SINU Vice-Chancellor calls for Pacific-led ocean governance and community-focused conservation

PRESS RELEASE | 13 August 2026 SINU Vice-Chancellor Calls for Pacific-Led Ocean Governance and Community-Focused Conservation Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau has called for stronger Pacific-led approaches to ocean governance and community-focused conservation. Professor Aqorau delivered the keynote address at the WWF-Pacific Leadership Team Retreat in Honiara, where he highlighted the importance of community ownership, strong institutions and sustainable financing in delivering lasting benefits for Pacific people and the environment. Drawing on his experience with the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA), he highlighted the Vessel Day Scheme as an example of how Pacific countries can work collectively to strengthen resource management and economic benefits. He also presented the proposed Ontong Java Beche-de-Mer Authority as a potential model for community-led conservation and development in Solomon Islands. Professor Aqorau emphasised the important role of universities in strengthening evidence, developing policy solutions and preparing the next generation of Pacific leaders. He called for a future where Pacific communities have greater control over their natural resources and the benefits they generate. During these sessions, students explored his musical journey from childhood, his international performance experiences, and the professional values musicians bring to our community. Western Provincial Govt Backs SINU Expansion Plans for Gizo and Kolombangara

PRESS RELEASE | 12 August 2026 Western Provincial Govt Backs SINU Expansion Plans for Gizo and Kolombangara The Western Provincial Government has reaffirmed its support for the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to expand its presence in Western Province, including the proposed establishment of a new campus in Gizo and the expansion of the Poitete Campus on Kolombangara. The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between a senior Western Provincial Government delegation, led by Deputy Premier Hon. Brian Lotikena, and SINU Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate Services Dr William Parairato and Acting Manager Council Mr Edward Biku. Discussions focused on securing land for the proposed Gizo campus, the transfer of approximately 18 hectares of land at Poitete, Kolombangara, to SINU, and strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through Rural Training Centres across the province. Dr Parairato thanked the Western Provincial Government for its continued support and said the partnership would help SINU expand access to tertiary education, technical training and skills development opportunities for communities in Western Province. The discussions form part of ongoing efforts by SINU and the Western Provincial Government to strengthen their partnership and support the expansion of education and training services across the province. PRESS RELEASE | 11 August 2026 SINU Strengthens Provincial Reach Through CDFL Sub-Coordinators Workshop The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) is strengthening its commitment to making quality higher education more accessible across the country through a four-day workshop for Provincial Sub-Coordinators under the Centre for Distance and Flexible Learning (CDFL). The workshop was officially opened by SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau on Monday at the Friendship Hall in Honiara. Professor Aqorau acknowledged the important role of Provincial Sub-Coordinators in bringing education closer to students in rural and remote communities and supporting SINU’s vision of becoming a truly national university. CDFL Manager Mr. Obed Zutu said the workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of Provincial Sub-Coordinators in student support, administration, reporting, coordination, and the use of digital learning platforms. The workshop also provides an opportunity for participants to share experiences, discuss challenges, and strengthen collaboration with CDFL support teams to improve flexible learning services across the provinces. 📢 SINU News Feature | Tabaka Technical Institute and SINU Set to Sign Partnership Agreement Tabaka Technical Institute (TTI) and the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) are moving towards a proposed five-year strategic partnership aimed at strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Solomon Islands. The partnership will focus on institutional capacity building, staff development, programme and curriculum development, quality assurance, skills training and pathways to higher-level technical qualifications. SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau welcomed the initiative, emphasising that the partnership should go beyond an agreement on paper, with clear implementation plans and measurable outcomes. The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen TTI’s institutional capacity and create greater opportunities for TVET and skills development in the Western Province and Solomon Islands.
