Provincial Reporters End Fact-check Training,
Urged to Defend Truth in Journalism

Provincial-based news reporters from Malaita, Western and Choiseul province have strengthened their journalism skills after successfully completing a fact-checking and verification training programme on Friday - 31st July.
The training was organised by BBC Media Action, with sessions facilitated by Island Sun journalist Irwin Angaki and Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) journalist Fredrick Kusu.
The completion of the training was marked with a certificate presentation ceremony held at the Media Association Of Solomon Island (MASI) office.
The closing was graced with the presence of the British High Commissioner Paul Robert Turner, who congratulated participants and highlighted the important role journalists play in promoting accurate information and strengthening democracy.
The training focused on improving reporters’ ability to verify information, identify misinformation and apply professional fact-checking practices.
Turner said strengthening media capacity through programmes such as the fact-checking training is important in ensuring the country maintains a responsible and credible media sector.
“We see it as really crucially important that a vibrant media is rooted in Solomon Islands, because that's the guardian of democracy,” he said.
He added that journalists must continue asking questions, investigating issues of public interest and holding leaders accountable.
“One of the safeguards of a true democracy is if you can have a media that is actually questioning and to an extent giving a government a hard time, because that's what you're there for,” Turner stated
He also praised the focus on fact-checking and verification, describing the skills as essential in today’s changing information environment.
“What you've been doing in terms of fact-checking and verification is absolutely crucial,” he said.
He further encouraged reporters to use the knowledge gained from the training to strengthen public trust in journalism and ensure communities receive accurate and reliable information.
The training was attended reporters of from SIBC, Island Sun, Solomon Star and freelancers.

GUADALCANAL Province will for the first time host all eight provinces in a traditional feasting programme on Monday, August 3, at the National Stadium.
The initiative is part of the 42nd Guadalcanal Province Second Appointed Day Celebrations, themed “Unity, Leadership and Development for a Better Guadalcanal”.
Organising Committee Chairman, Maesac Suia, said the Executive has agreed that each of Guadalcanal’s eight constituencies will host and share food with one province during the celebration.
The allocations are as follows: Northwest Guadalcanal Constituency with Choiseul Province; West Guadalcanal Constituency with Western Province; South Guadalcanal Constituency with Rennell and Bellona Province; East Guadalcanal Constituency with Makira-Ulawa Province; East Central Guadalcanal Constituency with Central Province; Northeast Guadalcanal Constituency with Temotu Province; Central Guadalcanal Constituency with Isabel Province; and North Guadalcanal Constituency with Malaita Province.
Mr Suia said everyone who wishes to attend is welcome to join the celebrations and share the feast with their respective provincial hosts.
“This is a simple but meaningful gesture of sharing our special day with our brothers and sisters from across Solomon Islands. It reflects our Melanesian values of respect, friendship, unity, and togetherness,” he said.
He said the initiative shows that the celebrations are not only about Guadalcanal Province, but also about strengthening relationships with all provinces and promoting national unity.
“The sharing of food has always been an important part of our culture. Through this initiative, we are using our celebration to build stronger connections and remind ourselves that despite our different provinces, we are one Solomon Islands,” Suia said.
He added that the initiative is aligned with the 2026 theme, where unity is strengthened through togetherness, leadership is demonstrated through service, and development is achieved when people and provinces work together.
The 42nd Second Appointed Day celebrations will include cultural activities, live band music, presentations, students’ speech contests, a choir competition, panel discussions, exhibitions and other programs showcasing the cultural identity, achievements and future aspirations of Guadalcanal Province.

Leader of Independent Agovaka echoes PM Wale’s plan to set up commission to deal with salaries of public servants, constitutional officials, politicians

Leader of the Independent Group Peter Shanel Agovaka has thrown in support for Prime Minister Matthew Wale’s plan to set up an independent commission to look after wages and remuneration of public servants, constitutional office holders and parliamentarians.
Mr Agovaka goes further, challenging PM Wale’s government to implement this plan, saying if government does not then the Independent group will.
Government has welcomed the Independent’s support describing it as ‘encouraging’.
“It is encouraging to see the Independent Group echo sentiments similar to those expressed by the Prime Minister. This approach is a key pillar of the GREAT Government’s policy agenda, one that arguably should have been pursued by previous administrations, given its importance and the need for decisive policy action. Nevertheless, it is equally positive to note a growing sense of bipartisan support on this matter,” a Government response sent to Island Sun last night said.
Meanwhile, Independent leader Mr Agovaka also echoed similar sentiment to PM Wale’s revocation of the recent pay rise, saying he is also prepared to do the same.
In a statement yesterday, Agovaka said while he is prepared to forgo any increase in his parliamentary salary, symbolic gestures alone will not address the deeper structural problems affecting public sector remuneration.
“I am prepared to forgo any increase in my salary as a Member of Parliament. But talk is cheap. Refusing a pay rise on its own will not improve the wages of our teachers, nurses, police officers, public servants and the thousands of hardworking Solomon Islanders struggling with the rising cost of living.”
He said the issue should not be reduced to political point-scoring or populist rhetoric.
“This debate deserves a serious national conversation. The real question is not whether Members of Parliament should accept a pay rise. The real question is whether Solomon Islands has a fair, transparent and independent system for determining remuneration across the entire public sector.”
The Independent Group therefore calls on the Prime Minister to establish a bipartisan parliamentary committee to undertake a comprehensive review of the country’s remuneration framework, the statement said.
The committee should recommend the establishment of a National Wages and Remuneration Commission—an independent constitutional body responsible for determining salaries and remuneration for the public service and constitutional office holders based on objective, transparent and nationally consistent criteria, the Independent’s statement said.
Agovaka also supported the call for the abolition of the existing Parliamentary Entitlements Commission, arguing that Members of Parliament should no longer have a separate remuneration system disconnected from the wider public sector.
“There should not be one system for politicians and another for everyone else. Our remuneration framework must reflect fairness, transparency, fiscal responsibility and the national interest.”
The proposed National Wages and Remuneration Commission will independently review remuneration by considering economic growth, inflation, productivity, affordability, labour market conditions, and the need to attract and retain qualified public servants.
Such a system will remove the perception that politicians receive preferential treatment, strengthen public confidence in government institutions, and ensure remuneration decisions are made independently and consistently across the public sector, the statement said.
The Independent Group believes the current debate presents an opportunity to modernise Solomon Islands’ remuneration framework for the benefit of the entire nation, rather than focusing solely on parliamentarians.
Agovaka says it is time for the Government to turn its commitment to accountability into meaningful reform.
“If the GREAT Coalition is genuinely committed to fairness, accountability and good governance, then let us work together on bipartisan reforms that benefit every public servant, not just Members of Parliament.
“If the Government chooses not to act, the Independent Group will. We will introduce a Private Member’s Bill to amend the Constitution to establish a National Wages and Remuneration Commission and replace the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission with an independent constitutional framework that serves the interests of the entire nation.”

Family of one of the male students who was reported whipped by a teacher at the Sir Dudley Tuti college are moving to settle the matter culturally.
This followed a police case being opened earlier, which the student’s family requested to have withdrawn to allow cultural reconciliation with the teacher and school officials due to relations between them.
Police yesterday confirmed to Island Sun that the case was opened but later withdrawn for the said reasons.
An officer at the Honiara Central police station, speaking to Island Sun under condition of anonymity, said the student’s father called them yesterday asking withdrawal of the case since the family intends to settle the matter culturally with the teacher, education officials and school board members.
The police officer told Island Sun that preliminarily the case, with the evidences provided, had been ‘a strong one because corporal punishment is illegal in the country and would have been won regardless of whatever reason the accused might have for allegedly whipping the students’.
The officer said they did not have any reason to oppose the father’s request, therefore withdrew it yesterday.
Meanwhile the father told Island Sun via phone call from Tanabosu in Isabel province, his son had gone to Buala hospital following the incident due to suspected backbone injury.
However, x-ray results ruled out this concern. Instead the diagnosis said his son was suffering from soft tissue injury, the father said.
The father appeals for schools in Isabel to stop or avoid applying corporal punishment on students since it is no longer legal.
The father said the ordeal has caused his son, who is in form 5, to miss classes.
He also calls on the Isabel education authority to review this incident.
Regarding their request to settle the matter culturally, the father said his family members have a good relationship with the teacher.
“We have always been close, and taking this further would have changed that closeness, which is not something we wanted.”
Speaking to the Island Sun yesterday, Isabel Principal Education Officer (PEO) William Leguvaka said officials plan to travel to assess the matter sometime this week.
He said they are still waiting on a formal request from the school administration before they proceed with the matter.

Etupioh: Keeping Our Children
Safe Is a Shared Responsibility

Looking after and protecting children from violence and abuse is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of parents, families, communities, churches, schools, government agencies, and every member of society.
This was the key message delivered by the Western Provincial Government's Education Authority representative, Willy Etupioh, during the launch of the second phase of the Solomon Islands Endim Vaelens Againstem Pikinini (SIEVAP) project held last week at Imagination Island, just outside Gizo Town.
Speaking on behalf of the Western Provincial Government (WPG), Mr. Etupioh said the responsibility of caring for children should not rest solely with parents or government authorities. Instead, every individual has a role to play in ensuring children grow up in safe, supportive, and nurturing environments free from violence, neglect, and abuse.
"Our children are our future, and their safety and wellbeing should be everyone's concern," Mr. Etupioh said.
He stressed that while parents remain the primary caregivers, communities must also remain vigilant and work together to prevent all forms of violence against children.
"Children deserve to grow up in homes and communities where they feel safe, respected, and loved. Protecting them is not only a family responsibility but also a community responsibility," he said.
Mr. Etupioh acknowledged the efforts of organisations, development partners, community leaders, teachers, churches, and government ministries that continue to raise awareness about child protection across the country.
He said projects such as SIEVAP play an important role in educating communities about children's rights, encouraging positive parenting practices, and strengthening systems that respond to cases of child abuse and neglect.
The Western Provincial Government, he said, remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote child protection, improve education, and strengthen partnerships between government agencies, non-government organisations, and local communities.
Mr. Etupioh encouraged parents to spend more time with their children, listen to their concerns, and guide them with care, patience, and understanding.
He also called on community leaders to report cases of abuse and ensure children receive the protection and support they deserve.
He said ending violence against children requires a collective effort and that lasting change can only be achieved when everyone works together toward the same goal.
The second phase of the Solomon Islands Endim Vaelens Againstem Pikinini (SIEVAP) project aims to strengthen child protection systems, increase public awareness of children's rights, and empower communities to create safer environments where every child can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
The launch brought together representatives from the Western Provincial Government, national government ministries, development partners, civil society organisations, community leaders, and other stakeholders who reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights and wellbeing of children throughout the Solomon Islands.
The event also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration, community participation, and education in preventing violence against children and building a safer future for the next generation.

Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to support community development and education in Solomon Islands with the handover of four water tanks to St Joseph Tenaru Secondary School.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the school yesterday, Australia’s Acting High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Andrew Schloeffel said the project reflects the strong and growing partnership between Australia and Solomon Islands while demonstrating the importance of empowering local communities.
Mr Schloeffel acknowledged the presence of the Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA), John Maneniaru, Catholic Education Secretary of the Archdiocese of Honiara, Jackson Meke, St Joseph Tenaru Secondary School Principal Jeffrey Poea, members of the school board and the wider school community.
“We sincerely congratulate everyone who was involved in bringing this important project to life,” he said.
“This project reflects not only the collaboration between Australia and Solomon Islands, but also our shared vision for a brighter future for the people of this country.”
He said Australia believes the best development outcomes are achieved when local communities are empowered to take ownership of projects that improve their wellbeing.
“This project is another example of a strong partnership between our two countries, where local communities are supported to take charge of their future,” he said.
He revealed that the St Joseph Tenaru water tank project is one of 342 community partnership projects funded by Australia across Solomon Islands since 2019.
“Australia has funded projects in every constituency and every province, making a real difference to the lives of thousands of Solomon Islanders,” he said.
He added that Australia has invested more than SBD74.5 million in community development initiatives and local businesses through its Community Partnerships Programme.
“We have recently opened a new round of Community Partnerships funding, and we encourage schools and community leaders to submit applications so we can continue supporting local development,” he said.
Highlighting education as a key priority, Schloeffel said Australia remains committed to working closely with the Solomon Islands Government to improve access to quality education.
“Education is one of the most important areas of cooperation between Australia and Solomon Islands. We are proud to support the Government’s Free Education Policy and our shared commitment to ensuring every child has access to quality education,” he said.
Looking ahead, Schloeffel said both countries have a historic opportunity to further strengthen their relationship through a Comprehensive Bilateral Treaty.
“This treaty will elevate our partnership to a new level, built on trust, mutual respect and open dialogue,” he said.
He thanked the St Joseph Tenaru project committee, school leadership, community representatives, women’s representatives and volunteers for their dedication in delivering the project.
“In celebrating these new water tanks today, we are also celebrating a brighter future that Australia and Solomon Islands continue to build together through our enduring partnership,” he said.
St Joseph Tenaru Secondary School Principal Jeffrey Poea expressed gratitude to the Australian Government, through the Australian High Commission to Solomon Islands, for funding the water tank project.
Mr Poea also acknowledged Australia’s previous support for the refurbishment of school buildings, valued at a total of SBD12 million, saying the assistance has significantly improved the school’s infrastructure and learning environment.

A teacher at Sir Dudley Tuti College in Isabel Province is under investigation after allegedly whipping three male students with a ‘timber stick’, leaving one of them hospitalised with a suspected spinal injury.
The incident occurred at around 6.30pm on Wednesday, July 22, while the students – one in Form 6, and two in Form 5 – were on duty as school caretakers during the term break.
A source on the ground, who requested anonymity, said the teacher struck the boys across their backs without warning, in what one witness described as a mixture of “punches and whips”.
Community members say the students were simply carrying out their caretaker duties when they were allegedly attacked without provocation.
The School Principal told Island Sun yesterday the matter was an internal one and that reports circulating on Facebook were exaggerated and misleading the public.
He maintained the incident was not as serious as portrayed.
The principal said the teacher was related to some of the girls in the school dormitory, and that he (principal) was currently in town and still waiting for the school to formally report the incident to him.
Isabel Principal Education Officer (PEO) and School Review Standards Officer, Ruben Dotho Jr, told the Island Sun that so far there has been no official report from the school.
He said he is still waiting for a formal written complaint from the School Principal before the matter can be acted upon. Almost a week on, no formal report has been received.
Speaking to the Island Sun yesterday, Provincial Minister for Health and Medical Services, Nathaniel Gudfraede, said one of the victims, a Form 5 student, is currently warded at Buala Hospital, where he is undergoing x-rays for a suspected spinal injury.
Hospital staff say his back pain and possible bone damage are consistent with the alleged whipping.
“The teacher should not apply the old system of whipping students. We expect our children to be safe in the hands of the school, and that kind of discipline should not be practised. It was a very sad report to hear,” said Gudfraede.
The teacher could not be reached for comment.
The other two students sustained less severe injuries and are said to be recovering under medical care.
It is understood the case has been forwarded to the police for further investigation.
Police commander for Isabel province could not be reached yesterday for comments.

AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES BRING WORLD-CLASS STUDY OPPORTUNITIES CLOSER TO SOLOMON ISLANDERS
Fifteen leading Australian universities visited Honiara from 13 to 14 July 2026 for a Study Australia Education Mission (Roadshow), giving Solomon Islanders a unique opportunity to explore study options, connect directly with university representatives and take the next step towards an Australian education.
The roadshow welcomed Australia Awards Scholarships applicants for Intake 2027, self-funded students, alumni, and education sector partners.
Through one-on-one consultations, participants gained practical information on courses, campuses, student life and the support available to help them succeed.
Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Jeff Roach, hosted participating universities, Australia Awards alumni Austrade representatives, and Solomon Islands Government officials at his residence on 14 July.
“Every Solomon Islander who studies in Australia carries with them not only their own hopes and ambitions, but also the potential to bring new skills, ideas and connections back home,” High Commissioner Roach said.
“That is why education is such an important pillar of the Solomon Islands-Australia partnership. Investing in people is one of the most powerful things we can do as a development partner.”
Solomon Islands Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development Deputy Secretary Corporate, Coldrine Kolae, encouraged Solomon Islanders to take advantage of study opportunities in Australia, saying the knowledge and experience gained are an investment in the country’s future development.
Australian Trade and Investment Commissioner for Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, Esther Sun, said it was important that Solomon Islanders knew about the full range of education opportunities available in Australia.
“This roadshow brings Australian education closer to Solomon Islanders, providing direct access to trusted information, expert guidance, and world-class study opportunities” Commissioner Sun said.
“It reflects our shared commitment to investing in people and empowering the next generation of leaders, professionals and change-makers.”
For many participants, the roadshow helped turn study aspirations into achievable plans.
One Australia Awards candidate for Intake 2027 said the event helped her better understand her preferred course, the university application process and what life would be like in her chosen Australian state.
As of February 2026, 137 Solomon Islanders were studying in Australia, including 77 Australia Awards scholars.
They are part of a growing community of students and alumni using Australian education to build skills, strengthen institutions and support communities across the country.

路演接待了申请2027年入学的“澳大利亚奖学金”(Australia Awards Scholarships)申请人、自费学生、校友及教育界合作伙伴。
通过一对一咨询,参与者获得了有关课程、校园、学生生活及帮助学生成功完成学业的支持服务等实用信息。
7月14日,澳大利亚驻所罗门群岛高级专员 Jeff Roach 在其官邸接待了参访大学代表、“澳大利亚奖学金”校友、澳大利亚贸易投资委员会(Austrade)代表及所罗门群岛政府官员。

Japan will help fund Solomon Islands’ free education policy through a concessional loan already signed, and has pledged support for a new school through the Sasakawa Foundation, Prime Minister Matthew Wale said upon his arrival home yesterday afternoon from an official visit to Tokyo.
Wale described Japan as a reliable, long-standing partner, saying past disappointments in the relationship had been overcome and bilateral ties realigned to a “good, reliable partnership”.
He said the concessional loan that was signed will ensure that the free education policy rolls out in full from January.
“We have money to start free education on January, full complete roll out,” Wale said.
He said Japan, through the Sasakawa Foundation, part of the Nippon Foundation, had pledged to build a new school, with further details to be worked out when the Foundation’s chief executive visits Solomon Islands next month.
“We are thinking that’s a TAFE, a national level TAFE institution,” Wale said, adding that the goal was to support the country’s STEM and skills objectives within the education system.
During the Tokyo visit, Wale was accorded a Guard of Honour and held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and also met Nippon Foundation Honorary Chair Yohei Sasakawa and JICA President Akihiko Tanaka, with whom Solomon Islands separately signed a Development Policy Loan for fiscal stability and economic resilience.

The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has secured a new grant from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to refurbish its Department of Fisheries Complex at the Ranadi Campus, strengthening facilities for fisheries education.
The grant agreement, worth up to US$54,548, was signed on Wednesday between SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau and KOICA Fiji Country Director Han Kyul Sam Cho.
According to a SINU statement, the funding will support the renovation of the Fisheries Department building under the Support for the Establishment and Capacity Building of Fisheries Studies in Solomon Islands project.
Professor Aqorau said the agreement reflects the strong partnership between Solomon Islands and the Republic of Korea.
“Today’s signing reflects the deep friendship and enduring partnership between the Republic of Korea and Solomon Islands. Through KOICA, the Government and people of Korea have consistently invested in strengthening higher education and human resource development in our country,” he said.
He said the refurbishment will provide students and staff with a modern learning environment that better supports practical training, research and innovation in fisheries.
“We are delighted that KOICA has once again demonstrated its confidence in SINU by supporting the refurbishment of this important facility. When completed, our students will enjoy a refreshed and attractive learning environment,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of fisheries to the country’s economy, saying the upgraded facility will help prepare future fisheries professionals to sustainably manage Solomon Islands’ marine resources.
The statement said under the agreement, SINU will oversee the design, procurement and construction of the refurbishment works, while KOICA will provide funding and technical support.
“The Fisheries Complex was originally funded by KOICA and built by Hatanga Limited. Once the refurbishment is completed, the facility will continue to be owned and maintained by SINU,” the statement said.
Professor Aqorau thanked KOICA and the Government of the Republic of Korea for their continued support, saying SINU looks forward to expanding cooperation in education, research, innovation and capacity building.
The refurbishment project is expected to improve teaching and learning for current and future fisheries students while supporting the wider fisheries sector in Solomon Islands.

EVERY child in Solomon Islands deserves to grow up free from violence, exploitation and harmful practices, Save the Children Solomon Islands Lead Advocacy Officer Fredrick Seni says.
Speaking during the launch of the second phase of the Solomon Islands Endim Vaelens Againstem Pikinini (SIEVAP) Project in Gizo, Seni said violence against children remains a serious concern and requires the collective commitment of everyone to address.
He said children make up the largest segment of Solomon Islands’ population and represent the country’s future, making their protection a shared responsibility.
“Children continue to experience violence in Solomon Islands, and that needs to stop.
“As parents, leaders, service providers, community members and partners, we all share the responsibility of ensuring that every child is safe, protected, heard and given the opportunity to thrive,” Seni.
He stressed that every child has the right to grow up in a safe and supportive environment where they can reach their full potential.
Seni also highlighted the importance of protecting girls from harmful practices that prevent them from accessing education and achieving their aspirations.
“Every girl deserves the opportunity to complete her education. Every child deserves adults who will stand up, speak out and protect their rights,” he said.
Seni challenged individuals, families and communities to reflect on the role they can play in creating safer environments for children.
“Today, I challenge each one of us to ask ourselves: What can I do to make my home, my village, my school and my community safer for children?” he said.
Seni emphasised that safeguarding children is not solely the responsibility of the government or development partners but of every member of society.
“Together, let us ensure that girls are sitting in classrooms, pursuing their dreams and preparing for a brighter future—not being married before they have even had the chance to be children,” he said.
The SIEVAP Phase Two project aims to strengthen efforts to prevent violence against children and promote safer communities through collaboration with government agencies, churches, community leaders, youth groups and development partners across Solomon Islands.

Discussions are now under way on the rollout of the government’s education commitments following a meeting between the Policy Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, (PIMEU), of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development’s (MEHRD) Senior Executive team last week.
A statement from MEHRD, said the meeting brought together the PIMEU Social Sector Team and MEHRD’s Senior Executive Management to review implementation progress, strengthen policy coordination, and advance key Government education priorities.
It said discussions in the meeting focused on the rollout of the Government for Reform, Empowerment, Accountability and Transformation (GREAT), flagship education commitments which are; Education for All, Education Reform, Free Education, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Teachers’ Welfare, and School Infrastructure Development.
The engagement highlighted that substantial progress is already underway with the majority of the Government’s priority commitments now reflected in MEHRD’s Annual Work Plan, demonstrating strong alignment between the GREAT Coalition’s policy vision and the Ministry’s implementation framework.
The meeting also identified opportunities to further strengthen implementation mechanisms and accelerate delivery of the Coalition’s flagship policies.
The statement said the timing of the engagement is significant as MEHRD undertakes a review of the current National Education Action Plan (NEAP), and is preparing for the next phase of the nation’s education strategy.
The statement said, the Government remains committed to ensuring that every Solomon Islands child has access to quality, inclusive and affordable education.
Implementation of the Free Education Policy and the wider Education Reform Agenda is a cornerstone of the GREAT Coalition’s vision to make education the most strategic investment in the nation’s future human capital.
The meeting concluded with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to intensify collaboration and accelerate implementation of the GREAT Coalition’s education priorities.
Together, they remain focused on delivering tangible improvements for students, empowering teachers, strengthening schools and centers, and creating better opportunities for communities across the Solomon Islands.

1958 SIG SCHOLARSHIPS UP FOR GRAB
A total of 1958 will be offered through the Solomon Islands Government next year 2027.
Application for the scholarships is now open.
The scholarships cater for those wishing to upgrade skills training at rural training centres in the country to undertaking their Phd studies overseas.
The National Scholarships Division within the Solomon Islands Tertiary Education and Skills Authority announced that submissions of all scholarships is open from Sunday 19th July until Sunday 27th September 2026.
The scholarships are offered as fully-funded, tuition only and under constituency.
Papua New Guinea through its bilateral deal is also supporting the scholarships for those wishing to study in PNG institutions.
The scholarships opens for those wish to further their education and gained qualification at institutions in the country and overseas.

Four teachers and four students from Perch Christian School travelled to South Korea to participate in an international school exchange program aimed at promoting cultural understanding, educational development, and global leadership.
Speaking to SUNDAY ISLES about the initiative, Perch Christian School Director and Panatina Ward, Honiara City Council (HCC) Councillor, Lydia Yeo said the exchange program has its roots in discussions held in 2019 during a visit to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea by then-opposition leader, now Prime Minister Mathew Wale, and Former MP North-west Guadalcanal Constituency Hon. Bodo Dettke.

During that visit, a request was made for greater support in youth cultural education. This led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Assembly delegation, the Seoul National University Rainwater Research Centre, and the World Youth Exchange Federation.
“The program focuses not only on educational exchanges but also on humanitarian efforts, including the installation of rainwater facilities in underprivileged communities where access to safe drinking water is limited, it also provides global educational internship opportunities for students and teachers,” Yeo explained.
While in South Korea, the Solomon Islands delegation will take part in a range of cultural and educational activities, including the Youth Culture Expo organised by the World Youth Exchange Federation.
Yeo said the exchange is expected to provide participants with valuable opportunities to experience different cultures, gain exposure to advanced educational environments, and build meaningful relationships with students and educators from around the world.
“This program allows participants to share educational visions, experience a more advanced cultural environment, and achieve both spiritual and personal growth,” she said.
The exchange program brings together the Korean Council of Schools, Christian schools from various countries, and participants from 14 nations across Oceania, making it one of the region’s largest international educational exchange initiatives.
Yeo said she hopes the Perch Christian School team will return home with new knowledge, broader perspectives, and stronger leadership qualities.
“We hope they will experience advanced educational models and diverse cultures firsthand. Beyond expanding their academic and cultural understanding, we want them to develop strong ethics and sound values so they can grow into global leaders who will contribute to the future development of the Solomon Islands and the international community,” she said.
Although the international exchange program has been operating since the MOU was signed in 2019, Solomon Islands participants have only joined in recent years. According to Yeo, since taking on the role of City Consular in 2024, she has actively encouraged the participation of Solomon Islands teachers and students.
“This year marks the third time that students and teachers from the Solomon Islands have participated in the program. It represents another important step in strengthening cultural and educational cooperation between our countries,” said Yeo.

Ela Motors Solomon Islands has donated 12 toolboxes filled with automotive tools to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Automotive Engineering Department to strengthen practical training for automotive apprentices.
According to a SINU statement issued yesterday, the tools were officially handed over during a brief ceremony at the university’s Kukum Campus.
Ela Motors Finance and Administration Manager Ravneel Kumar presented the donation, saying the company was pleased to support the department’s training programmes.
Mr Kumar said although the tools were previously used, they remain in good condition and are suitable for practical learning.
Receiving the donation, SINU Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Director Solomon Pita, speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic), staff and students, thanked Ela Motors for its support.
He described the donation as an investment in the future of SINU students, saying the tools will help apprentices gain practical experience and hands-on skills needed in the automotive industry.
He said the donation will also strengthen the department’s ability to deliver apprenticeship training, competency-based programmes, short courses and other automotive training.
He thanked Ela Motors management and staff for their commitment to support technical and vocational education and expressed hope that the partnership will continue to grow for the benefit of students and the country’s automotive sector.
Head of the Automotive Engineering Department Samuel Kwaoga said the donated equipment will give apprentices greater access to industry-standard tools and improve their practical training.
Mr Kwaoga also acknowledged Apprenticeship Coordinator Toni Sego for initiating discussions with Ela Motors that led to the donation.
He said Mr Sego’s efforts in engaging the private sector had secured a valuable contribution that will benefit automotive students for years to come.
Meanwhile, Mr Sego urges students to take good care of the donated tools so future apprentices will also benefit from them.

GUGUHA Community High School in Isabel Province has been selected as one of 10 schools nationwide to benefit from the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded Solomon Islands Senior Secondary Education Improvement Project.
Senior Education Officer and School Inspector for the Isabel Education Authority, Reuben Dotho, confirmed that the school has been included in the project and implementation is expected to begin soon.
He said Guguha CHS is fortunate to be among the selected schools that will benefit from the initiative, which aims to improve the quality of education in senior secondary schools across the country.
“We are pleased that Guguha Community High School has been selected as one of the recipient schools under this important project,” Dotho said.
He acknowledged the Asian Development Bank and the Solomon Islands Government for choosing Guguha CHS as one of the beneficiaries.
According to project information, the proposed Senior Secondary Education Improvement Project will focus on improving learning outcomes for senior secondary students through the expansion of climate-resilient school facilities, provision of quality teaching equipment, and strengthening school leadership in climate resilience and modern teaching practices.
The project is also expected to improve student access to education, increase retention rates, and boost the number of days students spend in school through the construction and upgrading of small-scale infrastructure at 10 senior secondary schools across the country.
Each of the nine provinces will have one participating school, with an additional school located outside Honiara also included in the program.
A key component of the project is to address barriers faced by female students. The initiative will pilot innovative solutions that support gender equality aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal 5 agenda on women’s empowerment and gender transformation.
The project will also create opportunities for experienced female educators to advance into leadership positions within the education sector.
Education officials in Isabel Province have welcomed the project, saying it will strengthen teaching and learning environments while creating better opportunities for students and teachers at Guguha Community High School.

THREE secondary schools in Isabel Province are expected to adopt the School Meal Programme as part of ongoing efforts to improve health and educational outcomes of students.
Senior Education Officer and School Inspector for the Isabel Education Authority, Reuben Dotho, confirmed that Sir Dudley Tuti College, Dr Hendry Welcman College and Allardyce Provincial Secondary School have been selected to participate in the programme.
He said the necessary arrangements have already been completed, although the official rollout date for the programme in the three schools is yet to be announced.
According to Dotho, the School Meal Programme will play a significant role to enhance the health, education and overall well-being of children in Solomon Islands.
“In many rural and remote communities, access to nutritious food can be challenging due to poverty, geographical isolation, and the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.
“A well-managed school meal programme helps address these challenges while supporting children’s learning and development,” he said.
The School Meal Programme is currently being piloted in Isabel and Western Provinces through funding provided by the Government and people of Japan.
The initiative is supported by a US$3.4 million grant, equivalent to approximately SBD28.7 million, and is being implemented through a partnership between UNICEF Pacific and the Solomon Islands Government.
The project was officially launched in February 2025 under the theme, “Eating Local, Eating Healthy.”
The programme aims to improve the nutritional status, health and educational outcomes of school children by providing healthy, locally produced meals while at the same time strengthening local food systems and agriculture.
The pilot programme will provide valuable lessons for the development of a future national school meal programme that could eventually benefit more than 30,000 children throughout Solomon Islands.
Education authorities believe the initiative will contribute to better school attendance, improved concentration in classrooms and enhanced learning outcomes for students, particularly those living in rural and remote communities.

Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) notes with concern the recent salary hikes given to Members of Parliament.
It therefore calls for greater fairness, transparency and accountability in the determination of salaries and entitlements for Members of Parliament.
TSI sees these entitlement increases as an unjust burden on taxpayers, particularly at a time when Solomon Islanders in employment or otherwise continue to struggle with the rising cost of living and the increasing financial pressures facing families across the country.
Of grave concern is the question of the interpretation and implementation of the GREAT led Executive Government Policy of “Investing in people”.
The reality of the cost-of-living crisis is being felt in households throughout Solomon Islands. The prices of food, transportation, housing, school fees, utilities and other essential goods and services continue to place significant pressure on families whose incomes are already stretched to their limits.
Some ship operators charge children and students the same fare as they charge adults and at a time when students are returning to their schools this adds to their plight.
For many hard-working Solomon Islanders, the daily challenge is simply trying to make ends meet, providing food, water, shelter, clothing, and an education for their children, extended and immediate families, getting their children to school etc.- making ends meet.
Families are working hard to pay school fees, meet transport costs and provide basic necessities for their children. For many, there is little or no room left to save, invest or improve their standard of living.
These salary hikes could have gone into the GREAT government’s “free education” policy. It is now becoming more and more often that the Prime Minister is saying one thing, the GREAT Policy another or nothing at all and those working the Machinery of Government are doing the opposite or doing nothing.
Against this backdrop, TSI notes with great concern and objects the recent increase in salaries and entitlements of the Members of Parliament. It urges the Parliamentary Entitlement Commission (PEC) to revoke this award for the common good.
PEC having the legal right to make such awards does not make this decision a right one for the development of Solomon Islands. The decision must be viewed within the broader economic and social realities facing the people of Solomon Islands.
Effective from 1 st April 2026, the annual salary of an ordinary Member of Parliament will increase to approximately SBD288,615, while the annual salary of the Prime Minister increased to approximately SBD454,659. This reported increase is the second increase in parliamentary salaries in two years and has understandably generated public discussion, particularly given the continuing cost-of-living pressures experienced by ordinary citizens.
TSI recognises that the Members of Parliament (Entitlements) Commission (PEC) is established under the Constitution and has the legal mandate to determine and review the salaries and entitlements of parliamentarians. However, the existence of a legal mandate does not remove the need for transparency, accountability and public scrutiny.
The Constitution requires the Commission, when exercising its powers, to have regard to the state of the national economy and the financial position of the Government, movements in the level of pay and other entitlements received by other people in employment and changes in the retail price index and other relevant indicators of the cost of maintaining a reasonable standard of living for parliamentarians.
The Constitution also provides that, in determining parliamentary entitlements, consideration must be given to the rate of increase in salaries and entitlements of public officers. TSI calls for transparency.
The public who are the taxpayers deserves to know how these considerations were applied in arriving at the latest increase. Did the PEC take into account their fight and struggles for social services when deciding on this increase. Did PEC consult or call for submission from civil society like the previous chairmanship did or is this going to be the new mode of operation – complete lack of transparency and accountability.
The key question is not simply whether the PEC has the authority to review parliamentary salaries, but whether the decision reflects the economic reality of Solomon Islands, access to services by the people whose entrusted power it exercises, and whether the process has been transparent and accountable. It is the people that will ultimately fund the increase through their tax.
Whether one is employed, self-employed or otherwise all are subject to the same economic environment. We all live in the Solomon Islands where the cost of goods is the same. There is therefore no justifiable reason for increasing the salaries of Members of Parliament at this point in time.
Transparency Solomon Islands urges PEC to always take into consideration the context and status of the country’s economic, affordability in its decisions. They must consider the standard of living of the people who elected them to serve their needs.
Prime Minister Hon Matthew Wale, expressed in his victory speech to the nation that elected leaders are servants of the people, not their lords, they must continue to remind their leaders of their roles and responsibilities. This speech carries a significant importance in relation to the increased salary. It is important that this principle of servant leadership is reflected not only in words but also in decisions and actions.
A salary increase for political leaders, at a time when families are struggling to afford basic necessities, is nothing more than leaders putting their own interests ahead of the people they represent.
The GREAT Government has presented itself as a government committed to serving the people of Solomon Islands and strengthening institutions. TSI therefore calls on the Government to ensure that the principle of being a government of the people and not the people’s lords, is reflected in its approach to public remuneration, economic policy and social justice.
TSI demands for greater transparency in decision on the entitlements of MPs’ be it salaries or otherwise. The people deserve to know why the increase.
The explanation given by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Entitlement Commission is insufficient and not good enough. The people of Solomon Islands are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for fairness, proportionality, transparency and accountability.
TSI therefore calls on the GREAT Government to uphold its commitment to servant leadership and to ensure that fairness, transparency and accountability guide decisions affecting the lives and livelihoods of all Solomon Islanders.
The people are the masters of democracy. Leaders are entrusted to serve them.
For the good of the people of Solomon Islands, TSI calls for the revocation of the salary increase award. MPs are already remunerated adequately, their gas, water, electricity, rent, transport, servants, gardeners, security, medical bills overseas, clothing, sitting allowances, are already paid for by public funds or tax payers.
The rest, especially tax payers, do not have such lucrative remunerations. It is grossly irresponsible of PEC to increase their salary when they are the most privileged group in Solomon Islands.
