Captain’s treble sends Solomon Islands into U-19 semi-finals

SOLOMON Islands U-19 captain Jayroll Patty produced a match-winning performance today, scoring a hat-trick to fire his side to a 3-1 victory over New Caledonia and secure a place in the semi-finals of the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship in Samoa.
Patty struck three times at the Samoa Football HQ in Apia, scoring in the 36th, 45+3rd and 74th minutes to lead the Solomon Islands to their second consecutive Group A victory.
According to the official OFC match report, New Caledonia were reduced to 10 men in the 18th minute following the dismissal of Kyllian Wiako for violent conduct.
The Solomon Islands captain opened the scoring in the 36th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake before New Caledonia responded through Jemmanuel Siwoine in the 43rd minute.
But Patty restored the lead deep into first-half stoppage time, sending the Solomon Islands into the break 2-1 ahead.
The skipper completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute to seal a 3-1 victory and confirm the Solomon Islands’ progression to the last four. OFC also reported that the result put the Solomon Islands in control of Group A.
Reflecting on the performance after the match, Patty credited the result to the collective effort of the team.
“Yeah, teamwork, teamwork. Performance was good. We stuck to our game plan,” Patty said.
“The boys, the coaches, Franco... and yeah, good performance, teamwork. We deserved the three points.”
Despite scoring all three goals, Patty was quick to emphasise the contribution of his teammates when asked about his hat-trick.
“Yeah, a hat-trick here is not easy. Teamwork, hard work,” he said.
“Yeah, sharing the ball, and I scored. Yeah, thank you for the hard work.”
The Solomon Islands had entered the match on the back of a 1-0 victory over Papua New Guinea in their opening Group A match, meaning the win over New Caledonia gave them six points from two matches. OFC’s competition information confirms the Solomon Islands opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over PNG.
With the semi-final place secured, Patty said the team will now focus on correcting its mistakes and prepare for the next challenge.
“Yeah, work on mistakes. Mistakes are normal, and yeah, build up for the next game,” he said.
The captain also dedicated the victory to supporters back home, urging them to continue backing the team.
“We won here for Solomon Islands, our beloved country,” Patty said.
“Keep on praying behind the team. We are still on the mission, halfway yet. Thank you so much.”
The Solomon Islands will now turn their attention to their final Group A match against hosts Samoa on September 7, before the semi-finals on September 11.

Unbeaten leaders head into Day 17 as Kaliki Futsal League race heats up

HAUS 1 FC continues to set the pace in the Kaliki Futsal League, maintaining an unbeaten record at the top of the standings heading into Day 17 this Saturday.
The Bloody Ridge-based competition enters another round of action with Haus 1 FC sitting comfortably at the summit after recording 14 wins and one draw from 15 matches.
The Kaliki Futsal League, in its latest standings and fixtures update posted on its official social media platform, confirmed Haus 1 FC’s position at the top while releasing the Day 17 fixtures scheduled for Saturday at Kaliki Place, Bloody Ridge.
Haus 1’s impressive record gives the league leaders 43 points, with Destiny FC their closest challengers on 39 points after 13 wins and two defeats from 15 matches.
Youngsters FC and Masina Hunters FC are also firmly in the top-four picture; each having collected 34 points from 16 matches.
Further down the standings, AC Bullets, Huki 1 FC, Maramasike FC and Maramasike United remain within striking distance, making the battle for positions behind the leaders increasingly competitive as the league progresses.
Saturday’s Day 17 programme will feature several matches, including Masina Hunters FC against Roone Whites FC, Huki 2 FC versus Poison Paro, Maramasike FC against Ohio 1 FC, Kaliki 2 FC versus Weisuka United, and Triple M FC against Huki 1 FC.
The league has also placed a watch on the weather ahead of the weekend programme, with organisers saying they will provide updates should conditions force any changes to the fixtures.
“We continue to monitor our weather forecast in the meantime, we will update on any changes caused due to the weather,” the league said.
The Kaliki Futsal League, based at Kaliki Place in Bloody Ridge, continues to provide a competitive futsal platform while promoting youth development and community participation through the sport.

PNG U-16 coach eyes semi-finals

PAPUA New Guinea’s U-16 women’s team arrived in Honiara this morning with their sights firmly set on reaching the semi-finals and securing one of Oceania’s two qualification spots for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2027.
Speaking to Island Sun at Henderson International Airport shortly after the team’s arrival, PNG head coach Susan Steven said her young side is prepared for the challenge ahead.
Steven said the tournament will be a major test for the players, with PNG drawn in Group B alongside New Caledonia, Samoa and Tonga.
“All the countries have prepared to come here. So, the girls and I have also prepared to come, and whatever result comes up, it comes up,” Steven said.
The PNG coach made it clear that her team is not travelling simply to participate.
With the winner and runner-up earning qualification to next year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, Steven said the opportunity is a major motivation for her players.
“These two spaces to qualify for the World Cup are very important for all the countries to come,” she said.
“Everyone is thinking about coming here, and my plan for PNG is to go inside the World Cup.”
Steven also described the current squad as an important part of PNG’s women’s football development pathway, with most of the players having featured in the previous tournament and only a few newcomers joining the group.
“This Under-16 group is a development team. Most of them played in the last tournament, and only a few, I think a couple of them, are new and have joined the team,” she said.
For now, Steven’s message to her young players is simple: stay focused, work hard and give their best.
“The main thing now for these little girls is to focus on whatever we have planned for them,” she said.
“And I believe all of them will play their best, work hard for winning or achieving something in this tournament, and go into the semi-finals.”
PNG will open its Group B campaign against New Caledonia on Monday, September 7, before facing Tonga on September 10 and Samoa on September 13 at the National Stadium.
The OFC U-16 Women’s Championship runs from September 6-19 in Honiara, with the top two teams earning Oceania’s qualification places for the 2027 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Acting Commissioner of Police James Aitorea says the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) is preparing to investigate findings contained in the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) and 2023 Pacific Games audit reports.
Speaking at his first media conference today, Aitorea said he had yet to receive any formal referrals from the latest audit report, but assured the public that police would follow up on the findings once the relevant reports and referrals were received.
“Yes, I am in the process of preparing for the investigation,” Aitorea said.
The Acting Commissioner, who has been in the position for about a month, said he was in the process of putting together a team of professionals to conduct the investigations.
He said the team would comprise both local investigators and experts from outside the country, with neutrality and professionalism being key considerations.
Aitorea said the investigation team would include forensic financial experts and experienced local police investigators to examine the financial and administrative issues identified in the audits.
He confirmed that the investigations would cover both the Pacific Games and ESP audits.
The announcement follows the release of audit reports raising serious concerns over the management and expenditure of public funds.
The Pacific Games Special Audit Report identified significant weaknesses in financial management, procurement and governance, while the ESP audit also raised concerns over compliance with government financial rules and the use of public funds.
Aitorea said police would focus on the findings contained in the reports once the necessary referrals and documentation were made available.
He stressed the need for the investigation team to be independent and neutral to ensure the matters are properly examined.
The proposed investigations could potentially lead to further action if evidence of criminal wrongdoing is established.
Aitorea said police would ensure the investigations were conducted by appropriately qualified professionals as the RSIPF moves to examine the serious concerns raised by the two audits.

Central Coast FC have marked their return to the SIFF Super League (S-League) in style, thrashing Sosa FC 9-0 in Wednesday’s midweek clash at Lawson Tama Stadium.
The defending champions were playing their first S-League match since returning from an impressive OFC Men’s Champions League campaign, where they finished runners-up.
Coast made their intentions clear early, with Hudyn Irodao and Rafa Le’ai, who scored twice, putting them 3-0 ahead at halftime.
Le’ai continued his impressive form after the break, adding four more goals to complete a six-goal haul, while Hudson Oreinema and Junior Fordney also found the net to seal a dominant victory.
The win now sees Central Coast go three wins from three matches this season.
Speaking after the match, Central Coast head coach Jacob Moli praised his players for their performance and said the focus has now shifted back to the S-League.
“It is great to return with a win. It was not an easy game, and I think my boys just returned from a big tournament.
"The feeling of playing at that level is still there with the boys, and it showed in today’s scoreline,” he said.
Moli also acknowledged the demanding schedule ahead, with Central Coast set to play a number of catch-up fixtures alongside their regular league matches.
He said managing the squad’s workload will be crucial as they look to maintain their current form.
“With this tight schedule, it will mainly be about how we manage ourselves. If we manage ourselves properly, I think it will help us continue our current form,” Moli said.
The Central Coast coach also praised star forward Le’ai, who appears to be regaining his best form following the Champions League campaign.
“He’s slowly getting back to his best, and it is also about confidence.
"It is so great to see him getting it back, which is not only great for us but also the national team,” Moli said.
With Central Coast aiming to successfully defend their S-League title for a third consecutive season, Moli admitted the challenge will be difficult with several teams also chasing the championship.
“We just have to be concentrated on the games at hand, and it has always been our focus to defend our title,” he said.
Meanwhile, another exciting round of fixtures is scheduled for this weekend at Lawson Tama Stadium as the S-League enters Matchweek Eight.

Participating teams in the OFC Under-16 Womens Championship have started arriving in Honiara.
The two week championship will be held in Honiara from this Sunday September 6 to Saturday September 19, 2026.
Eight teams are participating in the competition.
Hosts Solomon Islands have been drawn alongside defending champions New Zealand, Fiji, and the qualifying winner in Group A of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2026, whilst 2025 finalists Samoa join Tonga, New Caledonia and Tahiti in Group B.
Samoa and Cook Islands U-16 women’s teams were the first to arrive on Tuesday.
On Wednesday three more teams arrive.
They are; Fiji, New Zealand, and Tonga.
Despite few hiccups upon their arrival, the players and team officials have settled at their accommodation.
Two more teams - New Caledonia and Tahiti are expected to arrive before the opening this weekend.
First matches will commence on Sunday.
This two week competition will allow local football fans in Honiara to enjoy some football action from the young ladies.
Meanwhile, a media conference ahead of the competition will be held at the Coral Sea Resort on Friday where the coaches and captains will share their thoughts of their championship.

Coaches, captains set for media session
COACHES and captains of the participating teams will meet the media this Friday ahead of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2026, which kicks off in Honiara on Sunday.
The official pre-tournament media session will be held at the Coral Sea Resort at 1pm, providing an opportunity for the coaches and captains to discuss their preparations and expectations ahead of the regional competition.

Solomon Islands U-16 Women Defeat Senior Side in Final Tune-Up Ahead of Championship
The Solomon Islands Under-16 Women’s National Team recorded an impressive 1–0 victory over the senior Solomon Islands Women’s National Team in a friendly match at the National Stadium in Honiara last night.
The match, played at 7:00pm, formed part of the Under-16 side’s preparations for the 2026 Under-16 Women’s Championship, which gets underway in Honiara this Sunday.
Despite facing the more experienced senior national team, the young Solomon Islands side showed confidence, discipline and determination throughout the match. Their efforts were rewarded with the only goal of the game, securing a valuable 1–0 win.
The friendly provided an important opportunity for the Under-16 players to test themselves against senior-level opposition and gain valuable match experience ahead of the tournament.
The coaching staff will now look to use the match as an important assessment of the team’s strengths and areas that need further improvement before the championship begins.
With the Under-16 Women’s Championship set to take place in Honiara from Sunday, the young national team will enter the competition with confidence following their encouraging performance against the senior side.
The victory also highlights the potential of the next generation of Solomon Islands women footballers as they prepare to represent the country on home soil.

New Caledonia Defeat Hosts Samoa 4-2 in OFC U-19 Championship Opener
New Caledonia have made a strong start to their OFC U-19 Men’s Championship campaign, defeating hosts Samoa 4-2 in a six-goal Group A thriller at the Samoa Football HQ in Apia.
The 2024 finalists raced into a commanding position after scoring three goals inside the opening 20 minutes.
Ezekiel Wamowe opened the scoring inside two minutes after his penalty was saved by Samoan goalkeeper Iosua Iakopo Sapani, before Wamowe followed up on the rebound.
Fabrice Iopue then doubled the advantage from a free-kick delivery, with Kylian Wiako adding a third after breaking in behind the Samoan defence.
New Caledonia extended their lead two minutes into the second half when Landry Thupako caught Sapani off his line and produced an impressive long-range finish.
Samoa responded with two consolation goals to give the home crowd something to celebrate.
Isaiah Afamasaga scored after his effort rebounded off the left post, before Player of the Match Javier Arratia-Pio headed home from a corner at the back post to complete the scoring.
The result puts New Caledonia alongside Solomon Islands at the top of Group A, with both sides now preparing for a crucial meeting on Friday.
Hosts Samoa will look to recover against Papua New Guinea, with the loser of that match potentially facing early elimination from the tournament.

Solomon Islands Open OFC U-19 Campaign with 1-0 Win Over PNG
The Solomon Islands have made a winning start to the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship 2026, defeating Melanesian rivals Papua New Guinea 1-0 in their opening Group A match at the Samoa Football HQ in Apia.
Wilkenson Siosi scored the decisive goal inside the opening 16 minutes, racing onto a pinpoint pass from captain Jayroll Patty before calmly beating Papua New Guinea goalkeeper Ricky Hulana from close range.
The Solomon Islands controlled much of the match and created several opportunities to extend their lead, but Hulana produced a number of important saves to keep Papua New Guinea in the contest.
PNG also struggled to find a way back into the match, with the Solomon Islands maintaining pressure and controlling possession for long periods.
Their task became even more difficult in the 74th minute when Bomcege Basananuc was shown a second yellow card following a rash challenge, leaving Papua New Guinea with 10 players for the closing stages.
The result gives the Solomon Islands three valuable points at the start of their Group A campaign and continues their recent success against Papua New Guinea at youth level.
The two sides last met at the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship 12 years ago. More recently, the Solomon Islands defeated PNG at the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship a month ago, denying them a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The Solomon Islands will now look to build on the positive opening result as they continue their pursuit of the OFC U-19 title.

Fiji Fight Back to Thrash Vanuatu 7-2 in OFC U-19 Championship
APIA, Samoa – Fiji have made an impressive start to the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship, coming from behind to defeat Melanesian neighbours Vanuatu 7-2 at the Samoa Football HQ.
The Junior Bula Boys conceded an early goal but responded strongly, scoring six times in the second half to secure a convincing victory.
Ryan Naresh was the standout performer for Fiji, completing a hat-trick in just ten minutes. The Bula FC professional opened his account in the 67th minute, poking the ball past Vanuatu goalkeeper Jesse Thomas after being played in behind the defence.
Naresh doubled his tally moments later after capitalising on a goalkeeping error before completing his hat-trick with a composed finish into the bottom-right corner.
Abdullah Khairati, Ibraheem Afazal, Jovesa Uqe and Player of the Match Nicholas Franklin were also on the scoresheet for Fiji.
Vanuatu had taken the lead inside the opening 15 minutes through Rohan Masauvakalo, who combined well with captain Jean Patriano Natou before finding the net.
However, Fiji quickly turned the match around and dominated the second half. Jefta Taravaki added a late consolation for Vanuatu.
The result marks Fiji’s third consecutive U-19 victory over Vanuatu since 2018.
The seven goals are also Fiji’s most in an OFC U-19 Championship match since 2007.
Fiji now sit at the top of Group A alongside New Zealand after the opening matchday. The Junior Bula Boys will face New Zealand on Saturday, while Vanuatu take on Tahiti, with the loser potentially facing early elimination from the tournament.

SIBF ACTING CHIEF JOINS SPORTS

The Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) acting president Gloria Hong is currently in the United States participating in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) focused on sports management and youth leadership.
The US Embassy in Honiara confirmed Hong’s participation on Tuesday, saying she is joining fellow experts from across the East Asia Pacific region for the programme.
The IVLP will examine how the United States uses sport as a tool for education, youth development and community engagement.
Participants will explore the integration of sports into educational systems, the promotion of athletes’ health and safety, and ways of developing financially sustainable sports programmes.
The programme will also look at the commercial, academic and social benefits of youth sports and how effective sports management can contribute to youth leadership.
Hong’s participation provides an opportunity to gain international exposure and share experiences with sports leaders from the East Asia Pacific region.
The US Embassy said it looks forward to hearing about Hong’s experiences and ideas following her return to Honiara.
Her participation comes as basketball continues to develop in Solomon Islands, with the federation working to strengthen the sport and provide greater opportunities for young players.
The IVLP is a US government professional exchange programme that brings emerging and established leaders from around the world to the United States to exchange ideas and build professional networks.

Solomon Islands national triathlete Jude Timson Irowane is the only athlete from Solomon Islands among 45 athletes from 10 nations across the region taking part in the World Triathlon Development Regional Cup and Development Camp on Moorea Island, Tahiti.
The week-long event, delivered by Oceania Triathlon and AusTriathlon, also serves as the official test event for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti and another important step on the region’s pathway towards the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
Speaking to Star Sports from Tahiti, the 27-year-old said it was another privilege to return to a competitive environment and train alongside some of the region’s top triathletes.
“So honoured to be here for the camp. We have just finished off our test event and are now looking forward to the training camp in the coming days,” he said.
Irowane explained that the test event consisted of a 750-metre sprint swim, 20-kilometre cycling leg and a 5-kilometre run at the same venue that will host next year’s Pacific Games.
“So excited to once again train and compete against triathlon friends from across the region. It is also a privilege to learn new things in the sport as it continues to evolve in the region and become more competitive,” he added.
Irowane made his Pacific Games debut at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, finishing eighth overall in the Elite Men’s Super Sprint event, and is now looking to improve on that performance when the Games return next year in Tahiti.
However, the Solomon Islands triathlete acknowledged that his preparation has not been without challenges, particularly when it comes to finding suitable training opportunities at home.
“There have been so many ups and downs in my preparation, especially with sports management, personal commitments and environmental factors such as roads and places to train, as well as having no competitions back home.
“But I am always finding ways to do my own training and also join in with other Pacific triathletes to compete,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Irowane said the opportunity to participate in the regional camp was valuable as he continues to develop his skills and gain experience alongside athletes from across the Pacific.
He also took the opportunity to acknowledge the support of his family, friends and those who have helped him remain committed to the sport.
“I would also like to thank my secretary, Naomi Fujiyama, for her tireless efforts in making sure I train even when it’s difficult, and also my family and friends for their continuous support and prayers,” he added.
Meanwhile, the event runs from August 29 to September 4, opening with the Development Regional Cup sprint race before continuing with a four-day development camp covering swim, bike and run techniques, transition speed and open-water navigation.

DUO RETURN TO JOIN NATIONAL TEAM
Solomon Islands duo Don Keana and James Do’oro who are part of the Rewa Football Club [FC] in Fiji are returning to the country.
This came after they were called up to be part of the National Team in preparation for the 2026 Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister's Cup later this month in Fiji.
Rewa FC on Tuesday night announced that both players have been excluded from Rewa FC’s final 22-member squad for the Extra Battle of the Giants 2026.
“Both players have been an important part of our team and we thank them for their contribution to Rewa FC. We wish them all the very best on national duty.
“While their absence will be felt, the management has full confidence in the depth of our squad and the players ready to step up when called upon,” the club said.
The MSG) Prime Minister's Cup is scheduled to take place in Suva, Fiji from September 17 to October 3, 2026.
Papua New Guinea has announced its withdrawal from the competition.
Vanuatu is the current champion for the men while for the women - its PNG.

Siosi strike seals opening victory over PNG in Apia

SOLOMON ISLANDS have opened their OFC U-19 Men’s Championship campaign on a winning note after edging Papua New Guinea 1-0 in their Group A opener in Apia, Samoa, yesterday.
Wilkenson Siosi’s first-half strike proved enough for the young Bonitos to secure all three points in a tense tournament opener at the Samoa Football HQ – Field 1.

The official OFC match report confirmed that Siosi broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, with Solomon Islands holding on to their narrow advantage through the remainder of the match.
Solomon Islands started brightly and applied early pressure on the PNG defence, with captain Jayroll Patty coming close to opening the scoring from a free-kick in the third minute when his effort struck the post.
The pressure eventually paid off as Siosi found the breakthrough, with Patty playing an important role in the build-up before Siosi finished to give Solomon Islands a 1-0 lead.
PNG responded and gradually began to threaten, particularly towards the end of the first half, but the Solomon Islands defence stood firm to take the lead into the break.

The second half saw PNG increase the pressure in search of an equaliser, forcing the Solomon Islands defence and goalkeeper Jaron Faiga to work hard to protect the advantage.
Faiga produced a composed performance between the posts as PNG threatened around the Solomon Islands penalty area, while the backline repeatedly cleared the danger.
Solomon Islands were also dealt a setback when captain Patty was withdrawn in the 70th minute, with George Ray coming on as his replacement.

Two minutes later, PNG were reduced to 10 men when centre-back Bomecge Basananuc was shown a red card for unsporting behaviour.
Despite the numerical advantage, Solomon Islands still had to remain disciplined as PNG continued to search for a way back into the match.
The Bonitos survived the late pressure, including a dangerous PNG effort in the closing stages, before holding on for the final whistle and a valuable opening victory.
The result gives Solomon Islands a perfect start to their Group A campaign and early momentum as they continue their bid for a strong finish at the OFC U-19 Championship.
Head coach Franco Ne’e and his young squad will now turn their attention to their next Group A assignment, with the opening win providing an important foundation for the campaign.

SOLOMON Islands face an early test of their OFC U-19 Men’s Championship campaign when they meet a confident Papua New Guinea side in their opening Group A clash in Samoa tomorrow.
The Young Kapuls arrive in Apia with competitive momentum after successfully negotiating the qualifying stage in the Cook Islands, setting up an intriguing Melanesian battle against the Solomon Islands.
Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Media reported that PNG coach Mathew Witu has opted for continuity, retaining the same squad that secured qualification for the championship.

“I have kept the same squad that went to the Cook Islands. Their attitude and preparation have been good and we are looking forward to the tournament,” Witu said.

PNG booked their place in the eight-team championship after finishing top of the qualifying tournament in the Cook Islands. They opened with a 4-0 victory over Tonga before producing a decisive 5-1 win over the hosts to secure qualification.
For the Solomon Islands, tomorrow’s encounter provides the first opportunity to measure their preparations against a side that has already gone through competitive matches this year.
The two sides will be seeking an important opening result before Group A becomes even more demanding, with New Caledonia and hosts Samoa completing the pool.
New Caledonia, who finished runners-up at the previous OFC U-19 Championship, will meet Samoa in the other Group A fixture tomorrow.
Solomon Islands will then face New Caledonia on September 4 before closing their group campaign against hosts Samoa on September 7.
The top two teams from Group A will advance to the semi-finals, where they will join the two qualifiers from Group B.
Defending champions New Zealand are in Group B alongside Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu, with the tournament running in Samoa from September 1 to 14.
While much of the attention will be on the tournament’s ultimate prize, tomorrow’s meeting offers a more immediate challenge for the Solomon Islands — starting strongly against a PNG side that already knows how to win under competitive pressure.
The Young Kapuls have arrived with a settled squad and a recent qualifying campaign behind them.
The Solomon Islands will now look to answer that challenge when the two Melanesian rivals meet in the opening Group A battle tomorrow.

Solomon Islands begin their U-19 campaign tomorrow with two World Cup spots up for grabs

THE Solomon Islands U-19 men’s national team begins its biggest assignment in Samoa tomorrow with a place at next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup firmly in sight.
The young Solomon Warriors face Papua New Guinea in their opening Group A match of the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship, with the tournament offering two tickets to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Media confirmed today that the two finalists of the championship will secure the region’s qualification spots for next year’s global showpiece, putting significant importance on every match in Samoa.
For Solomon Islands head coach Franco Ne’e, the target is clear — qualify for the World Cup.
“We are looking forward to trying to qualify for the World Cup,” Ne’e said.
The coach believes he has assembled a squad capable of competing, with a strong provincial presence complemented by players who already have senior football experience.
“We have a lot of players from the provinces who are representing our country, and we have experienced players who have played senior football back home,” he said.
Ne’e’s side will have to negotiate a difficult Group A campaign, starting with Papua New Guinea tomorrow before meeting New Caledonia on September 4 and hosts Samoa on September 7.
The Solomon Islands-Papua New Guinea clash is scheduled for 11am at the Samoa Football Headquarters.
PNG arrive with confidence after winning the OFC U-19 qualifying tournament in the Cook Islands in June. They defeated Tonga 4-0 and hosts Cook Islands 5-1 to secure their place in the championship.
PNG coach Mathew Witu said he has retained the same squad from the qualifying campaign.
“I have kept the same squad that went to the Cook Islands. Their attitude and preparation have been good and we are looking forward to the tournament,” Witu said.
New Caledonia and Samoa will contest the other Group A match tomorrow, while defending champions New Zealand headline Group B alongside Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, where the race for the two World Cup places will become even more intense.
The championship, which kicks off tomorrow and runs until September 14, is the 25th edition of the OFC U-19 Men’s competition. It was previously staged at U-20 level before being rebranded as the U-19 championship.
For Solomon Islands, however, history and statistics will matter little once the opening whistle sounds tomorrow.
The immediate mission is to start with a positive result against PNG, build momentum through Group A and move one step closer to a World Cup dream.

The Honiara City Darts Association (HCDA) has extended registration for its 2026 league, giving interested clubs and teams an additional week to secure their places in the upcoming season.
HCDA announced the extension, moving the registration deadline from the previously announced August 28 to Friday, September 4, citing strong interest from darts clubs and teams across Honiara.
The association said the extension is intended to give more interested teams time to complete their registration and arrange payment of the applicable fees before the revised deadline.
HCDA also confirmed that the league will now commence on Tuesday, September 15, with teams set to compete across the Premier Division, Division One and Corporate Division.
“Whether you’re competing in the Premier Division, Division 1, or Corporate Division, we look forward to welcoming teams for what promises to be another exciting season of darts,” the association said.
Teams yet to register can collect a registration form from Peli Bottle Shop at Kukum or complete the online registration form provided by HCDA.
The association has also acknowledged clubs and teams that have already completed their registration, saying their support has contributed to the strong momentum building towards the new season.
HCDA has encouraged remaining interested teams to use the extended period to finalise their entries ahead of the new September 4 deadline.
The extension sets the stage for the association to finalise its participating teams before the league gets underway on September 15.

22 players named to lead Solomon Islands’ home campaign

SOLOMON Islands have unveiled their 22-player squad for next month’s OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, with the young side now taking shape ahead of its home campaign.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) announced the squad this afternoon, naming three goalkeepers, seven defenders, seven midfielders and five forwards for the September 6-19 tournament in Honiara.
The goalkeeping options are Andy Tahoa, Deborrah Fangoli and Rose Beui.
Defenders named are Junely Lau, Kate Epale, Johelcy Tohe, Lawdrina Tobani, Safiya Bako, Denika Freemen, Beverly Michael and Mulan Oihanua.
The midfield comprises Anne Bobby, Hilda Kuiseu, Zimran Niu, Jiel Saelea, Angie Ragaruma, Selly Kiriau and Lyneva Wagapu-Tuza, while Claudisha Waokea, Rose Aba, Jacinta Riola, Freda Toro Mau and Janita Ereamimae form the forward line.
Kanto Yamashita, Crystal Bakolo, Phillip Mango, Michelle Pilau, Vanessa Kausimae and Takashi Maeda have been named as team officials.
SIFF described the announcement as a proud moment for women’s football and urged local supporters to turn out behind the young players.
The hosts will open their campaign against defending champions New Zealand at the National Stadium on September 6, before facing Cook Islands and Fiji in Group A.
With the top two finishers earning qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2027 in Morocco, the squad now has its opportunity to turn home advantage into a push for a place on the global stage.
The championship brings together eight teams across two groups, with the tournament concluding on September 19.

Solomon Islands’ national Under-19 men’s football squad has arrived in Samoa ahead of the OFC U-19 Championship 2026, which kicks off next week.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) announced on Wednesday that the 23-player squad and seven officials had been confirmed for the regional tournament.
The 30-member delegation departed Honiara on Wednesday, August 26, for Apia, where the championship will be held from September 1 to 14.
National youth coach and KOSSA youth coach Franco Ne’e will guide the young squad in its campaign.
Solomon Islands have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Samoa, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
Solomon Islands will open their campaign against Papua New Guinea on September 1 at 11am at Samoa Football HQ – Field 1.
They will then face New Caledonia on September 4 before completing their group matches against Samoa on September 7.
The tournament carries added significance, with the top two teams earning qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027 to be hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Defending champions New Zealand are in Group B with Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu.
The OFC U-19 Championship provides the Solomon Islands squad with an opportunity to test themselves against some of the region’s best youth teams and gain valuable international experience.
The squad’s participation also forms part of SIFF’s efforts to develop young players and provide a pathway towards senior international football.

The Rove Rugby 6-Touch Competition Series is set to rise again, with Competition 2 — aptly named RISE — scheduled for September 5 at Townground Rugby Stadium.
Following the completion of the inaugural Competition 1, GENESIS, Rove Rugby has opened registration for new teams, with four of the eight available places already secured.
According to Rove Rugby, the four remaining places are now open to new teams at a registration fee of $700, with interested teams encouraged to contact the organizers directly to secure a spot.
The latest promotional material lists ARO 6-AGAIN, Eagles Rugby, HHH and Rove Panthers among the teams already secured for the second competition.
RISE will be held on Saturday, September 5, at Townground Rugby Stadium, continuing the series after GENESIS provided a full day of six-touch rugby action on August 22.
GENESIS featured eight teams across 24 matches, with ARO 6-AGAIN finishing as the inaugural competition champions.
Rove Rugby later confirmed the final GENESIS standings, with 6-AGAIN first, Frigates second, Eagles third and HHH fourth.
The organizers also acknowledged the support of Solomon Rugby (SIRUF) for allowing the use of Townground Rugby Stadium, while thanking BSP’s Amanda Kori for making rugby balls available for the competition.
Rove Rugby also recognized the participating teams, players, referees, officials, volunteers and spectators whose involvement helped get the new competition series off the ground.
With GENESIS now completed, attention has quickly shifted to RISE, with four places still available for teams looking to join the second chapter of the series.
For Rove Rugby, the progression from GENESIS to RISE marks the continuation of what the organizers describe as a journey built around community rugby, competition and participation.

THE road to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2027 will run through Honiara next month, with the Solomon Islands U-16 women’s side handed a challenging opening assignment against defending champions New Zealand.
The OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2026 will be staged at the National Stadium from September 6-19, with eight of the region’s best young women’s teams battling for the two available Oceania berths at next year’s global tournament in Morocco.
OFC confirmed on Tuesday 25th August that media accreditation is now open for the tournament, which will see hosts Solomon Islands compete in Group A alongside New Zealand, Fiji and Cook Islands.
The young Bonitos will begin their campaign on September 6 at 7pm against New Zealand, before facing Cook Islands on September 9 and Fiji on September 12.
The opening clash against the defending champions is expected to provide an immediate test of the hosts’ credentials, but it also gives Solomon Islands an early opportunity to make a statement on home soil.
The top two teams at the end of the championship will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2027, making every group match crucial for the Solomon Islands side as it seeks to advance to the knockout stage.
Group B features Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea, with the top two sides from each group progressing to the semi-finals on September 16.
The tournament will then conclude with the third-place play-off and final on September 19.
For Solomon Islands, the home tournament represents more than just a regional championship, with a place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup potentially within reach for the young side.
The OFC schedule also confirms Cook Islands’ place in Group A after the nation secured qualification through the regional qualifying tournament earlier this year.
Cook Islands drew 1-1 with Papua New Guinea in their final qualifying match in April after earlier recording a 10-0 win over American Samoa, finishing ahead of PNG on goal difference.
With the tournament now less than two weeks away, attention will increasingly turn to the Solomon Islands squad and preparations for a campaign that could open the door to the biggest stage in women’s youth football.
OFC has meanwhile invited media intending to cover the tournament in Solomon Islands to apply for accreditation, with the championship set to bring regional attention to Honiara from September 6.
