo, Alpheus Fiuramo is proving that it is never too late to challenge yourself. Alpheus Fiuramo's interest in martial arts began in 2008, when he was a student at Koloale Community High School. His older brother had joined a Judo club and regularly trained at the Multipurpose Hall. Watching his brother train sparked Alpheus's interest, while martial arts movies added to his fascination with the sport. Growing up, Alpheus also experienced bullying, which motivated him to learn a martial art himself. Years later, he has found an opportunity to pursue that interest through the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Judo Club. Alpheus now serves in the RSIPF Close Personal Protection Department, balancing his policing duties with training in the martial art that first caught his attention as a schoolboy. Through his commitment to training, Alpheus is one of 13 members of the club who have graded up to yellow belt, marking an important step in their Judo journey. "I never back down from a challenge because I believe it builds character. Earning my yellow belt is an achievement for me because it shows my commitment to learning and developing my skills in Judo," Alpheus said. Beyond the achievement, Alpheus sees Judo as an opportunity to develop skills that can support his work as a police officer. Training helps build fitness, coordination and control, which can be useful in policing duties, including the safe detention and apprehension of suspects. He encourages fellow officers to join the club, saying it is a good way to refresh their skills, keep fit and stay motivated outside work. The RSIPF Judo Club was officially established in March 2026 and is helping members develop their skills through regular training and grading. Kevin Shaw, an advisor with the RSIPF and AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP) and a Judo instructor, is a second-degree black belt known as Nidan. He brings years of experience to the club and guides members as they work towards their next level. "Judo is about so much more than just learning techniques. It develops discipline, physical fitness, coordination, and the ability to remain composed under pressure, qualities that are valuable in policing. Seeing 13 members achieve their yellow belts is a great milestone for the club, and I hope their progress inspires more officers to step onto the mat and discover what Judo can offer," Shaw said. Shaw also recognised Alpheus's achievement and the opportunities that may lie ahead. "Alpheus's achievement shows what can be achieved through commitment and training, and who knows where his Judo journey might take him. In the future, he may have the opportunity to represent the RSIPF at international police Judo competitions. It's something our officers can aspire to while continuing to develop their skills, fitness, and discipline," Shaw said. The club now has more than 35 members, including RSIPF officers, Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI) officers and children of police officers, who train twice a week to develop their techniques and work towards further grades. The RSIPF Judo Club acknowledges the valuable support of the Australian Defence Force, Pacific Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation and Oceania Judo Union, whose assistance with crash mats, judo uniforms and training T-shirts has supported the club's training and development. For Alpheus, earning his yellow belt is more than a grading achievement. It represents his commitment to pursuing an interest that began during his school years and his determination to keep challenging himself. Alongside 12 other members who graded up to yellow belt, Alpheus has shown what commitment, discipline and a willingness to learn can achieve. Their success is also an encouragement to other officers to step onto the mat, challenge themselves and discover new skills. From a schoolboy inspired by martial arts to a police officer continuing to learn and grow, Alpheus's journey is a reminder that it is never too late to pursue an interest, take on a new challenge and achieve something you can be proud of.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT MEDIA RELEASE Minister Kumi concludes New Zealand visit to inform education reforms AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 17 October 2026 — Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Hon. Stephen Kumi, has concluded a week-long consultation and study visit to New Zealand to inform Solomon Islands’ education reforms, with a focus on technical and vocational learning, STEM and higher education. The programme, held from 10 to 18 October, included six education and training institutions and consultations with five government and education agencies. It explored how schools, training providers, universities and employers can create clearer pathways into further study and employment. Findings and recommendations will be formally submitted to the MEHRD Senior Management Team, relevant authorities and Cabinet for consideration. In Wellington, Hon. Kumi met New Zealand’s Minister for Tertiary Education, Hon. Penny Simmonds, at the Beehive, and Minister of Education, Hon. Erica Stanford, during the New Zealand Vocational Education and Training Research Forum, strengthening dialogue and bilateral cooperation. Agency consultations involved the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), Ministry of Education, New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and Education New Zealand. Discussions covered curriculum, assessment, literacy, numeracy, STEM, qualifications, quality assurance, careers guidance and transitions into tertiary study and work. The six institutions were the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute at Te Puia; Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology; Auckland University of Technology (AUT), South Campus; Manurewa High School; Western Springs College; and Skills Trades Training at Highbrook. Visits demonstrated vocational and university pathways, school and industry partnerships, and learning connected to culture, communities and careers. Key lessons included connecting academic and technical learning through recognised pathways, enabling progression from practical training to higher qualifications and degrees where entry requirements are met. Strong literacy and numeracy, practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), informed career choices and employer-supported work experience were also central to preparing students for further learning and workforce needs. The consultations highlighted clear institutional responsibilities, credible qualifications, quality assurance, student support and community participation. Recommendations will consider how these approaches can be adapted to Solomon Islands’ resources, geography and provincial needs. The visit supports two major Government reforms: Free Education and the establishment of the Ministry of Higher Education, Skills Development, Research and Innovation (MHESDRI). Lessons will inform efforts to improve access, education quality and sustainable delivery. Groundwork for the new ministry is progressing, with full operation expected during the first quarter of 2027. It will provide a dedicated home for universities operating in Solomon Islands, post- secondary studies, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), research and innovation, strengthening coordination and alignment with national development priorities. Concluding the consultations, Hon. Kumi visited communities in Waikato and Auckland, explained the delegation’s mission and outlined the reform priorities. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to better education opportunities and called on professionals living in New Zealand to share expertise and practices that could support learning pathways, skills training and higher education in Solomon Islands. The Minister thanked the New Zealand Government, through MFAT, for making the visit possible; the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships programme and Skills Group for facilitating it; and host institutions, agencies and communities for their welcome and exchange of knowledge. MAORO Community High School Receives New $1.8 Million Classroom Facility Maoro, 20 August 2026 - A newly completed 8-block double-storey classroom building has been officially handed over to Maoro Community High School in Central Kwaarae, Malaita Province, marking a major investment in modern and more conducive learning spaces for students. The facility, valued at SI$1.8 million, was constructed by Trade Works Contractors Limited and is one of the infrastructure deliverables supported by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. Upon arrival in Auki, the MEHRD delegation received a surprise protocol-level welcome at the wharf by the Provincial Education Office before being escorted to the Premier’s Office for a courtesy visit. The delegation then travelled to Maoro community straight after the courtesy visit, for the official handover of the newly constructed classroom building to the Maoro Community High School. The handover ceremony was attended by provincial leaders, education officials, church representatives, teachers, students, landowners and community members. Opening the speeches was Maoro CHS Principal, acknowledging donors and expressing appreciation for the completion and handover of the new facility, describing it as a significant milestone for the school, its students and the wider Maoro community and encouraged the community to use the facility with care. Australia High Commission rep, Senior Program Manager – Education, Brenda Mauli also acknowledged the partnership MEHRD has with Australia and reiterated Australia’s commitment to support the Solomon Islands Education sector. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Hon. Stephen Kumi, said the new classroom block represents opportunities for hundreds of students and will help prepare future leaders, teachers, nurses, engineers, business people and responsible citizens of Central Kwara’ae, Malaita Province and Solomon Islands. “A school is not measured by the size of its buildings alone, but by the quality of education it provides and the character it develops in its students”, Minister Kumi said. Minister Kumi also linked the classroom investment to the Government’s Free Education Policy, saying the policy reaffirms the Government’s commitment to making education more accessible and affordable for every Solomon Islands child, while recognising the continued shared responsibility of education providers, parents and communities. He paid tribute to the South Sea Evangelical Church as the education provider of Maoro Community High School, acknowledging its long-standing role in shaping students through quality teaching, discipline, Christian values and community partnership. The Minister also honoured the late Honourable Fiulaua, former MP for Central Kwara’ae, whose vision and commitment helped initiate the project through constituency funding. He said the completed facility stands as a lasting legacy of his dedication to education and community development. Minister Kumi encouraged students to value the new facility, take good care of it and make full use of the opportunities it provides, adding that education remains the key that opens doors to a brighter future. The handover event ended day 1 of the 2-day program for the MEHRD and guests visit. Alegegeo was also part of the delegation’s 2 day program.

R E M I N D E R ! 📢📢📢 NATIONAL EXAMINATION DATES AND TIMES 2026 Schools, parents and candidates urged to note the official schedules The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) advises schools, education providers, candidates, parents and guardians that the official dates and times for the 2026 national examinations and the Solomon Islands Standardised Tests of Achievement (SISTA) have been confirmed. The schedules cover SISTA for selected primary schools, the Solomon Islands Junior Secondary Certificate (SIJSC), the Solomon Islands School Certificate Level One (SISCL1), and the Solomon Islands School Certificate Level Two (SISCL2). Key examination periods: • SISTA (selected primary schools only): Thursday, 29 October 2026. • SIJSC: Tuesday, 27 October to Friday, 30 October 2026. • SISCL1: Monday, 26 October to Thursday, 5 November 2026. • SISCL2: Monday, 26 October to Friday, 6 November 2026. Schools are asked to share the timetable widely and ensure candidates are present and prepared before each session.
