FOOTBALLERS from Guadalcanal Province who are currently involved in any Solomon Islands Football Federation active leagues will not be eligible to play in next month’s Guadalcanal Cup (G-Cup) 2026 in Honiara.
The Guadalcanal Cup Championship 2026 is scheduled to kick off on Monday, 21 September, with team registration now open at a fee of $3,500 per team.
The tournament will bring together teams representing the province’s eight constituencies.
Guadalcanal Football Association Secretary Joshua Kera told SunSPORTS that each team must register 23 players, including three goalkeepers, and five team officials, including a team manager, head coach, assistant coach and other relevant officials.
Kera said players must either be from the Guadalcanal constituency they intend to represent or have lived there for at least the past six months.
“Players currently residing in Honiara or participating in HFA or other PFA competitions will be considered outside the GFA jurisdiction and are not eligible,” Kera said.
“Players from Guadalcanal or other provinces who participated in previous TSL seasons may participate, provided they do not have an active registration with a current S-League club and meet the other eligibility requirements,” he said.
Kera confirmed that each team may register a maximum of five former TSL players, a measure aimed at creating more opportunities for young and emerging players from the eight constituencies.
“Players who are currently registered and participating with clubs in the current S-League season are not eligible to take part in the Guadalcanal Cup Championship 2026.
“Players currently participating in SIFF active competitions, including futsal, are also not eligible, in accordance with the applicable league regulations,” he said.
Kera urges teams to carefully check the eligibility of their players before submitting final registrations.
“Any players or team officials who are suspended or serving a ban imposed by SIFF from previous competitions are not eligible to participate in the G-Cup Championship 2026,” he said.
He also encourages teams to appoint coaches who hold MA Coaching certificates or OFC coaching certificates to manage their sides.
Meanwhile, this year’s tournament will introduce a women’s division, giving female footballers from across Guadalcanal the chance to represent their constituencies and showcase their talent.

BUALA Football Academy (BFA) has received recognition from the Solomon Islands Football Federation, with the national body donating eight soccer balls to support the academy’s grassroots football development programme.
The academy operates under Buala Football Club (BFC), one of the longest-established and most decorated football clubs in Buala, Isabel Province.
Founder, technical director and coach Ataban Sizah thanked SIFF’s youth development officer for acknowledging the work being done to develop young footballers in the province.
Sizah said the recognition follows a recent visit to Honiara by an Isabel sports delegation that included the provincial sports coordinator, the deputy premier and the Isabel Football Association vice-president.
“They highlighted my academy programme, and SIFF decided to support us with eight soccer balls.
“The academy is very thankful for the support. It shows we are on the right pathway in developing players from a very early age.
“We have a strategic plan to start producing quality players for Isabel Frigates and, in the future, the Solomon Islands national teams,” he said.
Sizah said Buala Football Academy looks forward to working with SIFF to achieve its goals of identifying and developing football talent from rural communities.

A NEW futsal competition in Henderson is using the sport not only to bring young people together, but also as a platform for character building, community development and faith.
Established in April this year, the Kaliki Futsal League has already grown to 21 teams, with matches played every Saturday at the organisers’ family property along Bloody Ridge Road.
Kaliki Futsal League chairperson Sharon Hou said the competition was established with a clear purpose of reaching young people through sport.
“Kaliki Futsal League was established earlier this year in April 2026 with the main objective of bringing youths from surrounding communities to know Jesus through futsal,” Hou said.
The league operates on a round-robin format, with a committee led by Hou organising fixtures and managing regular updates through its Facebook page, which serves as the main communication platform.
But beyond competition, Hou believes the league can play a wider role in the lives of participating youths.
She said the competition provides young people from Kaliki and surrounding communities with a space to develop character and a sense of belonging.
“I believe when we create space for our youth to have a sense of belonging they build trust and respect of that space,” Hou said.
She added that this can contribute to the mental and emotional growth of young participants, with wider social and community benefits.
The fledgling competition has also received support from key football stakeholders.
Sports and Leadership Training (SALT) helped kick-start the competition through guidance and a donation of footballs, while the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) has provided technical training.
Hou said SIFF support included a MA Youth Futsal Coaching Workshop in August 2025 and Futsal Referee Courses in March and July this year.
“We are immensely grateful for their support and guidance over the past two years in continuous preparation toward the league,” she said.
The organisers now want to build on that foundation.
Hou said the league plans to run annually, introduce other categories and sports, and provide additional training and workshops for youths.
They also hope to see more churches become involved in sporting programmes while developing players and eventually forming a team to represent Kaliki.
“Our vision is for our youth to come to know God through futsal/sport,” Hou said.
Based in Henderson, the Kaliki Futsal League runs every Saturday and has attracted 21 teams since its establishment in April 2026. Organisers see futsal as more than competition, using sport to create belonging, develop young people and strengthen community connections.

Central Coast FC faces Galaxy FC tomorrow night with historic OFC final spot at stake

Solomon Islands representative Central Coast FC will face Vanuatu’s Galaxy FC tomorrow night in a high-stakes OFC Men’s Champions League semi-final, with a place in Saturday’s grand final at stake.
The two Melanesian sides will meet at 7pm at 4R Stadium Govind Park in Ba, Fiji, with Central Coast chasing a historic first appearance in the continental final.
OFC Media, in a media release issued yesterday, confirmed that defending champions Auckland City FC, hosts Rewa FC, Galaxy FC and Central Coast FC are the four clubs remaining in contention for the 2026 title.
Central Coast advanced to the semi-finals after finishing second in Group A and have grown stronger as the tournament progresses.
Head coach Jacob Moli had earlier admitted that his side was undercooked heading into the competition, but their match fitness has improved and the team has produced some impressive football in Fiji.
Their squad has also been strengthened by eight players with OFC Pro League experience, providing valuable regional experience ahead of the knockout stage.
Standing in their way is a Galaxy side that has impressed throughout the tournament.
The Vanuatu champions topped Group B with three wins, with Brazilian striker Willian Dos Santos Medina emerging as one of the competition’s standout players after scoring three consecutive hat-tricks.
His combination with fellow Brazilian Roberson Dos Santos Ribeiro has helped Galaxy develop one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks.
The semi-final will also carry a strong Solomon Islands connection, with former Solomon Islands international Batram Suri coaching Galaxy, while Solomon Islanders Michael Laulae and Aengari Gagame are also part of the squad.
“It will be special playing against a club from my country. Business is business though, and I coach Galaxy, so I am Vanuatuan now,” Suri said.
Moli, meanwhile, said Central Coast must respect their opponents and prepare carefully for the crucial encounter.
“We respect Galaxy FC. They have been one of the teams to watch at this tournament and impressed during the group stage,” Moli said.
“We have to go back to the training ground and make sure we prepare well for the semi-final.”
Tomorrow’s match will also decide which Melanesian football nation ends a lengthy wait for a place in the final.
OFC Media noted that it has been 12 years since a Vanuatu club last reached the final, while Solomon Islands have waited 17 years since their last club appearance in the decider.
Central Coast previously reached the semi-finals on their OFC Men’s Champions League debut in 2023, but exited at the group stage on home soil last year.
The first semi-final tomorrow sees 13-time champions Auckland City FC take on hosts Rewa FC at 3pm, before Central Coast and Galaxy meet at 7pm.
The two winners will meet in Saturday’s final for the 24th OFC Men’s Champions League title.
Both semi-finals and the final will be available live and free on FIFA+ via DAZN.
The OFC Men’s Champions League is Oceania’s premier club football competition, bringing together the region’s top domestic champions.

Eight constituencies to compete as association tightens player eligibility

The Guadalcanal Football Association (GFA) has moved to strengthen the grassroots focus of its 2026 Guadalcanal Cup Championship, with strict player eligibility rules set to shape the competition when it kicks off next month.
The championship is proposed to begin on September 21 in Honiara, with teams representing Guadalcanal’s eight constituencies expected to take part.
The GFA Executive announced the competition details through an update shared on its official Facebook page, outlining registration requirements and eligibility regulations for players and team officials.
Under the rules, each constituency team must register a squad of 23 players, including three goalkeepers, alongside five team officials.
A key restriction is that each team will be allowed a maximum of five former TSL players, while players currently registered with S-League clubs will not be eligible.
Players currently participating in active SIFF competitions, including futsal, are also excluded under the regulations.
“Players who are currently registered and participating with clubs in the current S-League season are not eligible to participate in the Guadalcanal Cup Championship 2026,” the GFA said.
The association said the restriction on former TSL players is intended to create greater opportunities for young and emerging footballers from the eight constituencies.
Players must also be from, or have resided within the constituency they represent for at least six months. Those currently residing in Honiara or participating in HFA or other provincial football association competitions are considered outside GFA jurisdiction.
The GFA has also ruled out players and team officials serving suspensions or bans from previous SIFF competitions.
Each team must pay a SBD$3,500 registration fee, with the full amount required at least two weeks before the proposed commencement date.
The association is also encouraging teams to appoint coaches holding MA or OFC coaching certificates.
The official venue and further championship details are expected to be announced by GFA in the coming weeks.
The 2026 Guadalcanal Cup will bring together the eight Guadalcanal constituencies in what the association hopes will provide a platform for locally based and emerging players to compete at constituency level.

Rove Rugby has closed team registration for its much-anticipated 6-Touch Competition – GENESIS, with attention now turning to Saturday’s community rugby event.
August 17 was set as the last day for team registration, unless otherwise notified, ahead of Saturday’s opening competition on August 22.
The development follows a series of promotional updates from Rove Rugby as it prepares to stage GENESIS as more than just a rugby competition, with organisers promising a relaxed and family-friendly game-day atmosphere.
In its latest update, Rove Rugby highlighted music, community interaction, an enjoyable atmosphere and exciting finals as some of the features planned for the event.
The initiative is part of Rove Rugby’s broader push to develop six-touch rugby as a community activity, bringing together players and supporters in an environment that combines competition with social interaction.
GENESIS will serve as the first competition in Rove Rugby’s 2026 six-touch series, with the organisation planning to build on the concept through further competitions during the year.
With registration now closed, the focus shifts to the participating teams and the final preparations ahead of Saturday’s event.
The GENESIS competition represents the next step in Rove Rugby’s development of six-touch rugby, following its earlier in-house competition and its move this year to open the concept to the wider community.

Solomon Islands side beats AS Tiga Sport 2-0 to set up semi-final clash with Galaxy FC

CENTRAL Coast FC have booked their place in the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Champions League 2026 after defeating AS Tiga Sport 2-0 in a crucial group-stage match.
The Solomon Islands champions produced a disciplined performance to eliminate the New Caledonian side and set up a semi-final meeting with Group B winners Galaxy FC of Vanuatu.
Central Coast needed only a draw to progress, while AS Tiga had to win to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
The Solomon Islands side started strongly and created several chances inside the opening 10 minutes but failed to find the breakthrough.
That changed in the 15th minute when captain Javin Wae stepped up for a free-kick and curled a low effort into the bottom-right corner to put Central Coast ahead.
The goal settled Central Coast, with Bobby Leslie and Rafa Lea’i continuing to cause problems for the AS Tiga defence with their movement and combination play.
AS Tiga searched for an equaliser but struggled to test Central Coast goalkeeper Erick Wanega.
The New Caledonian side made four substitutions early in the second half as coach Leo Lopez looked for an attacking spark.
Knowing they needed at least two goals, AS Tiga pushed more players forward, leaving spaces for Central Coast to exploit.
Lea’i came close to doubling the lead after racing onto a pass from Leslie, but AS Tiga goalkeeper Thomas Schmidt produced an outstanding save to keep his side in the contest.
Central Coast eventually sealed the victory in the 72nd minute.
Lea’i delivered a dangerous corner towards the back post, where Marlon Tahioa rose highest and headed the ball down into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-0.
The victory sends Central Coast back into the OFC Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2022.
They will now face Galaxy FC of Vanuatu for a place in the final, while AS Tiga Sport’s campaign ends at the group stage.

Makirians living in Ayr and Townsville, North Queensland, Australia, came together on Sunday, August 9, to celebrate the 43rd Second Appointed Day of Makira-Ulawa Province.
The celebration brought together seasonal workers and invited friends for a day of unity, culture, fellowship and remembrance, showing that Makirians continue to maintain their connection to their province despite being far from home.
The program included a range of cultural activities, including face painting, blindfold games and custom storytelling aimed at keeping Makira kastom and traditions alive among the community.
The official program also featured speeches highlighting the significance of the Second Appointed Day, reflecting on Makira-Ulawa Province’s 43 years and sharing aspects of its history.
The celebration concluded with fellowship over shared food and the cutting of a cake to mark the province’s 43rd Second Appointed Day.
In his remarks, community leader Timothy Magusi thanked the leaders, members and friends who attended and supported the celebration.
Mr Magusi highlighted the importance of marking the provincial day for Makirians living abroad and encouraged seasonal workers to be role models while participating in the Seasonal Worker Program.
He said the opportunity to work abroad should be valued because it enables workers to support their families back home and improve their living standards.
“We must value this opportunity because in return our families back home benefit, and it helps improve our standards of living when life demands are high,” Mr Magusi said.
This year’s celebration marked the third time Makira-Ulawa Day has been celebrated by the Makira community in Ayr and Townsville.
The Makira community expressed its appreciation to everyone who attended and supported the celebration, saying the event provided an opportunity to come together as one family and keep their culture and identity alive while living abroad.

Government workers turn to sport to stay active, healthy and connected

Government workers are being encouraged to step away from their desks and take part in sport as the Inter-Ministry Healthy Lifestyle Games continue to promote healthier lifestyles across the public service.
Technical Committee member responsible for volleyball, Andrew Leitaka, said participation in the games has been strong, with workers embracing the opportunity to exercise and socialise with colleagues from other ministries.
“People really look forward to game days. It gets workers away from sitting at their desks all day and encourages regular physical activity,” Leitaka said.
The games, which began on June 12, involves 26 ministries competing across seven sporting codes, with women’s volleyball alone attracting more than 30 teams.
Leitaka said the revival of the games by the Ministry of Health had received positive feedback from government workers, particularly amid growing concerns over non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
“These games encourage government workers to get out of their offices, stay active, and improve their overall health and well-being,” he said.
For Prime Minister’s Office Senior Procurement Officer and volleyball player, Veronica Kealau, the programme provides a welcome break from office work while creating opportunities to build relationships across government.
“We work in the office from the morning until 3:00 PM, and then from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, I come out to play,” Kealau said.
Kealau, who plays both volleyball and netball, said the games allow workers to exercise while strengthening connections with colleagues whose work often overlaps across ministries.
“Beyond the health benefits, it allows us to network with staff from other ministries. Our work is often interconnected, so meeting people on the court builds better working relationships across government departments,” she said.
She said the need for such activities was reinforced by NCD health screenings conducted across ministries earlier this year.
“Sitting at a desk all day creates an unhealthy workforce. A healthy workforce leads to better work outcomes in our offices,” Kealau said.
Despite limited training time and facilities, she said workers remained committed to participating.
“Our goal is to win every match, but if we lose, that’s okay too. As long as we get out here, enjoy ourselves, and take part in the program, we are happy,” she said.
The Inter-Ministry Healthy Lifestyle Games were revived this year after previously being held and later suspended, giving government employees an opportunity to stay active, build workplace relationships and promote healthier lifestyles through sport.

S-League Round 8 set for two double-headers at Lawson Tama Stadium

Football supporters are set for another weekend of domestic action, with four S-League Round 8 matches scheduled to be played at Lawson Tama Stadium tomorrow and Sunday.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) released the Round 8 fixture schedule on its official social media platform, confirming two matches for each day of the weekend.
Saturday’s action will begin with Marist FC facing Sosa FC at 1pm, before Ghupo FC takes on Green Shield FC in the afternoon fixture at 3pm.
The competition continues on Sunday, with Kossa FC meeting Honiara City FC in the opening match at 1pm, followed by Malaita Kingz FC against Southern United FC at 3pm.
All four matches will be staged at Lawson Tama Stadium, with supporters expected to turn out in numbers to back their respective clubs.
The Round 8 programme comes as the S-League campaign continues to build momentum, with clubs looking to strengthen their positions as the competition progresses.
SIFF encourages football fans to come out and cheer for their teams, with the two-day programme offering supporters a full weekend of local football.
The four fixtures are part of Matchweek 5, Round 8 of the 2026 S-League season, with the first two matches scheduled for Saturday, August 15, and the remaining two on Sunday, August 16.

Guadalcanal Cup Kicks-Off September

The stage is being set for the return of the much awaited Guadalcanal Cup Championship, with the 2026 edition scheduled to kick off in September.
The Guadalcanal Football Association (GFA) is preparing for another exciting edition, bringing together teams from the eight constituencies of Guadalcanal.
Official dates, venue, competition format and the registration deadline are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
In a statement released by the GFA, this year’s championship will be particularly significant with the introduction of a Women’s competition, marking the first time female players will compete as part of the Guadalcanal Cup.
"A significant milestone for the 2026 edition is the introduction of a Women's Division, marking an important step forward in promoting gender inclusion and expanding opportunities for female footballers throughout Guadalcanal," the statement reads.
Under this year's competition requirements, all eight constituencies must register both a men’s and women’s team.
Registration is set at SBD $3,500 for the men’s category and SBD $1,500 for the women’s category.
The GFA is appealing to all constituency leaders, football administrators and communities to begin preparations and get their teams ready for the September competition.
"The GFA Executive calls on constituency leaders, football administrators, players, supporters, and communities across Guadalcanal to prepare for what promises to be an exciting and historic championship."
"Together, we can make the Guadalcanal Cup Championship 2026 a successful celebration of football, unity, and provincial pride."
Meanwhile, beyond the competition itself, the Guadalcanal Cup is also expected to play an important role in selecting players for the Guadalcanal Hornets Team, with the 2026 Solomon Cup proposed for December.

Bilikiki's Path to 2027 Beach Soccer World Cup

The Solomon Islands National Beach Soccer Team, Bilikiki, now know their opponents ahead of the 2026 OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup, which will be held in Tahiti from October 22 to 31.
This follows the official competition draw held this week at the OFC Home of Football – Te Kahu o Kiwa in Auckland, New Zealand.
The ninth edition of the competition will feature five nations from across the region, with a place at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2027TM up for grabs.
Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and hosts Tahiti will compete in a round-robin format, with the top two finishers advancing to the grand final and the winner advancing to next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Currently coached by former captain James Naka, Bilikiki will kick off their campaign against Papua New Guinea in the tournament opener on October 22.
Two days later, they will face hosts Tahiti in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2024 final in Honiara.
Bilikiki will then take on New Caledonia in their third match on October 26 before concluding their round-robin fixtures against Vanuatu on October 29.
Meanwhile, the national side has stepped up preparations following the announcement of an extended 20-man training squad earlier this month.
The team continues to train as it works towards the tournament, with the final 12-man squad expected to be announced before the competition.

The Inter-Ministry Healthy Lifestyle Games are continuing, but occasional bad weather is threatening to delay the multi-sport competition beyond its planned November completion.
Women’s volleyball continued yesterday at the Multi-Purpose Outdoor Court, while rain forced the postponement of outdoor soccer and netball. Indoor futsal and volleyball were able to proceed.
Technical Committee member responsible for volleyball, Andrew Leitaka, said weather has become the biggest obstacle to the progress of the games, which began on June 12.
“The games are supposed to finish by November, but every time rain forces cancellations, it delays our timeline. Whether we actually finish by November now depends entirely on the weather,” Leitaka said.
The lengthy programme also reflects the scale of the competition, with 26 ministries participating across seven sporting codes.
Leitaka said women’s volleyball alone has attracted more than 30 teams, with larger ministries registering two teams and smaller ministries one. The teams are divided into four pools, with seven to eight teams in each group.
He said organisers have limited women’s volleyball and netball to six matches per day to prevent clashes and ensure ministries can participate across different sports.
“We want every ministry to be able to participate in every sport,” he said.
Organisers normally schedule six netball matches, six women’s volleyball matches, eight futsal matches and six soccer matches each day. However, official work commitments and weather can force changes, with ministries sometimes unable to attend because of duties, travel or consultations.
Despite the challenges, Leitaka said participation and enthusiasm remain high, with the games encouraging government workers to leave their desks and become physically active.

Solomon Islands side keeps semi-final hopes alive with commanding 3-0 win over AS Venus

Central Coast FC has reignited their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Champions League 2026 after a commanding 3-0 victory over AS Venus of Tahiti in Lautoka yesterday.
The Solomon Islands representative bounced back strongly from Monday’s narrow defeat to defend champions Auckland City FC, producing a dominant first-half display to put themselves in a strong position heading into their final group match.
OFC Media, in its match report yesterday, said Central Coast were determined to respond after their opening loss and did so in impressive fashion, controlling much of the contest and scoring three times inside the opening 24 minutes.
Barrie Limoki opened the scoring in the eighth minute after captain Javin Wae headed down a Rafa Lea’i corner, allowing Limoki to react quickest inside a crowded penalty area and fire home.
Lea’i then doubled the advantage in the 19th minute, finishing calmly after being released through on goal by Prince Tahunipue.
Central Coast struck again just five minutes later when another Lea’i corner was headed down by Wae, with Bobby Leslie turning the ball home from close range to make it 3-0.
The three-goal cushion at half-time gave Central Coast firm control of the match, allowing them to manage the second period while continuing to threaten on the counter.
OFC Media reported that AS Venus struggled to create clear opportunities against a Central Coast side that used its height and aerial strength effectively, with set pieces proving a major weapon for the Solomon Islands outfit.
Lea’i remained a constant threat after the interval and came close to adding a fourth, but twice failed to find the target from promising positions.
The victory now sets up a crucial final group match against New Caledonia’s AS Tiga Sport, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Auckland City FC currently sit on six points, while Central Coast and Tiga Sport will meet in a winner-takes-all encounter for the remaining semi-final spot.
Central Coast’s goal difference could prove decisive, having boosted their tally with yesterday’s three-goal victory.
“Goal difference will be on Central Coast’s side,” OFC Media said, highlighting the significance of the Solomon Islands side’s strong first-half performance.
Central Coast FC will enter their final group fixture knowing that victory will send them through to the semi-finals alongside defending champions Auckland City FC.
The 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League is being staged in Fiji from August 9 to 22, with the tournament bringing together leading clubs from across the Oceania region. Central Coast is representing Solomon Islands in the competition after their domestic and regional campaign earned them a place among Oceania’s top clubs.

Geniagu FC thrash Ghupo Wantoks 6-0 in SWPL Round 17

GENIAGU FC continued their Solrais Women’s Premier League (SWPL) campaign in style yesterday, securing a convincing 6-0 victory over Ghupo Wantoks FC in their Round 17 encounter at East End Stadium.
The afternoon fixture saw Geniagu take control of the match and eventually pull away from Ghupo Wantoks to claim all three points.
Geniagu captain Betty Oriana was pleased with her side’s performance, particularly the way the players followed their game plan and worked together throughout the match.
“I am very proud of the girls today for putting in the hard work and scoring the six goals,” Oriana said after the match.
“We came into this fixture with a clear strategy to control possession and take our chances early. The teamwork and communication out there was good.”
For Ghupo Wantoks, captain Siasia Tangikapia Tepuke admitted that mistakes and a drop in fitness contributed to the heavy defeat.
“In the first half, we tried our best to hold them off, but as the match went on, our fitness levels dropped and communication broke down,” Tepuke said.
“When you make simple mistakes against a quality team like Geniagu, they will punish you. However, I am proud that the girls kept fighting until the final whistle.”
Despite the result, Tepuke said the team will use the defeat as a lesson ahead of its remaining league matches.
“This result is a wake-up call for us to improve our training attendance and build our fitness,” she said.
“We have to stay united, fix our mistakes, and come back stronger in our next match.”
The victory strengthens Geniagu’s position in the upper half of the SWPL standings as the competition enters another important stage.
Before yesterday’s match, Geniagu sat fifth on the 10-team table with 22 points from 13 matches, having recorded seven wins, one draw and five losses.
Ghupo Wantoks, meanwhile, entered the fixture near the bottom of the standings with four points from 12 matches.
The SWPL continues this weekend with another round of fixtures as teams battle for valuable points in the race up the table.

Naha FC topple Frigates United with 3-1 victory to move top of SWPL standings

NAHA FC have moved to the top of the Solrais Women’s Premier League (SWPL) standings after defeating former leaders Frigates United FC 3-1 in their Round 17 clash at East End Stadium yesterday.
The important victory earned Naha all three points and lifted them from 34 to 37 points, moving them above Frigates United, who remain on 34 points after suffering their second defeat of the season.
Frigates United started the contest strongly, finding the opening goal in the first minute to put Naha under early pressure.
However, Naha recovered from the setback and turned the match around to secure a valuable victory over the league leaders.
Naha FC head coach, Lawrence Diau praised his players for maintaining their composure and belief after conceding so early in the match.
“First of all, I want to thank the Almighty above for providing strength, wisdom, and knowledge to my players,” Diau said after the match.
“It was indeed a big game—a clash at the top of the table. I want to praise my girls for the belief they have in themselves, their trust, and their strong desire to work hard.”
Diau said conceding in the opening minute could have affected the team, but his message to the players was to remain focused and continue working towards their game plan.
“Conceding in the first minute is always a challenge, but I just encouraged the girls to refocus, settle down, and keep working,” he said.
“I have prepared my players for such situations. When it happens, we have to step up, and I am very happy the girls stepped up when it was really required.”
The victory also came with contributions from Naha’s two recent Papua New Guinean recruits, attacker Jinny and defensive midfielder Shalom, who joined the squad just days before the important fixture.
Diau said the new additions were brought in to strengthen the squad as the league approaches its final stages.
“My squad is very young, so at this stage of the league, we need a finisher—someone who can dictate play upfront—and that is what Jinny brings to the team,” he said.
“Shalom also put in a solid effort in midfield. Both players fitted in really well, and the rest of the team accepted and supported them to settle in quickly.”
With the victory putting Naha at the top of the standings, Diau said the team must remain focused and avoid being distracted by its latest success.
“It is a very important victory for us because securing these three points puts us right at the top,” he said.
“However, we will not dwell on it. We take the result, keep our heads down, and continue working hard, taking it one game at a time.”
Before yesterday’s fixture, Frigates United and Naha were both sitting on 34 points, with Frigates holding first place on goal difference.
The 3-1 result has now changed the picture at the top, with Naha moving to 37 points while Frigates remain on 34.
The result could prove significant in the title race as Naha now holds the advantage at the summit with the remaining league fixtures becoming increasingly important for both sides.
