The Solrais Women’s Premier League title race will take centre stage at East End Stadium this afternoon when league leaders Frigates United FC face second-placed Naha FC in a crucial top-of-the-table showdown.
The Solrais Women’s Premier League (SWPL) confirmed the midweek fixtures through its official social media platform, with the heavyweight clash scheduled for 4pm at East End Stadium, King George.
The two sides enter the encounter locked together on 34 points, making the match one of the most important fixtures of the current campaign.
Frigates United currently holds the top spot courtesy of their superior goal difference, having scored 89 goals and conceded just five for a +84 goal difference.
Naha, meanwhile, have also recorded 11 wins, one draw and one loss from 13 matches, but sits second after scoring 60 goals and conceding five for a +55 goal difference.
With both teams level on points, Wednesday’s result could have an immediate impact on the race for the championship.
“The game is crucial for both teams, as a win could elevate either side to the top of the standings for the next round,” the SWPL said in its fixture announcement.
The league also urges supporters to turn up for what promises to be a highly competitive encounter, with entry free for spectators.
Before the main attraction, Geniagu United FC will meet Ghupo Wantoks FC at 2pm at the same venue.
Geniagu currently occupies fifth place on 22 points from 13 matches, while Ghupo at ninth place with four points from 12 matches.
Frigates lead
Following Matchweek 13, Frigates and Naha are separated only by goal difference at the top, while Henderson Eels FC remain within touching distance in third place on 31 points.
Henderson have played 13 matches and recorded 10 wins, one draw and two losses, with an impressive +84 goal difference.
Haura FC are fourth on 23 points, followed by Geniagu United on 22, while RSIPF Royals FC and Kolale FC are levelled on 17 points.
At the bottom end, West Honiara FC has five points, Ghupo Wantoks four, and Marist FC one point.
The SWPL said the title race is heating up, with every goal potentially proving important as the leading teams battle for supremacy.
Pegi leads
While the teams fight for points, the individual battle for the golden boot is also gathering momentum.
Henderson Eels striker Ileen Pegi continues to lead the scoring charts with a remarkable 38 goals.
Frigates United’s Keren Kalapai is second with 26 goals, followed by Geniagu United’s Gracester Kini with 25 goals.
Haura FC’s Jeremie Oliver has 15 goals, while Henderson Eels’ Sandy Aniholland completes the top five with 14.
With the title race tightening at the top and the golden-boot battle continuing, Wednesday’s double-header provides another important chapter in the 2026 SWPL season.

Central Coast FC have been left with little room for error in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Champions League 2026 after opening their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Auckland City FC in Fiji.
The Solomon Islands representatives currently sit fourth in Group A with no points, levelled with AS Venus but below the Tahitian side on the table after the opening round of fixtures.
The latest standings released by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) show AS Tiga Sport leading Group A on three points, ahead of Auckland City FC also on three points, while AS Venus and Central Coast occupy third and fourth respectively with no points.
Central Coast’s position reflects Monday’s opening defeat at Churchill Park, where Auckland City came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory. Bobby Leslie scored Central Coast’s only goal of the match, but goals from Gerard Garriga and Ryan De Vries handed the defending champions all three points.
With the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, the result leaves Central Coast needing a strong response in their second group match.
That opportunity comes tomorrow Thursday, August 13, when Central Coast faces AS Venus at Churchill Park at 3pm.
The match has become an important one for the Solomon Islands side, with a victory capable of moving them onto three points and firmly back into the semi-final race.
AS Venus, meanwhile, will also be looking for their first points after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to AS Tiga Sport in their opening fixture.
Central Coast will then conclude their group campaign against AS Tiga Sport on Sunday, August 16, at 3pm at Four R Stadium in Govind Park.
Before that, the other Group A encounter on Thursday will see Tiga Sport meet Auckland City at noon, a result that could have a significant bearing on the race for the top two places.
In Group B, Galaxy FC and Lae City FC have made strong starts, both collecting three points from their opening matches after 4-1 victories over Rewa FC and Tupapa Maraerenga FC respectively.
The group stage will conclude on August 16, with the semi-finals scheduled for August 19 and the final on August 22 in Fiji. The OFC Men’s Champions League is being contested by eight clubs across two groups, with Central Coast representing Solomon Islands in Group A.

Financial constraints see SICF name one Open team for Samarkand campaign

Solomon Islands will field one Open team at the 2026 FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after financial constraints forced the Solomon Islands Chess Federation (SICF) to scale back its original plans for the prestigious international event.
The five-player Team Solomon Chess squad will be led by an internationally experienced coach, with SICF confirming the selection of its players, officials and coaching staff in an announcement on its official social media platform.
Fred Resture, Chris Kaitu’u, Junior Lui and Jowie Temenga have been named in the playing squad, while Melanie Chottu has been selected as the reserve player.
SICF said it had initially planned to send both an Open team and a Women’s team to the Olympiad, but the high cost of international airfares, coupled with the limited number of available female players, made the plan difficult to sustain.
“The Federation made the difficult decision to send one Open Team, including one female reserve player,” the statement said.
The decision means Solomon Islands will still maintain a presence at one of the biggest events on the international chess calendar, with the federation now turning its attention towards preparing the selected players for the Samarkand campaign.
Adding experience to the team is United States-based coach Ke Chen, who has been recommended by FIDE to serve as Team Captain and Coach following the limited preparation period available to SICF.
Chen, known as Coach Kiki, brings more than two decades of experience in competitive chess, coaching, tournament organisation and coach education.
She holds the titles and qualifications of Woman FIDE Master, FIDE Trainer and FIDE Lecturer, while also serving as a tournament organiser, USCF arbiter and national coach. Her peak FIDE rating was 2149.
SICF said her appointment will provide Team Solomon with valuable technical expertise, leadership and international experience ahead of the Olympiad.
The team will be supported by SICF President Simon Chottu as Head of Delegation and Delegate, James Samu as Assistant Captain and Abel Puia as Team Official.
While the four selected players will carry the main playing responsibility in Samarkand, SICF has also retained a wider national squad as part of its longer-term development programme.
The wider male squad includes Leslie Puia, Solly Taesabe, William Kaitu’u, Brandon Tangaibasa, Simister Tangaibasa, James Baiango, Aloysius Shanel and Kelly Sanga, while Fostina Meke remains part of the women’s squad.
The federation said future national selections will consider players’ performance, participation, commitment, availability, character and the requirements of individual tournaments.
“The Federation remains committed to developing both Open and Women’s chess and creating greater opportunities for Solomon Islands players to represent our country internationally,” SICF said.
The 2026 Olympiad will also form part of SICF’s broader objective of establishing Solomon Islands as a consistent participant at regional and international chess events.
The Chess Olympiad is held every two years and brings together national teams from around the world, making the Samarkand event an important opportunity for Solomon Islands players to gain international experience.
With preparations now intensifying, SICF calls on the local chess community, families, supporters and partners to rally behind Team Solomon Chess as the squad prepares for its international assignment.
The Samarkand Olympiad is not only a tournament for the selected players, but another step in SICF’s longer-term effort to build a larger and more competitive national chess pool and create pathways for both established and emerging players.

THE Ministry of Home Affairs is seeking an additional $5 million in supplementary funding for a sports grant to host the Oceania Rugby Sevens tournament.
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry into the 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Bill, Acting Permanent Secretary Daniel Rore confirmed the request. He said the allocation lifts the ministry’s Sports Grant line from $2 million to $7 million, to support the tournament hosted by the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF).
Rore opened his appearance with a public apology to the Committee. He said the ministry had wrongly stated in a submission template that Cabinet had already approved the request through a cabinet paper. He said the cabinet paper was in fact still pending, and yet to be brought to Cabinet.
Dr Paul Bosawai, PAC Chair, clarified that a separate cabinet paper was not required. He said the $5 million was already contained within the full Supplementary Bill submitted for Cabinet endorsement.
Rore said the Ministry’s total 2026 budget stands at $90,504,563. He said about $70.3 million of that, or 78 percent, is sports-related. He said a three-year agreement signed in 2024 committed Solomon Islands to hosting the Oceania Rugby Sevens in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2024 tournament went ahead, but the 2025 edition did not take place.
National Sports Council (NSC) chief executive Alison Burchell said single-sport events such as the Rugby Sevens are typically allocated on an annual or two-yearly cycle by the event owner. She said this differs from multi-sport games such as the Commonwealth or Pacific Games, which have longer lead-in periods.
Peter Shanel Agovaka, MP for Central Guadalcanal, questioned why the ministry’s original request of $2 million had grown to $5 million. He asked whether there had been prior planning for the tournament. Rore said the NSC already holds about $60 million in its existing budget allocation, which is often not fully spent. He said the supplementary request might not strictly have been necessary if that funding could instead be directed to the tournament.
Bosawai asked whether the ministry could instead seek a virement from its already-appropriated 2026 sports budget. Burchell said the NSC has never received its full appropriation from the Ministry of Finance and Treasury. She said the NSC received only 30 to 40 percent of its approved budget last year. She said existing funds are needed to maintain Pacific Games facilities and meet fixed costs such as salaries. Rore confirmed the Sports Grant falls under the recurrent budget, while two other ministry sports projects are funded through the development budget.
Agovaka asked whether the tournament will generate gate revenue. Burchell confirmed gate takings would be collected and managed by the NSC to help offset event costs. She said this would be alongside venue-hire charges for facilities such as the National Stadium, the Aquatic Centre and the SINU gym.
Manasseh Sogavare, MP for East Choiseul and Leader of Opposition, asked for an economic-benefit analysis of the tournament. He also sought clarification on the ministry’s spending plans and audit and reporting obligations for the grant. Rore said the funding will go toward transport, logistics, accommodation, meals, venue hire, publicity and promotions. He said all government due processes will apply, based on the ministry’s experience hosting the tournament in 2024.
The Committee is continuing its examination of the 2026 Supplementary Bill and budget allocations presented by government ministries and agencies.

Green Shield FC rounded off the Super League weekend fixtures with a convincing 3-0 victory over SOSA FC on Sunday.
The result was one of three wins recorded across four matches played over the weekend, with Kossa FC and Marist FC also claiming important victories, while Malaita Kings and Honiara City FC shared the points.
Saturday’s opening match saw Kossa FC edge Laugu United 1-0 in a closely fought contest. Kossa managed to find the only goal of the match and held on to secure all three points.
The second match of the day ended in a 1-1 draw between Malaita Kings and Honiara City FC.
Both sides had to settle for a point each after neither could produce a winner in the second half.
Sunday’s action resumed with Marist FC securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Southern United. Marist held their nerve to claim the three points in another closely contested encounter.
Green Shield then produced the biggest result of the weekend, beating SOSA FC 3-0 in the final match.
The victory provided a strong finish to the weekend fixtures for Green Shield and continues their push as the Super League season progresses.
With the weekend fixtures now completed, attention turns to the upcoming matches as clubs continue their battle for valuable points and a strong position in the competition.

Solomon Islands international Raphael Lea’i has been named ‘Player of the Match’ despite Central Coast FC’s 2-1 defeat to defending champions Auckland City FC in their OFC Men’s Champions League opener on Monday in FIji.
Lea’i produced a determined performance for the Solomon Islands side, playing a key role as Central Coast pushed Auckland City throughout the encounter.
Although Central Coast were unable to secure points from their opening Group A fixture, Lea’i’s individual display stood out as one of the positives from the match.
The forward showed composure, energy and determination against the experienced Auckland City outfit, earning recognition for his efforts in the Central Coast opening match in their campaign in the OFC Champions League.
Central Coast will now turn their attention to their next Group A fixture as they look to bounce back from the narrow defeat and keep their Champions League campaign alive.

Central Coast surrender lead as Auckland City strike twice late to steal 2-1 victory

Central Coast FC suffered a painful late collapse yesterday, surrendering a one-goal lead to defending champions Auckland City FC, who struck twice in two minutes to snatch a 2-1 victory in their opening OFC Men’s Champions’ League Group A match at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Fiji.
The Solomon Islands side appeared on course for a major upset after Bobby Leslie put Central Coast ahead early in the second half following an impressive attacking display against the 13-time Oceania champions.
But their advantage disappeared in the closing stages when Auckland City substitute Gerard Garriga levelled in the 78th minute before another substitute, Ryan De Vries, completed the turnaround two minutes later.
OFC Media reported that the result extended Auckland City’s unbeaten run in the OFC Men’s Champions League to 28 matches, despite Central Coast having the better of the attacking exchanges for long periods.
Central Coast came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, with Solomon Islands international Rafa Lea’i twice missing good opportunities.
Lea’i was first presented with a golden chance after Auckland City defender Nathan Rostron was dispossessed inside his own penalty area, but the forward fired over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
He came close again shortly before the break after being picked out by a well-weighted pass from Hudyn Irodao, only to send another effort over.
Central Coast continued to threaten after the restart and thought they had finally found the breakthrough seven minutes into the second half, only for Lea’i’s effort to be ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 58th minute, with Lea’i again at the centre of the move.
The Solomon Islands attacker burst behind the Auckland City defence before calmly laying the ball across to the advancing Leslie, who made no mistake with a low first-time finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Central Coast’s lead looked increasingly valuable as Auckland City struggled to find a response, but the defending champions raised the pressure as the match entered its final stages.
Their persistence finally paid off when Erick Wanega could only parry Pavel Osmancik’s effort into the path of Garriga, who followed up to score the equaliser in the 78th minute.
Barely two minutes later, Auckland City completed the turnaround.
Michal Doudera created space down the left before delivering a dangerous cross into the area, where De Vries arrived to volley home from close range and leave Central Coast stunned.
The late double condemned Central Coast to a defeat despite a performance that showed they could compete with one of Oceania’s most decorated clubs.
Central Coast FC will now look to recover quickly when they face AS Vénus in their second Group A match on Thursday, with another crucial opportunity to collect points and keep their campaign alive.
Central Coast is making its third appearance in the OFC Men’s Champions League. They reached the semi-finals in 2022 but exited the competition at the group stage last year.

Team Solomon returns home medal-less but determined to strengthen its high-performance pathway ahead of India 2030

TEAM Solomon has returned home from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games without a medal, but the national team believes the experience has provided valuable lessons for the future development of Solomon Islands sport.
The team’s return brings an end to its campaign in Scotland, where Solomon Islands athletes competed against some of the Commonwealth’s leading competitors across their respective sporting disciplines.
In a statement issued through its official social media platform, Iumi Team Solomon said the Glasgow experience had given the country’s athletes valuable exposure to international competition while also highlighting areas that need further improvement.
“Although Team Solomon did not return with a medal, the Games provided invaluable experience competing against some of the world’s best athletes,” the statement said.
For several members of the team, Glasgow also provided an opportunity to test themselves on the Commonwealth stage for the first time, while others produced personal-best performances during their campaigns.
The performances are being viewed as an encouraging indication of progress, despite the absence of a podium finish.
Team Solomon Manager Simon Chottu said the focus must now turn towards building on what was learnt in Glasgow and creating better preparation for future international competitions.
The team has identified athlete development, coaching, access to quality training and increased opportunities for international competition as key areas requiring greater attention.
The lessons from Glasgow are expected to form part of the country’s preparations for the next Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted by India in 2030.
Rather than viewing the Glasgow campaign solely through the medal tally, Team Solomon said the experience should be regarded as an investment in the long-term development of Solomon Islands athletes.
The Commonwealth Games provided the athletes with an opportunity to measure themselves against a higher level of competition and identify areas they need to improve on as they continue their respective sporting careers.
“While medals remain an important goal, the experience gained in Glasgow is an investment in the future of Solomon Islands sport,” Team Solomon said.
Chottu also expressed appreciation to the Government, the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI), National Sports Council (NSC), sponsors, national federations, coaches, officials, families and supporters for their backing throughout the Games.
The manager also thanked the athletes for representing Solomon Islands with “honour”, courage and commitment during their time in Glasgow.
With the 2026 campaign now concluded, Team Solomon’s attention will shift towards building stronger pathways for athletes and improving the level of preparation needed to compete more effectively on the international stage.
The Glasgow experience, Team Solomon said, has laid a foundation for the country’s next phase of preparation as it begins the journey towards the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India.
Team Solomon competed at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, joining athletes from across the Commonwealth in the multi-sport event. The Solomon Islands delegation included athletes competing in different sporting disciplines, with several recording personal-best performances during the Games.

The Government of Japan has reinforced its support for football development in Solomon Islands by donating 50 footballs to the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), with the equipment set to boost grassroots programmes and youth participation across the country.
The donation was made during a ceremony at the SIFF Academy in Honiara on Friday, attended by Japan’s Ambassador to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Keiichi Higuchi, SIFF President Donald Marahare, SIFF Chief Executive Officer Leonard Paia, representatives from the Japanese Embassy, JICA officials and members of the local media.
Ambassador Higuchi said the donation reflects Japan’s commitment to help young Solomon Islanders enjoy football while strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
“We want to support that same focus here in Solomon Islands. We want to help young players grow and bring the joy of football to even more children. These fifty balls add to that vision,” Ambassador Higuchi said.
The Ambassador revealed the donation was inspired by the overwhelming support Solomon Islanders showed towards Japan during the recent FIFA Club World Cup.
“Our Embassy received many phone calls asking for Japanese flags because people wanted to support the Japanese team,” he said.
“Although we did not have any flags to give away, I noticed many handmade Japanese flags displayed on vehicles throughout Honiara. I reported these incidents to Tokyo and soon our state minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Horii, came up with the idea of donating footballs to Solomon Islands.”
He explained that the footballs were donated by the Nara Football Association with the support of Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Horii, following discussions between the governments of Japan and Solomon Islands during Prime Minister Matthew Wale’s recent visit to Japan.
Ambassador Higuchi said Japan’s own football journey had been built on investing heavily in youth development and grassroots football, a pathway his country hopes to encourage in Solomon Islands.
“Through football, our two nations strengthen our friendship. We build mutual ties, and we contribute to the future development of football in both our countries,” he said.
Receiving the donation on behalf of SIFF, President Donald Marahare described the gift as an investment in the future of Solomon Islands football rather than simply sporting equipment.
“This gift is more than equipment. It is indeed an investment in the dreams of our young players, in the growth of our communities and in the future of football in Solomon Islands,” Marahare said.
He said football continues to unite communities while providing opportunities for young people to pursue excellence.
“These soccer balls will be used across our provincial football associations and our grassroots programmes, ensuring that every child—whether in Honiara or in the provinces—has the chance to play, to learn teamwork and to dream of representing our nation on the international stage,” he said.
Marahare assured the Japanese Government that the footballs will be put to good use and thanked the Embassy of Japan for its continued support of football development in Solomon Islands.
Japan has been a longstanding partner in the development of football in Solomon Islands through technical assistance, coaching support and football exchanges.
Japanese midfielder Sota Higashide currently plays for Solomon Kings FC, while JICA volunteer coach Kanto Yamashita is working with SIFF’s women’s youth programme and is involved in grassroots football initiatives.
The latest donation of 50 footballs further strengthens that partnership while supporting SIFF’s ongoing grassroots football development throughout the country.

SIFF youth championship provides young players with a platform to develop and push for national team selection

The Solomon Islands Football Federation’s (SIFF) Youth Championship has provided a valuable platform for young footballers to develop their game while putting themselves in contention for future national team selection.
Academy U15 were crowned champions after defeating KOSSA Yellow 2-0 in the final, with KOSSA finishing runners-up, while Marist U16 secured third place after edging Grassroots Red 1-0 in the play-off.
Speaking at the prize presentation at the SIFF Academy Football Field, SIFF Chief Executive Officer Leonard Paia said the competition was designed to give young players an opportunity to develop and showcase their talent.
“This competition is also part of your development,” Paia said.
“It is not only about participating in this competition, but also about continuing to develop yourselves as players.”
Paia said the tournament was particularly important for players hoping to make the final national youth squads, giving them an opportunity to catch the attention of selectors.
“For those of you who have been selected in the final Under-17 national team, this competition is an opportunity for you to display your talent and convince the selectors that you should be part of the final team for the 2027 World Cup,” he said.
Academy U15 head coach Ian Lagwai Kalu said winning the championship would give his players added confidence as they continue along the national team pathway.
“It means a lot for these boys because they are the ones who will be moving forward for the Under-16 World Cup qualifiers next year,” Kalu said.
“Winning this championship is a massive thing for these boys. It also boosts their morale to work harder and look forward to more competitions.”
For Marist U16 coach Christian Ohasio, consistency was among the biggest lessons his players took from the tournament.
“The big lesson we learned is consistency,” Ohasio said.
“Every game you play, you must be consistent. Training, fitness, endurance and performance, everything is very important.”
Meanwhile, Grassroots Red coach Fred Talo said the tournament had given his relatively inexperienced players valuable exposure against established sides.
“Most of the boys are new to this level,” Talo said.
“I was pleased to see their performance improve and match up with teams that have been together for some time.”
Paia also thanked parents and supporters for their contribution to the development of the young players, stressing that success should not be measured only by trophies.
“Winning prizes is one thing, but having the opportunity to participate and show your talent is another thing,” he said.
“Whether you’re winning a prize or not, everyone, you will be champions and winners because you are part of football development in our country.”
The SIFF Youth Championship was staged at the federation’s Academy Football Field as part of its youth development programme, giving young players competitive experience while providing a pathway towards future national team opportunities.

Japan Donates 50 Footballs to Strengthen Grassroots Football in Solomon Islands
The Government of Japan has donated 50 footballs to the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), reinforcing its commitment to grassroots football development and the longstanding friendship between Japan and Solomon Islands.
The footballs were officially handed over during a ceremony at SIFF headquarters in Honiara, attended by Japan's Ambassador to Solomon Islands, H.E. Keiichi Higuchi, SIFF President Donald Marahare, SIFF Chief Executive Officer Leonard Paia, football officials, members of the diplomatic community and invited guests.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Higuchi said the donation was inspired by the strong support Solomon Islanders showed for Japan during the recent FIFA World Cup, where many local fans proudly backed the Japanese national team.
"Our Embassy received many requests for Japanese flags during the World Cup," Ambassador Higuchi said. "Although we could not meet all those requests, we witnessed countless handmade Japanese flags across Honiara. That passion demonstrated the deep love Solomon Islanders have for football."
The Ambassador said the initiative followed discussions between Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Horii, and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale during the Japan–Solomon Islands Summit on 23 July. The footballs were donated through the Nara Football Association as a gesture of friendship and support for football development in Solomon Islands.
Drawing on Japan's experience, Ambassador Higuchi noted that the country's football achievements have been built through long-term investment in youth development and grassroots programmes.
"We want to help young players grow and bring the joy of football to even more children. These fifty footballs contribute to that vision," he said.
He also highlighted the growing football partnership between the two countries, pointing to Japanese footballer Sota Higashide, who currently plays for Solomon Kings FC, and JICA volunteer coach Kanto Yamashita, who continues to support SIFF's youth and women's football programmes.
Receiving the donation, SIFF officials thanked the Government and people of Japan for their continued support of football in Solomon Islands, saying the equipment will benefit young players and community football initiatives across the country.
The ceremony concluded with the official handover of the footballs and a group photograph involving the Ambassador, SIFF officials and invited guests.
The donation is expected to enhance access to essential football equipment and further strengthen grassroots football development throughout Solomon Islands.

OFC Men's Champions League 2026 kicks
off in Lautoka on Sunday
OFC: The opportunity to lift Oceania's oldest and most prestigious club football prize remains an alluring one for the eight clubs set to compete in Fiji at the OFC Men's Champions League 2026 from this weekend in Ba and Lautoka.
Despite no longer offering qualification to a FIFA competition for the first time since the tournament's inaugural edition in 1987, the OFC Men's Champions League continues to hold significant prestige among the region's amateur clubs.
Thirty-four players with experience in the inaugural OFC Pro League will represent four different clubs at this year's competition, further elevating the standard of play while providing an opportunity for others to stake their claim for a place in one of the eight OFC Pro League squads ahead of the competition's second season in 2027.
4R Govind Park in Ba will host nine matches at the tournament, including both semi-finals and the final, whilst Churchill Park in Lautoka will host the other six matches.
Ahead of the start of the competition at Churchill Park on Sunday, the coaches and captains gathered at the beautiful First Landing Resort at Vuda to give their final thoughts.
Group A
13-time champions and four-time defending champions, Auckland City FC headline Group A. Central Coast FC and AS Vénus will look to challenge them, having bolstered their squads with players with professional experience from the OFC Pro League. New Caledonian representatives AS Tiga Sport start as outsiders but could create an upset.
Central Coast FC
Returning to the OFC Men's Champions League for a third time, Central Coast FC have welcomed nine players from Pro League club Solomon Kings FC into the squad, including Rafa Lea'i, Fordney Junior, Bobby Leslie and Junior David.
"Their return to the club has changed the mood of the club," says head coach Jacob Moli. "They've lifted the standard of training and it's good to have them in the team."
Central Coast's preparations leading into the tournament have been delayed by a late start to the local domestic S-League, but Central Coast have started strongly, winning both of their first two matches.
"We'll give this tournament everything we have and treat every match like a final. That's the attitude we'll carry throughout our campaign." Moli said.
Auckland City FC
Keeping hold of Oceania's oldest club prize remains a coveted opportunity for Auckland City FC, even if winning the competition no longer means qualification for FIFA tournaments. Head coach Rudy Mozr has six Pro League players in his squad, including new signings Fergus Gillion and Matt Foord, who played for Fijian club Bula FC.
Auckland City's build-up to the tournament has been congested with a busy domestic schedule in the New Zealand Northern League.
"The schedule been hard for the boys but we've taken it in a positive way and we've had a really good preparation," says head coach Rudy Mozr. "We've tested ourselves, and we're looking forward to the competition."
Auckland City have only ever lost nine matches at the competition and are on a 27-match unbeaten run dating back to the 2019 semi-finals. Again, they will start as the favorites to defend their title in Fiji.
AS Vénus
Travelling with the youngest squad in the competition, Tahitian club AS Vénus have also been able to call upon such much needed Pro League experience, with seven players having represented Tahiti United.
"I think the players who played in the Pro League will bring their experience to the young players," says captain Roonui Tehau. "For some of our younger players, this is their first taste of a continental tournament."
They are returning to the OFC Men's Champions League for the first time in four years, when they lost to Auckland City FC 3-0 in the final. They'll meet the New Zealand powerhouses again in Lautoka on the first matchday in Group A.
"It won't be easy to get out of the group stage, but we know that we can do it. Our primary objective is to reach the knockout stages."
AS Tiga Sport
The only club in Group A without any Pro League players in the squad, you would be a fool to write AS Tiga Sport out of contention. The New Caledonian club reached the semi-finals last year and will be appearing at the tournament for a third time.
"We know the level will be very high this year," says head coach Léo Lopez. "It will be a real challenge, but we are ready to show the level of New Caledonian football."
Lopez is also the coach of the New Caledonian U-17 national team and has been able to hang onto 12 players from their run to the last four last year, including six senior New Caledonian internationals.
Group B
Host club Rewa FC have assembled a strong squad on home soil and will start as favorites in Group B, whilst Melanesian clubs Galaxy FC and Lae City FC look likely to fight for the second semi-final spot. Qualifying tournament winners Tupapa Maraerenga FC start as tournament underdogs, looking for a first group stage win since 2001.
Lae City FC
Competing in their seventh OFC Men's Champions League, Papua New Guinea's Lae City FC are coached by Valentine Nelson, who himself has played in five of Lae's six previous group stage campaigns at the tournament.
'Transitioning from a player to a coach has given me a new perspective," says head coach Valentine Nelson. "It's good to be back here at this level."
Lae City have the second-youngest squad at the tournament, and a largely inexperienced squad overall, with only three having played at the OFC Men's Champions League before. They are goalkeeper Ronald Warisan, and defenders Phillip Steven and Langarap Samol, all of whom also have senior international caps for Papua New Guinea.
"We're in a group with some very experienced teams and are expecting a challenge from all three teams. We'll be focusing on one match at a time."
Tupapa Maraerenga FC
Winners of OFC Men's Champions League 2026 – Qualifying in Apia six months ago, Tupapa Maraerenga FC will be attempting to win their first group stage match for 25 years. In each of their last four campaigns since, they have finished without a point.
'The past is the past and we're only looking forward at this tournament," says head coach Paavo Mustonen.
Tupapa Maraerenga topped the qualifying tournament with seven points from three fixtures, scoring seven goals and conceding only one.
"Hopefully we can build on that confidence from that qualifying tournament and do well for the club here in Fiji." Mustonen added.
Galaxy FC
One of three teams returning to the competition after four years away, Vanuatu's Galaxy FC have seven players who remain from their last campaign in 2022. They also have seven Vanuatu internationals, including Kensi Tangis and Bong Kalo.
"It's a bit colder, but it's nice to be back here in Fiji," says head coach Batram Suri. "We'll be expecting a tough challenge from Rewa FC in the first match, and their home crowd.
Batram Suri will lead Galaxy at the tournament for a second time, having led them to the quarter-finals in 2020 before the tournament was cancelled by COVID-19. Six years later he is in charge as they attempt to return to the knockout stages.
Rewa FC
Packed with Pro League and international experience, Rewa FC will carry the hopes of host nation Fiji. Their squad is the oldest of the eight competing teams, and features 11 Pro League players, including New Caledonian international Joseph Athale, who has joined Tahiti United teammate Tevita Waranaivalu at the club.
"It's been a huge benefit having some Pro League players in the squad," says captain Setareki Hughes. "We're looking forward to making our friends and family proud here on home soil."
Rewa have only advanced past the group stage once in their previous four campaigns but will be expected to do so with the club they have this time around. Last year they went out at the group stage with just a single point.
'All the teams in this tournament have come in well prepared. We're expecting strong tests from all our group opponents." Waranaivalu said.

Second-half goals secure Academy U15 the SIFF Youth Championship title after a hard-fought final against KOSSA Yellow

Academy Under-15 were crowned champions of the SIFF Youth Championship after defeating KOSSA Yellow 2-0 in a tense grand final at the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Academy Football Field on Thursday afternoon.
Locked at 0-0 at halftime, Academy stepped up their performance after the break, scoring through a well-worked goal before adding a second from the penalty spot to seal the championship.
Speaking to Island Sun Sports after the final, Academy U15 head coach Ian Lagwai Kalu praised his players’ discipline, resilience and commitment throughout the tournament while acknowledging the work of fellow coach Eric, who has been away in Fiji with Central Coast FC at the OFC Men’s Champions League.
“It feels good. First of all, I’d like to give all the glory to Almighty God for giving the boys the strength,” Kalu said.
“The feeling is wonderful. Seeing these boys play and win this championship makes me really proud of their performance.”
Kalu revealed that his side deliberately rotated players during the first half before introducing his regular starting line-up after the interval.
“We wanted to give everyone game time during the first half,” he said.
“In the second half we brought on our starting eleven and simply told them to go out and enjoy the game. If they wanted to win it, they had to go out and do it, and that’s exactly what they did.”
The coach said the opening goal transformed the match and allowed Academy to execute its pressing game more effectively.
“After the first goal the boys started to find their rhythm,” Kalu said.
“We wanted to pressure our opponents, win the ball high up the field and attack quickly. That’s exactly what happened, and eventually we earned the penalty.”
Kalu also commended his young squad for maintaining discipline throughout the competition, saying sportsmanship had been one of the team’s biggest priorities.
“We always remind the boys to stay disciplined and focus on the game,” he said.
“Whatever happens during the match is part of football. They must not retaliate. They have to show good sportsmanship.”
Academy captain George Lea’i described the title as a reward for the team’s hard work and said they are already looking ahead to future competitions.
“It means a lot to me and the team,” Lea’i said.
“We’re looking forward to the next tournament and the next league, and we’ll continue to work hard.”
Reflecting on the final, Lea’i acknowledged KOSSA Yellow’s defensive effort.
“It was difficult because KOSSA defended very well,” he said.
“We stayed patient, kept possession of the ball and saved our energy for the second half.”
The captain dedicated the championship victory to the coaching staff, tournament organisers and his teammates.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to our coaches, the organisers of the tournament and all of my teammates,” Lea’i said.
Kalu believes the championship will play an important role in preparing many of the players for the next stage of Solomon Islands’ youth football pathway.
“Many of these boys will be preparing for next year’s Under-16 World Cup qualifiers,” he said.
“Winning this championship gives them confidence and motivates them to work even harder.”

Minister Maelanga outlines ambitious vision to strengthen sport through provincial facilities, governance reforms and grassroots investment

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen sports development across Solomon Islands, with plans to invest in sports infrastructure in the provinces while pursuing reforms to improve sports governance and administration.
Speaking during his reply to the Speech from the Throne in Parliament this week, Minister for Home Affairs Rev Manasseh Maelanga said sport remains one of the country’s strongest forces for national unity and social development.
“Sports continues to unite our people regardless of province, language or background. It is a fundamental uniting factor for our people,” Mr Maelanga told Parliament.
He said the Government wants to strengthen the country’s sporting framework by reforming the National Sports Council into a stronger institution capable of delivering sports development throughout the country.
“The development of a National Sports within our national culture and the reform of the National Sports Council towards a stronger institutional foundation for sports development across the country, must happen,” he said.
The Minister also stressed that sporting bodies will be expected to meet higher standards of governance and accountability.
“The Government will hold our sporting bodies into account and require a high level of commitment and standards from all sporting bodies,” he said.
Maelanga said the Government’s investment in sport will extend from grassroots participation through to elite athlete development, recognising sport’s wider contribution to youth development, healthier lifestyles, social inclusion and national unity.
He said the Government is determined to create an environment where athletes can excel internationally while becoming positive role models in their communities.
“I am adamant as the Minister responsible for Sport to see our athletes excel and win medals and be successful citizens in our communities,” he said.
To achieve that vision, the Minister said stronger sports administration and improved facilities will be essential, confirming that the Government is seriously considering building sports infrastructure in the provinces in the near future.
“We will be seriously looking into building sports infrastructures in our Provinces in the immediate future,” he said.
Maelanga also confirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs will work closely with national sporting federations, schools, provincial governments and community organisations to strengthen sports governance and create more opportunities for participation throughout Solomon Islands.
The Government’s latest commitment comes as Solomon Islands continues to invest in grassroots programmes while national federations prepare athletes for regional and international competitions, highlighting the growing importance of strengthening sports systems and facilities across the country.

The National Sports Council (NSC) has taken another step to improve workplace safety by recognising staff members who successfully completed a chemical safety training programme to strengthen safety practices across the country’s sporting venues.
According to information released through the NSC’s official media platform, 15 staff members received certificates on Thursday after completing the Chemical Safety Training Programme conducted by MYK Suppliers.
The recipients who are cleaners, venue managers and administration staff underwent the training on July 3.
From the training, they gained practical knowledge on how to safely handle, store and use workplace chemicals used to maintain NSC facilities.
While the programme focused on chemical safety, the broader objective was to reduce workplace risks and create a safer environment for staff, athletes, officials and members of the public who regularly use the council’s sporting venues.
Presenting the certificates, NSC Chief Executive Officer Alison Burchell congratulated the participants and encouraged them to apply what they had learned in their daily responsibilities.
“Chemical safety is an essential part of maintaining a safe working environment,” Burchell said.
She urged staff to continue practising safe handling procedures to help protect themselves, their colleagues and everyone who uses NSC facilities.
The training also highlighted the importance of professional development within the organisation, with the council continuing to invest in programmes that improve workplace standards alongside the delivery of sporting services.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Rose Sala Olea said the training strengthened staff confidence and provided practical skills that will improve their work.
“The training has given us a much better understanding of how to use cleaning chemicals safely and correctly,” Olea said.
“It has increased our confidence and will help us carry out our work more safely while protecting ourselves, our colleagues and the facilities we look after.”
NSC also acknowledged MYK Suppliers for delivering the programme and for supporting the council’s efforts to improve workplace health and safety through practical training initiatives.
Although they often work behind the scenes, cleaners, venue managers and administrative staff play an important role to ensure national sporting venues remain safe, clean and operational for competitions, training sessions and community events throughout the year.
The Chemical Safety Training Programme was conducted on July 3 by MYK Suppliers. Fifteen NSC staff members successfully completed the course before receiving their certificates on Thursday, with the initiative forming part of the council’s ongoing commitment to workplace safety and staff development.

Fans can follow every OFC Men’s Champions League match on FIFA+ through DAZN as Central Coast FC prepares for Fiji campaign

Football fans across the Solomon Islands and the Pacific will be able to watch every match of the 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League live and free when the competition kicks off in Fiji this weekend.
According to an Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) media release issued yesterday, all matches will be streamed live on FIFA+ through the DAZN platform, allowing supporters around the world to follow every game featuring Oceania’s top eight clubs.
“The 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League will be streamed live and free on FIFA+, delivered through the DAZN platform, giving fans around the world access to every match in the competition live from Fiji,” the statement said.
Supporters can access the live coverage by signing into DAZN using a FIFA ID. Those without a FIFA ID can create one during the sign-in process before selecting the FIFA+ section to access the OFC Men’s Champions League matches.
The tournament brings together eight champion clubs from across the region, including Solomon Islands representatives Central Coast FC, alongside Auckland City FC of New Zealand, AS Vénus of Tahiti, AS Tiga Sport of New Caledonia, Lae City FC of Papua New Guinea, Tupapa Maraerenga FC of the Cook Islands, Galaxy FC of Vanuatu and hosts Rewa FC of Fiji.
OFC also confirmed that DAZN can be accessed on smart televisions, mobile phones, tablets, computers and gaming consoles, enabling supporters to watch matches from almost anywhere.
In addition to the live broadcasts, football fans can keep up with team line-ups, match reports, results and exclusive tournament content through the OFC website and its official social media platforms.
The 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League runs from August 9-22 in Fiji, with the group stage beginning this Sunday before the competition moves into the semi-finals on August 19 and the final on August 22. Central Coast FC will be aiming to make a strong impression as Solomon Islands’ representative in Oceania’s premier club football competition.

The Solomon Islands Chess Federation (SICF) has officially wrapped up its International Chess Day 2026 Online Creative Chess Challenge, announcing three winning entries following a successful two-week campaign that showcased the many unique places where Solomon Islanders enjoy the game.
According to information shared on the federation’s official social media platform, the challenge officially closed on July 31 after attracting 26 creative entries from participants across the country.
The federation said its Executive Committee assessed submissions based on creativity, public engagement through likes and shares, and the competition criteria before selecting the winners.
“Our International Chess Day 2026 Online Creative Chess Challenge officially closed on 31 July 2026.
“A huge thank you to everyone who participated! We received 26 creative entries, and we truly appreciate the time, effort, and passion each of you put into showcasing where you play chess,” the statement said.
Following the judging process, SICF announced Hauksyy as the winner of the Most Likes and Shares category for Entry No. 16, featuring a chess setup at Water Fall in Kongulai with the caption, “Outdoor checkmates only.”
James Baiango claimed the Most Creative Video award with Entry No. 8, filmed in Tavio under the theme “Chess for Growth.”
The Most Creative Image category was won jointly by Mikey Pagge and Kevin Snik for Entry No. 12, which captured a nighttime chess match in Upper Ruka, Kongulai Jungle, also carrying the caption “Chess for Growth.”
The federation congratulated the winners and confirmed they will soon be contacted to arrange the presentation of their cash prizes.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated. We truly enjoyed seeing the many unique places where chess is played across the Solomon Islands,” the federation said.
The federation also encouraged players and supporters to stay connected for more activities, adding, “Stay tuned for more exciting challenges, tournaments and events from the Solomon Islands Chess Federation.”
The online challenge formed part of SICF’s celebration of International Chess Day and ran from July 15 to July 31 under the theme “Show Us Where You Play.” Participants were invited to creatively capture themselves playing chess in different locations across the country, helping promote the game while highlighting its growing reach beyond conventional playing venues.
The competition follows a busy period for the federation, which has continued to expand chess participation through tournaments, school programmes and community initiatives in Solomon Islands.

Chung Wah School has launched a community fundraising campaign to support its Under-12 boys futsal team’s journey to Brisbane, Australia, where the young side will represent Solomon Islands at the 2026 National School Titles.
According to information shared on Chung Wah School’s official social media platform, the school is inviting supporters, businesses and the wider community to attend a Corporate Dinner Fundraiser to help raise funds for the team’s overseas campaign.
“Our Under 12 Futsal Team has earned the incredible opportunity to represent the Solomon Islands at the National School Titles 2026 in Brisbane, Australia,” the school said.
The school described the opportunity as more than just a sporting competition, saying it will allow the young players to showcase their talent, gain valuable experience and proudly represent both their school and the country on the international stage.
“This is more than a competition—it’s a chance for our young athletes to showcase their talent, build lifelong memories, and proudly represent our school and our nation on the international stage,” the statement said.
The fundraising dinner will be held on Saturday, August 15, at the KG Sports Dining Hall from 6pm to 10pm. Tables are available for SBD$5,000, accommodating up to 10 people, while raffle tickets will also be on sale during the evening.
Guests will be treated to local food, pork and barbecue, alongside live band entertainment, tamure and cultural dance performances as organisers seek to rally community support behind the team’s campaign.
“Every ticket purchased, every sponsorship, and every donation brings our team one step closer to Brisbane,” the school said.
The National School Titles 2026 will be held from September 28 to October 1 at the Mt Warren Sports and Fitness Centre in Brisbane. The team is scheduled to depart Solomon Islands on September 23 before returning on October 3.
The school concluded by encouraging the community to unite behind the young players, saying every contribution will help make the journey possible as they prepare to represent Solomon Islands on the international futsal stage.

Green Shield, Southern United Set for Unbeaten SIFF Super League Showdown
An unbeaten clash between Green Shield FC and Southern United FC will headline today's SIFF Super League Round Six fixtures, with both sides aiming to seize early control of the competition.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) has identified the encounter as the feature match of the midweek schedule, with both clubs entering the contest after winning their opening two matches of the season.
"The SIFF Super League is back with exciting midweek matches, and there is one match you cannot miss," the federation said ahead of the fixture.
SIFF noted that both teams have enjoyed perfect starts to their campaigns, setting up an intriguing battle for top spot.
"Both teams are undefeated and have won their first two matches. It's a fight for the top spot. Who will make a mistake first? Will Green Shield's defence hold up, or will Southern United's attack be too strong?" SIFF said.
The highly anticipated match is scheduled to kick off at 3pm today at Lawson Tama Stadium and is expected to be one of the most competitive fixtures of the round.
Round Six action begins at 1pm with Marist FC taking on Honiara City FC, before Green Shield and Southern United meet in the day's feature match at the same venue.
SIFF has encouraged football fans to attend and support their teams, with admission priced at $20 for the grandstand and $10 for the hillside.
The Round Six fixtures come at a crucial stage of the season as clubs seek to build momentum and secure valuable points in the race for the league title.
