Following the official launch under the theme "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity," the celebration grounds came alive with traditional music, dances, and cultural performances from communities across the province. Participants proudly wore traditional attire decorated with shells, woven ornaments, and leaves, reflecting the unique customs and identities of their respective regions. Visitors were also treated to displays of handcrafted baskets, traditional carvings, woven artefacts, and other cultural items showcasing Guadalcanal's skilled craftsmanship. Traditional food stalls offered local delicacies alongside freshly prepared barbecues, giving visitors an opportunity to experience Guadalcanal's diverse cuisine while bringing communities together through shared meals and cultural exchange. Running from 31 July to 3 August, the celebrations will continue with more cultural performances, exhibitions, youth and women's activities, leadership forums, and entertainment, highlighting the province's traditions, customs, and cultural pride. The Guadalcanal Provincial Government today - Friday 31st July officially launched its 42nd Second Appointed Day Celebrations under the theme, "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity," bringing together communities from across the province for four days of cultural pride, leadership dialogue, and entertainment. The celebrations, running from 31 July to 3 August, are being hosted at SINU Village and the National Stadium in Honiara. The opening day began with colourful float parades from both eastern and western Guadalcanal, with participants representing constituencies, wards, schools, churches, youth groups, and private companies converging at SINU Village. The official opening ceremony featured a devotion led by Rev. Eric Maefonea of the SSEC Church, followed by the raising of the national and provincial flags and the singing of the anthems by students from Lunga Community High School. Chairman of the Second Appointed Day Committee, Mr. Maesac Suia, delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Premier Hon. John Lee Saki addressed participants on behalf of the Guadalcanal Provincial Government. The Guest of Honour, Honiara City Lord Mayor Cr. Eddie Siapu, also delivered keynote remarks, highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation between Guadalcanal communities and the capital city. The ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Ethel Frances, Vice Chairlady of the organising committee. Following the official programme, guests and participants enjoyed refreshments before the commencement of cultural performances and unity exhibitions coordinated by the province's Tourism Department. The discussion will feature prominent speakers including Sir Waeta Ben Tabusasi, Philip Kapini, Dr. Derek Sikua, Dr. Chris Vehe, Dr. Patricia Rodie, Dr. Lincy Pedeverana, and Hon. Dr. Paul Bosawai, who will examine issues such as provincial development, mining, women's leadership, entrepreneurship, and Guadalcanal's aspirations for statehood. GP Second Appointed Day Celebration Starts with Float Parade Day one celebration to mark 42nd Guadalcanal Second Appointed gets off this morning with a float parade. The early morning float parade commenced around 6am and concluded at SINU Village. The Official Opening Ceremony gets underway at 9am featuring speeches from the Deputy Premier and our Guest of Honour, Lord Mayor Cr. Eddie Siapu. Early this morning the participants groups departed from two designated starting points. The Northwest Guadalcanal, West Guadalcanal, and South Guadalcanal Constituencies began their float parade from Mamara, while the Central Guadalcanal, North Guadalcanal, Northeast Guadalcanal, East Central Guadalcanal, and East Guadalcanal Constituencies started from Foxwood. Both float convoys ended up at the SINU Village, for the official opening ceremony. Honiara city came to a stand still as the convey from Mamara passed through the city from White River all the way to Panatina, East Honiara for the official opening. The event will begin with a parade tomorrow and continue throughout the weekend until Monday, when the official program will be held at the National Stadium. A highlight of the celebrations is the provincial feast, where all constituencies within Guadalcanal will provide food for the other eight provinces, as allocated by the organizers. By Jimmy Nolan The Guadalcanal Provincial Government’s Culture and Tourism Division will host a four-day Weaving Festival from Friday, 31 July to Monday, 3 August 2026, at the SINU FOPA Panatina Lower Campus. The event will bring together talented traditional weavers from across the province to showcase their skills and cultural heritage. Speaking to SIBC News, Head of the Culture and Tourism Division, Jacinta Vagha, said the Weaving Festival will coincide with Guadalcanal Province’s Second Appointed Day, which will be celebrated on Monday, 3 August 2026. “The Weaving Festival was first introduced in 2017 as an annual event but had been suspended in recent years. “This year, we are bringing it back, and it will coincide with Guadalcanal Province’s Second Appointed Day celebrations on 3 August. “We have already set up a mini cultural village at the venue, where activities will take place throughout the four-day festival,” she said. Ms Vagha said the festival aims to promote the province’s unique traditional weaving practices while encouraging young people to learn and preserve these skills for future generations. “There will be a weaving competition for both young and experienced weavers, as well as free weaving workshops for children and young people to learn traditional weaving,” she said. “Our main goal is to showcase the skills and talents of Guadalcanal’s local weavers while passing this important cultural knowledge on to the next generation.” Ms Vagha is encouraging people from Guadalcanal and Honiara to visit the cultural village during the four-day festival to experience the province’s traditional weaving and cultural heritage. BY JOSES SAREN Diplomats from New Zealand, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States gathered in Tulagi on Tuesday, July 28 for the official opening of the Nambawan Haus Museum. They reflected on a complex shared history while looking towards future Pacific partnership and peace. Speaking on behalf of Japanese Ambassador Higuchi Keiichi, Consul Katsumasa Maruo described the venue as “more than a museum”. He highlighted its potential as a hub for education, research, and sustainable tourism. Reflecting on the 1942 Battle of Tulagi and Gavutu-Tanambogo, Maruo noted that nearly 1,100 Japanese soldiers and about 120 American soldiers were killed. He suggested that Tulagi’s history as a point of convergence for global powers gave it the character of an “international city”. He framed the museum as a testament to reconciliation and peace. “We all should make efforts to keep peace... and pass over peace to the future generations,” he urged. British High Commissioner HE Paul Turner described the historical layers of the museum site as that of an onion. He added that the building represents a new chapter looking forward. Quoting author Orhan Pamuk, Turner said, “Museums are living spaces where objects become stories, stories become memories, and memories become part of who we are.” He acknowledged that while the UK–Solomon Islands relationship spans over a century, it also includes “the harsh realities of the colonial era”. Turner emphasised that while the restored building preserves memory of the British Protectorate period, the future and story of the museum firmly belongs to the Solomons people and the Gela community. US Chargé d’Affaires Daniel O’Hara framed the opening through a biblical reflection on memory. Quoting Joshua 4:6–7, he described the museum as a memorial to the people. O’Hara noted that the wartime defense of Tulagi’s harbor demonstrated that “some ground is worth defending, that sovereignty is worth protecting.” He emphasised that this principle remains just as vital across the Pacific today as it was eight decades ago. New Zealand High Commissioner HE Jonathan Curr highlighted the deep cultural and historical ties between the nations. He emphasised that storytelling lies at the heart of both Solomon Islands culture and Māori tradition in Aotearoa New Zealand. “Through stories, we remember who we are, where we come from, the events that shaped us, and the responsibilities we carry for future generations,” Curr said. He noted New Zealand’s special connection to the surrounding waters, pointing to the nearby wreck of HMNZS Moa, a Royal New Zealand Navy minesweeper sunk in combat in April 1943. Curr praised the collaborative international effort to preserve this history. He also acknowledged the vital contributions of New Zealand volunteer Nat Dixon, who worked with local authorities and elders to curate the exhibition. Museum tells story of Tulagi’s colonial and wartime past

BY JOSES SAREN The Nambawan Haus Museum’s exhibitions in Central Islands place Tulagi’s history at the centre of the Solomon Islands’ national story, tracing more than 2,500 years of Central Islands history from first settlement through European contact, colonial administration and the Second World War. In his keynote address at the official opening of the museum on Tuesday this week, Minister for Culture and Tourism (MCT) James Bonunga said Tulagi’s role as the former administrative capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, and its place in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War, deserves permanent recognition. He said many of the decisions that shaped the country today were made on the island, and that the relics, stories and memories from that period remain an important chapter of Solomon Islands history. Bonunga said the museum also honours the sacrifices of those who lived through the war. He added that Tulagi and neighbouring islands witnessed some of the Pacific’s most significant military operations, and the site continues to hold international interest as one of the region’s recognised World War Two heritage locations. The museum’s exhibition traces this history through dedicated galleries, including an Early Contact room chronicling the arrival of explorer Álvaro de Mendaña and later, whalers and traders, a British Colonial Room documenting the establishment of the Protectorate under Resident Commissioner Woodford, and a dedicated WWII Zone. A panel marking the 3 May 1942 Japanese invasion of Tulagi details how occupying forces rebuilt a damaged seaplane base on nearby Tanambogo Island and constructed an airstrip on Guadalcanal later named Henderson Field — now the site of Honiara’s international airport. Bonunga said long before foreign contact, Gela was a centre of traditional leadership, navigation and cultural exchange, and that the museum’s stories of Kula trade and community life preserve knowledge that continues to shape the identity of Central Islands people today. “History shapes our identity. BY JOSES SAREN The Nambawan Haus Museum has been officially opened in Tulagi, Central Islands Province. Prime Minister Matthew Wale cut the ribbon on the Nambawan Haus Museum yesterday officially opening what organisers describe as the country’s flagship heritage tourism site. Standing with the Prime Minister for the ribbon-cutting were Premier of Central Islands Province Kenneth Sagupari and Minister for Culture and Tourism (MCT) James Bonunga. The ceremony, held under the theme “Preserving Our Past, Inspiring Our Future” drew hundreds of guests including chiefs and elders of Nggella, staff and students of Woodford International School and King George VI school, representatives of Solomon Islands National University, and diplomatic and defence officials from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. Guests seated under the marquee for the opening ceremony, dignitaries in leis and kastom shirts in the front rows, with US military and Coast Guard personnel among them. Photo Supplied Prime Minister Wale and Vice Admiral Joseph Buzzella, Commander of the US Coast Guard in the Pacific, were met with a kastom welcome on their way in, with warriors in traditional dress — grass skirts, body paint, tusk necklaces, spears and stone axes — staging a customary ambush along the path before the pair were guided up the flower-draped stairway to the museum grounds. The formal programme opened with the national anthem and the raising of three flags — the Solomon Islands, Central Islands Province and Union Jack — by Central Islands Provincial police, followed by an opening prayer and blessing of the exhibition led by Rt Rev Steven Koete. Photo by Joses Saren According to welcome remarks by Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Bunyan Sivoro, the museum’s origins trace back to 2013, when Dr Paul Roughan and his team began researching the original residence of Charles Morris Woodford, the first Resident Commissioner of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, with a view to reconstructing it as a museum on its original site. The exhibition fit-out, delivered by Millicent Design, was handed over last year, with the building itself completed earlier. In his keynote address, Minister Bonunga said the museum represents the government’s commitment to reform, empowerment, accountability and transformation, and framed heritage as a foundation for sustainable national development. Photo by Joses Saren He said Tulagi’s history as the former administrative capital, its role in the Second World War, and its place in the region’s Kula trade network all deserved permanent recognition, and described the museum as “a living institution” whose work continues beyond the opening-day milestone. Photo Supplied British High Commissioner Paul Turner in his speech explained that the museum is on the site of the residence of the first British Commissioner of Solomon Islands during the British Protectorate era. “Charles Woodford was the first Commissioner of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1896 – 1915. “The Commissioner’s residence in Tulagi was rebuilt and now stands as a museum of the British Protectorate and also the Ngella people.” Mr Turner referenced Charles Woodford in his speech, quoting Woodford who said that he found a place “worthy of devoting the rest of his life”. Turner said Woodford had been dedicated to the islands. US Chargé d’Affaires Dan O’Hara also delivered remarks, while a representative of the Japanese Embassy spoke in place of Ambassador Keiichi Higuchi. Organisers said the next phase of work will focus on improving road access to Tulagi’s heritage sites, expanding the museum’s exhibitions, and developing a National Museum Strategy in partnership with the Central Islands Provincial Government. The morning program takes place at the Museum, followed by an opportunity to view the new exhibition. Located in the former official residence of the resident commissioner of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, the Nambawan Haus Museum is one of the Solomons’ most significant heritage sites. Tulagi museum set to open next week

BY TONY IROGA The long-awaited Nambawan Haus Museum in Tulagi will officially open on July 28, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) says. The museum is a joint project between MCT and the Central Islands Provincial Government. It will become the country’s second museum and a place to preserve the history and culture of Central Islands Province. Prime Minister Matthew Wale is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony. He will be joined by Central Islands Premier Kenneth Sagupari, members of the provincial assembly, senior government officials and development partners. The Ministry said the museum is more than just a heritage building. “It will serve as a centre for education, research and cultural exchange while protecting the province’s history, traditions and identity for future generations,” the Ministry said. The museum is located on a hill overlooking Tulagi Harbour and Iron Bottom Sound. It is housed in the restored former residence of Charles Woodford, the British Resident Commissioner during the colonial period. The building was officially handed over to the Ministry and the Central Islands Provincial Government in May last year after major restoration work. According to the Ministry, visitors will learn about more than 2,500 years of Central Islands history. The displays cover the early Kula people, the arrival of European explorers, the British Protectorate, Tulagi’s time as the country’s colonial capital, the Second World War and the formation of Central Islands Province. The Ministry said the museum will continue to expand its collections through research and close partnership with local communities. One of the main attractions is the Binabina War Canoe, rebuilt by master canoe builder William Semu of Haroro using traditional materials and customary building methods. “The project has not only restored an important traditional canoe but has also helped revive and preserve an important cultural practice for future generations,” the Ministry said. The canoe is displayed inside the specially built Vale Kiala (Kastom Canoe House), where visitors can learn about one of Central Islands Province’s important cultural traditions. The Ministry said the opening of the Nambawan Haus Museum reflects the Government’s commitment to protect the country’s heritage, strengthen cultural identity, support education and research, and promote cultural tourism as part of sustainable economic development. GUADALCANAL UNVEILS FOUR-DAY CELEBRATION PROGRAM | Guadalcanal Province is preparing for its 2026 Second Appointed Day celebrations with a four-day program that will promote culture, unity and development. The celebrations will run from 31 July to 3 August at SINU Village in Panatina and the National Stadium under the theme "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity." A major highlight will be the Float Parade on 31 July, where participants from across the province will march to SINU Village for the official opening ceremony. Visitors will also enjoy a Cultural Village featuring traditional performances, exhibitions, demonstrations and live entertainment by Guadalcanal bands, artists and string bands. Panel discussions involving former politicians, chiefs, church leaders, women and youth representatives will focus on important issues affecting the province, while government ministries and private companies will showcase their services through public information stalls. Registrations are still open for performers, choirs and speech contest participants until 27 July. The speech contest will cover topics including keeping Guadalcanal clean, saying no to illegal drugs and empowering the province for national unity and prosperity. A choir competition is also open to schools, churches, youth groups and community organisations. Organisers are encouraging constituencies, schools, churches and community groups to take part in the celebrations and have reminded residents to wear their official constituency colours during the Float Parade. The tournament ended last week with a successful prize presentation ceremony at Mamalade community. Representing the organising committee, David Wairimalefo congratulated all participating communities and teams for taking part in the volleyball competition and contributing to the success of the event. The 2026 Independence volleyball tournament was made possible through funding support from Central Kwara’ae Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Ricky Fuo’o. “On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to sincerely thank all participating teams for your enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and support throughout the tournament. Your participation made this event a great success,” Wairimalefo said. “I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to our major sponsor, Hon. Ricky Fuo’o, Member of Parliament for Central Kwara’ae Constituency, for his generous support in making this tournament possible. “Your commitment to supporting youth and community sporting activities is truly appreciated.” Wairimalefo also thanked match officials, referees, volunteers, supporters, and everyone who contributed towards the success of the tournament. “We look forward to an even bigger and better tournament this Christmas,” he said.
