Hon. Gina Elected Unopposed as New Deputy Speaker of Parliament The Member of Parliament for South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepare, Hon. David Gina, has been elected unopposed as the new Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. Hon. Gina was declared elected following the close of nominations on Sunday, with the announcement made by the Clerk of the National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu. He was nominated by the Member of Parliament for West Makira and Minister for Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Hon. Derek Manuari. In his acceptance speech, Hon. Gina expressed deep gratitude to his fellow Members of Parliament for placing their confidence and trust in him, describing the appointment as a great honour and responsibility. "I accept this responsibility with deep humility, recognising that the Office of the Deputy Speaker is one of honour, impartiality and service to Parliament," Hon. Gina said. He pledged to uphold the dignity and integrity of Parliament, carrying out his duties with fairness, impartiality, and respect while serving both the House and the people of Solomon Islands. Hon. Gina's election fills one of Parliament's key leadership positions, with the Deputy Speaker responsible for presiding over parliamentary proceedings in the absence of the Speaker and ensuring the orderly conduct of debates in the House. //End//

Provincial Reporters Undergo Fact-Checking Training By ULUTAH GINA Solomon Star, Honiara Provincial reporters from Western, Malaita and Choiseul provinces are currently participating in a five-day fact-checking training workshop aimed at strengthening professional journalism and combating the spread of misinformation. The workshop has brought together journalists and reporters from the Solomon Star, Island Sun, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), as well as freelance journalists. Speaking to the Solomon Star on Wednesday, BBC Media Action facilitator Irwin Angiki said the training focuses on equipping journalists with practical fact-checking skills to help them verify information before publication. He said participants are learning techniques to verify images, videos and other content circulating on social media, as well as methods for checking information relating to people and current events. "With the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing use of artificial intelligence, journalists are facing new challenges in identifying false or manipulated content," Irwin said. He explained that the workshop covers ways to detect misinformation, disinformation and other forms of misleading information that journalists encounter in their daily work. "Fact-checking is not an easy task. It requires specialised skills, the right techniques, right tools and continuous practice to ensure accurate and credible reporting," he said. BBC Media Action Coordinator Sina Adrian said, the training is designed to strengthen the capacity of provincial journalists by enhancing their ability to verify information and maintain high professional standards in news reporting. The workshop, hosted by BBC Media Action, began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday. It is being held at the MASI Office in Gizo.

Verify and fact check training for province-based reporters underway

BY RODRICK DESURI Auki A one-week training for provincial-based reporters kicked off yesterday at the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) office. The training, supported by BBC Media Action, focuses on verifying and fact-checking information, and aims to equip and expand the knowledge and skills of reporters as the use of social media rises. President of the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI), Ofani Eremae, welcomed the reporters and urged them to take this opportunity to learn something new and make the most of the week. He thanked BBC Media Action for their support in making the training possible for the provincial reporters. “I understand that nowadays, we know everything is migrating from physical space to online space, and I urge all of you to make the most of this week and learn as much as you can,” he said. “Also, I want to thank Adrian Sina for his relationship with the BBC that made this training possible for you (provincial), even though similar training was held earlier this year for the Honiara-based reporters.” He added that it’s also a great chance for the provincial-based reporters to ask and share their views and issues faced in the provinces. “On behalf of MASI, I want to extend my acknowledgment to the BBC Media Action for making the training workshop possible,” he said. Editors of Island Sun, Irwin Angiki, and SIBC, Fredrick Kusu, are the trainers. Adrian Sina, BBC MA’s project coordinator facilitates. Seven participants from Western, Choiseul and Malaita provinces represent Island Sun, SIBC, Solomon Star and a freelancer. The current session follows a similar one held in May this year for Honiara-based reporters. The training concludes on Saturday, August 1.
