The Strongim Bisnis program, in partnership with the Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI), is providing new opportunities for registered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the agriculture and tourism sectors through its Business Transport Assets Financing Facility.
The initiative was highlighted during an information session held at the Youth Hub in Chinatown, Honiara, where business owners learned about a co-financing arrangement designed to help them acquire vehicles and boats to strengthen their operations.
Under the partnership, Strongim Bisnis will contribute 40 percent grant funding, DBSI will provide a 30 percent loan, and participating businesses will contribute the remaining 30 percent.
Strongim Bisnis Partnership Manager for the Cash Crops Sector, Yolarose Houaoli, said the facility aims to improve access to transport assets, helping businesses expand their reach, connect rural producers to markets, and serve more customers.
She said the initiative will reduce the financial burden on businesses seeking to purchase essential transport assets while supporting growth and productivity across the agriculture and tourism sectors.
The program is expected to create broader economic opportunities, particularly in rural and underserved communities, by improving market access and strengthening business operations.
Eligible applicants must be legally registered businesses operating in Solomon Islands for at least three years and actively engaged in agriculture or tourism. Agricultural businesses may include those involved in coconut, cocoa and seaweed production, while tourism operators must be registered with Tourism Solomons.
The co-financing facility represents another important step toward supporting local enterprise growth, enhancing economic resilience, and promoting sustainable development across Solomon Islands.

Real Borders FC uses grassroots sport to promote youth development and positive community values

Real Borders FC is looking beyond the futsal court, using grassroots sport as a platform to bring young people together, promote discipline and encourage positive choices among communities around Borderline in Honiara.
The club, which originated from Mamulele Adventist Youth in 2025, aims to provide a welcoming environment where young people can develop their sporting talents while building friendships, teamwork and respect for others.
Real Borders FC coordinator Alwyn Maesulia said the club’s mission is captured in its slogan, Kicking Crime, Creating Champions, Making Disciples.”
Maesulia said the club believes sport can give young people a positive way to use their time while helping them develop healthy friendships and constructive habits.
“Through regular training and club activities, we want to encourage young people to make positive choices and stay engaged in something constructive,” he said.
He said the club also wants to ensure that young people from different backgrounds feel welcomed, supported and motivated to contribute positively to their communities.
Initially established as a church youth initiative, Real Borders FC has since expanded its reach to welcome young people from the wider Borderline area and surrounding communities, including Gilbert Camp, Farm, Dukwasi, Kobito and Mt Austin.
Maesulia explained that the club’s activities had slowed for a period after some members travelled overseas for further studies, while others attended schools in the provinces or took on other commitments.
However, the initiative was revived in 2026 with new members joining some from the original group.
The club now welcomes beginners as well as players with existing futsal experience, particularly boys and young men willing to learn, respect others and participate positively.
Its regular Sunday training sessions run from 6.30am to 9.30am at the SDA Kukum Slab, providing participants with opportunities to improve their fitness, skills, confidence and teamwork.
The club is also planning to introduce an additional weekday training session at the Multipurpose Hall, although Maesulia said financial constraints means the arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
Beyond training and competition, Real Borders FC hopes to create opportunities for young people to develop leadership and other positive values while building their sporting abilities.
The club is currently running its own four-team Real Borders League 2026, involving Blue, Green, Red and Black, which provides players with opportunities to gain match experience and develop their teamwork.
Maesulia said the club’s long-term vision extends beyond winning matches, with an emphasis on helping young people become positive role models in their communities.
Real Borders FC’s community-focused approach reflects its ambition to use futsal not only as a competitive sport but also as a means to encourage personal development and stronger community relationships.

The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) has established a Credit Reporting System (CRS) through the Credit and Data Bureau Solomon Islands (CDBSI) in accordance with the Credit Reporting Regulations.
A statement from CBSI said the purpose of the Credit Reporting System is to i mprove access to credit and other financial services, support faster and more informed lending decisions, encourage responsible borrowing and repayment behavior and enable customers with good repayment records to build a positive credit history.
It will also help reduce lending risks and strengthen confidence in the financial system and promote financial inclusion and economic development in Solomon Islands.
CBSI said by sharing accurate credit information, financial institutions can better assess credit applications and provide services that are tailored to customers’ financial circumstances.
The statement said that as part of the implementation of the Credit Reporting System, participating financial institutions and authorised credit information providers will upload existing customer credit information to the Credit and Data Bureau Solomon Islands for the purpose of establishing the initial credit reporting database.
The information uploaded may include credit-related information already held by these institutions, including loan account details, repayment history, and other information permitted under the Credit Reporting Regulations.
The statement said that pursuant to Regulation 11(5) of the Credit Reporting Regulations, consumer consent is not required for the initial submission of existing customer credit information for the sole purpose of establishing the initial Credit Reporting System database.
Regulation 11(5) requires that consumers be notified that their information is being uploaded to the Credit Reporting System. This public notice is provided to ensure that customers are informed of this process.
CBSI said that while consent is not required for the initial upload of existing information, consumer consent will be required for any subsequent submission of additional credit information after the initial upload, as required under the Credit Reporting Regulations.
Accordingly, the Bank will obtain the necessary customer consent before providing any additional credit information to the Credit & Data Bureau Solomon Islands after the establishment of the initial database.
“CBSI remains committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of consumer credit information. All credit information must be collected, used, shared, and stored in accordance with the Credit Reporting Regulations and other applicable legal requirements,” the statement said.

Gizo
A COUPLE has been arrested by Gizo Police in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Western Province.
The victim, who was the biological sister of the female suspect, was allegedly living with her sister and brother-in-law when the incident occurred in 2024.
According to reports, the female suspect allegedly played a role in the rape by forcing and restraining her younger sister and removing her clothes to allow her husband to sexually assault the victim.
It was alleged that the victim reportedly sustained severe internal injuries to her private parts and was admitted to Gizo Hospital before being referred to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara for further treatment.
Sadly, the girl died from her injuries this year.
The matter was subsequently reported to Gizo Police by family members and relatives after the victim’s death.
Police investigations later led to the arrest of the couple, who were allegedly attempting to evade justice by fleeing to Guadalcanal Province.
Staff-in-charge of the Gizo Provincial Crime Investigation Division, Inspector Leonard Rokoto, confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were apprehended last week at Lambi in Guadalcanal Province.
He said the suspects were brought back to Gizo to face further investigations.
Rokoto said charges were laid against the suspects with assistance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Gizo.
He said the male suspect has been charged with persistent rape and murder, while the female suspect faces charges of compelling rape and murder.
Rokoto said both suspects appeared before the Western District Magistrates’ Court this week and were remanded at Gizo Correctional Facility.
He said the operation was coordinated by the Gizo Police Crime Investigation Division, with support from the Head of Department, Provincial Police Commander, Operations, and police officers in Honiara.
Rokoto described the arrests as a significant achievement for Gizo Police and a demonstration of the commitment of officers carrying out their duties.
He explained that the case was being handled in Western Province because the suspects were from the province and should be dealt with by Gizo Police.
Rokoto said handling the case locally will also help strengthen confidence and trust between police and communities.
He condemned the alleged crime and warned that police will take cases involving serious sexual offences and violence against children seriously.
The case is now before the court.

Officers from the Honiara City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Division have intervened to stop the illegal selling of fish in front of the Mbokolo building near the Mataniko bridge earlier this week.
Director of the HCC Law Enforcement Division, Mr. Robert Madeo, confirmed to Island Sun today that officers were deployed to the site after receiving reports of vendors selling salt fish bonito in the area.
According to Mr. Madeo, the initial enforcement action took place on Monday this week. While officers successfully cleared the site on Monday, vendors returned to the area the following day.
“After removing them on that day, they continued on the next day, that is Tuesday, so from there our team go again and remove them from the site,” Mr. Madeo said.
The Director said that most of the individuals involved are vendors who typically sell salt fish bonito at the Honiara Central Market.
He emphasised that the Mataniko bridge area is entirely unsuitable for vending, particularly regarding public health and food safety standards.
“They should go and sell at the White River fish market. That is the right place. That is the advice we told them,” Mr. Madeo said.
He urges the public to act responsibly and restrict commercial trading to designated city markets.
Mr. Madeo warned that persistent non-compliance will result in penalties under the HCC Hawking Ordinance, with the council’s Health Division also prepared to step in to monitor food handling.
“I call on our good people to comply with the City’s ordinance for the safety of everyone, because this is food that people are dealing with,” he said.
He urges vendors to utilise legitimate venues and refrain from illegal street sales.

A comprehensive three-week capacity and skills training program for the Honiara City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Division officers is scheduled to wrap up next week.
HCC Law Enforcement Division Director Robert Madeo confirmed today that the initiative will officially conclude on Thursday, 22 October 2026.
The program, which commenced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, focuses on strengthening the officers’ professional knowledge, tactical skills, and operational capability to execute lawful and effective enforcement across the capital city.
The security training is being facilitated by the China Police Liaison Team (CPLT) of the People’s Republic of China, marking an ongoing partnership in local security development.
Speaking to Island Sun today, Mr. Madeo explained that the final cohort of officers is currently undergoing the training.
The sessions have been held at the Multi-Purpose Hall Conference Room following a strict three-group rollout schedule:
• Group 1: 6–8 October 2026
• Group 2: 13–15 October 2026 (Concluding today)
• Group 3: 20–22 October 2026 (Commencing next week)
Mr. Madeo emphasised that the fundamental goal of the initiative is to support HCC law enforcement officers in their daily field duties.
“This training will directly help our officers guarantee public safety while maintaining high professional standards within the city boundaries,” Madeo said.
He added that building a solid foundation of basic law enforcement knowledge is essential to uphold peace and order in Honiara.
The Director expressed his gratitude to the China Police Liaison Team for providing the opportunity and leading the vital sessions.
“By the conclusion of the program next week, the upskilled HCC law enforcement cohort is expected to provide Honiara residents with a more secure, orderly, and safely managed urban environment,” Madeo said.

The Solrice Company Limited has reinforced its commitment to community sports development and student welfare by donating 30 bags of rice to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026.
According to a statement from SINU today, the handover ceremony took place ahead of the league’s official launch, with Solrice Company Limited General Manager Mr Bradley Forde and accompanying company staff presenting the contribution on-site.
Mr Samson Bisafo, SINU Acting Campus Life, Welfare and Sports Manager, warmly received the donation alongside members of the SINU team.
The University expressed its profound gratitude for the private sector partnership.
“SINU extends its sincere appreciation to Solrice Company Limited for its generous donation and valuable support towards the successful delivery of the Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026,” the statement said.
The University highlighted that the generous contribution will be vital to support the seven-week tournament.
“The league is designed to bring students and community participants together to foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition across the campus,” SINU said.

THE Ministry of Home Affairs is conducting consultations on the proposed National Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Policy that aims to guide and regulate the operations of NGOs and civil society organisations in Solomon Islands.
The consultation in Gizo, Western Province, brought together representatives from the provincial government, church organisations, community leaders and other stakeholders to share their views on the proposed policy.
Director of the Civil Affairs Division within the Ministry of Home Affairs, William Misibini, told Island Sun that an NGO Task Force comprising representatives from different government ministries is in Gizo to seek public opinions on the policy.
He said the consultation aims to develop a national framework that will guide and safeguard the operations of NGOs, civil society organisations (CSOs) and other civil society groups in the country.
“At the moment, we don’t have such a policy, so currently, it is like the government and NGOs are walking on different paths.
“So, this policy will help the government and NGOs to work hand in hand to move this country forward,” Misibini said.
He said the proposed policy will also form part of the process towards establishing legislation to govern the NGO sector in Solomon Islands.
Misibini explained that consultations will be conducted in provinces where a significant number of NGOs, community-based associations and church-based organisations are registered and operating.
He said Western Province was selected as the first province for the consultation because of the large number of NGOs operating in the province.
“Following the Gizo consultation, the task force is expected to continue consultations in Malaita Province and Honiara to gather further views from stakeholders,” Misibini said.
He said the consultation process is important to ensure that the proposed policy reflects the views and experiences of organisations working at the community level.
Misibini said the proposed policy will be submitted to the government for further deliberations before being vetted by the Office of the Attorney-General once the consultations are completed.
The policy is expected to provide a foundation to strengthen cooperation between the government and NGOs, while establishing a clearer framework for the sector’s operations in Solomon Islands.

The Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI) and South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) have strengthened their partnership with the launch of a $5 million loan facility that aims to empower women entrepreneurs across Solomon Islands.
The loan facility was officially launched at the DBSI office in Honiara today, with the formal handover of a $5 million cheque to SPBD to expand microfinance opportunities for women, particularly those in rural communities.
Speaking at the launch, DBSI Chief Executive Officer, Mr Aisake Radu, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, highlighting SPBD’s growth and its increasing impact on women entrepreneurs.
Mr Radu said the number of women assisted by SPBD had increased from 2,046 in 2024 to 2,557 by the end of 2025.
He also highlighted an increase in the organisation’s reported net profit from $2.3 million to $3.9 million, while its loan portfolio grew from $9.4 million to $11.5 million over the same period.
“These are positive outcomes of our relationship. We are very happy with the growth of SPBD and the success it has achieved. Its success is also our success, and we are pleased to see this partnership continue to grow,” Mr Radu said.
He described the relationship as a genuine partnership that is producing positive results through increased support for women and small business development.
Meanwhile, SPBD Director, Mr Gregory Francis Casagrande, welcomed the new financing, describing it as a major step forward in the organisation’s efforts to empower women through microloans and small business training.
Mr Casagrande said SPBD provides small loans and business training to help women establish and expand income-generating activities, improve their family living conditions and support their children’s education.
He said the new $5 million financing will enable SPBD to reach an additional 1,250 women micro-entrepreneurs across Solomon Islands.
“We are particularly proud of our relationship with DBSI. This new financing will help us reach more women across the provinces,” Mr Casagrande said.
The initiative is expected to create more opportunities for rural women to access finance, develop small businesses and improve their household incomes.
Through the partnership, DBSI and SPBD aim to strengthen women’s economic participation while supporting grassroots entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development across the country.

The National Parliament of Solomon Islands is in deep mourning following the sudden passing of Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament for South New Georgia, Rendova, and Tetepare, Mr. David Gina.
Mr Gina passed away today at the National Referral Hospital.
In an official statement released today, Speaker of Parliament Mr. Patteson John Oti speaking on behalf of all members and staff of the National Parliament, expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the late leader’s wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and constituents.
“The passing of the late David Gina is a great loss to the National Parliament and the people of Solomon Islands,” Oti said.
Oti said late Gina served the House in a position of significant responsibility, supporting the Speaker in the conduct of parliamentary proceedings and upholding the procedures and traditions of Parliament.
The Speaker highlighted Mr Gina’s extensive public service career, which spanned both provincial and national leadership levels.
“Prior to entering national politics, he served as Premier of the Western Provincial Government and held ministerial responsibilities as Minister for Rural Development,” Oti said.
Late Gina was elected to the 12th Parliament following the 2024 National General Election, where he carried the mandate of representing the people of South New Georgia, Rendova, and Tetepare.
“His contribution to parliamentary service and public leadership will be remembered with respect and appreciation,” Oti said.
Oti also encouraged grieving family members, colleagues, and constituents to draw strength from the lasting memories of his life and service.
The National Parliament has offered its continued thoughts and prayers for comfort and strength to the family and the people of his constituency during this difficult period of bereavement.

A representative of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands has successfully completed a three-week Seminar on Public Affairs Capacity Building for Solomon Islands in the People’s Republic of China, enhancing his knowledge and understanding of public administration, governance, leadership and institutional development.
Mr. George Hagety, Human Resource Support Officer at the National Parliament, participated in the seminar held in Fuzhou, China. The programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and organised by the International Economic Cooperation Center of Fujian Province.
The seminar brought together participants from Solomon Islands for professional learning and international engagement, focusing on public affairs, leadership, governance and institutional capacity development.
Mr. Hagety’s participation provided an opportunity to broaden his professional perspective, exchange experiences with fellow participants and gain valuable insights into public administration practices that could contribute to strengthening the administrative functions and effectiveness of the National Parliament.
Reflecting on the programme, Mr. Hagety highlighted the importance of continuous professional development in building the capacity of public institutions.
“The seminar was a valuable learning experience that broadened my understanding of public affairs, governance, leadership and institutional development. The knowledge and experiences gained will contribute positively to my professional responsibilities and support the ongoing efforts of the National Parliament to strengthen its administrative capacity and effectiveness,” he said.

He acknowledged the value of international training opportunities in equipping public officers with relevant knowledge and skills to fulfil their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the development of Solomon Islands.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is urging women across Solomon Islands to come forward for breast cancer screening. Acting Permanent Secretary of Health, Dr Gregory Jilini, said breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Solomon Islands, with about 128 women diagnosed and 47 deaths recorded each year.
Speaking during the launch of a breast cancer awareness campaign at the National Referral Hospital (NRH), Dr Jilini said early detection was critical because breast cancer is more treatable when identified at an early stage. He said the number of new breast cancer patients requiring chemotherapy at NRH increased from 39 in 2019 to 99 in 2022, highlighting the growing need for awareness and early screening. Despite the availability of mammography equipment and trained radiographers, screening participation remains low.

Dr Jilini revealed that NRH conducted only 190 mammograms between January and June 2026, averaging about 32 screenings a month in a country with a population of more than 700,000. He said many women had never undergone mammogram screening, while fear, stigma, cost and the reluctance to attend appointments alone were among the barriers preventing women from accessing the service. “When screening is routine, as in Australia, more than nine in 10 women with breast cancer survive five years.
Early detection is the difference,” he said. Dr Jilini said the campaign aims to encourage more women to get screened, raise awareness and promote community support for early detection. He called on families, churches and employers to encourage women to make time for screening, adding that women could also support one another by attending appointments together. “Don’t wait for symptoms, bring a sister, bring a friend and every woman in a pink shirt becomes an advocate,” he said.
The campaign is locally led, with mammograms conducted during the initiative being counted and results scheduled to be shared on World Radiology Day on November 8. Dr Jilini said the campaign could be repeated every October if successful, with the approach potentially extended to other health concerns, including cervical cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
He also urged women who have breast lumps or other concerns not to wait for the campaign but to seek medical attention immediately. “We have the machine, the skills and a team ready to welcome you. What we need now is you. Get screened and bring a sister,” he said.

Australia has handed over 19 community infrastructure projects funded under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement Project Phase Two (CAUSE II) to communities in Gizo and Noro.
A statement from Australia High Commission (AHC) today said the newly completed infrastructure include solar LED streetlights, footpaths, a Jacob’s Ladder, a lower landing deck, and upgrades to Noro market facilities.
AHC said the practical projects are improving access to safer, more climate-resilient infrastructure and services, while creating local employment and skills development opportunities, with a particular focus on women and young people.
Representatives from the Australian High Commission joined Western Provincial Government Minister of Works Mr Freedom Tozaka, Memberof Parliament for Gizo and Kolombangara, Mr. Jimson Tanangada, World Bank officials, and government stakeholders to celebrate the milestone.
Minister Tozaka praised the joint backing from Australia and the World Bank, in delivering the projects through CAUSE II, describing them as an investment in the people and communities of Western Province.
“Infrastructure development remains one of the key priorities of the Western Provincial Government. We recognise that quality infrastructure is essential for improving access to services, supporting economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and building stronger and more resilient communities.” Minister Tozaka said.
AHC said alongside these community projects, CAUSE II is working with national, provincial and town authorities to improve urban planning, maintenance and service delivery.
Jimson Tanangada, who attended the handover of nine projects in Gizo, highlighted the importance of investment in Gizo and its impact on the economic future of Western Province.
“Our town is not only a place where people live. Gizo is a centre of commerce, tourism, fisheries, transportation and community life in Western Province.
“As we look towards the future, I believe these projects will leave a long-term footprint in the lives of our communities and generations yet to come,” Tanangada said.
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Mr Jeff Roach said that CAUSE II is delivering practical infrastructure while creating economic opportunities and strengthening local capacity to improve services in urban communities.
“CAUSE II is helping communities across Solomon Islands improve access to climate-resilient infrastructure and services, while expanding economic opportunities for women, young people and people with disability,” he said.
World Bank representative Ifeta Smajic also highlighted CAUSE II’s positive impact on Mrs Vani Vuto Lizo, a community worker from Noro.
Lizo after completing CAUSE II’s Redi4Waka training, applied her new skills on project sites and secured full-time employment.
“Vani’s story reminds us that community work is not only about the finished product. It is about people’s motivation and their journeys to gain and apply skills in the service of their communities. As Vani herself said, “if it weren’t for the CAUSE II project, I would still be on the lookout for a job” [Sapos CAUSE II Project nomoa bae mi no save faendim waka]”.
The CAUSE II Project is implemented by the Solomon Islands Government and jointly financed by Australia and the World Bank.

Workplace sports are providing Solomon Power and Solomon Telekom staff an opportunity to improve their physical fitness, strengthen teamwork and promote healthier lifestyles beyond their daily professional responsibilities.
The two organisations recently held their annual Staff Games at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS), bringing employees together for friendly sporting competition and social interaction, according to a report published by the National Sports Council (NSC) on October 14.
Now in its fourth year, the initiative highlights how sport can contribute to workplace well-being by encouraging employees to remain physically active while building stronger relationships among colleagues.
This year’s programme also introduced touch rugby as a new activity, adding variety to the Games and giving staff another opportunity to participate in sport.
Solomon Power Social Committee president Linford Karani described the initiative as an important opportunity for employees to engage in healthy activities, improve physical fitness and strengthen teamwork, emphasising that “health is wealth”.
Similarly, Telekom HR and Business Support Team member Audrina Aruafu highlighted the wider benefits of the Games, saying the initiative went beyond competition to promote staff motivation, team bonding, health and well-being.
The annual gathering demonstrates how sporting activities can create opportunities for employees from different organisations to connect outside their usual working environments, while encouraging physical activity as part of everyday life.
Both organisations acknowledged the NSC for supporting the Games at SINIS, expressing hope that the initiative will continue and expand in the coming years.
The NSC has continued to encourage companies, organisations and workplaces to utilise its sporting facilities to support active lifestyles and build healthier, more connected communities.
As the Staff Games enter their fifth year in 2027, the initiative provides an opportunity for the two organisations to build on the programme’s existing foundation and explore further ways of encouraging employee participation in sport.

Malaita’s Provincial Education Coordinator, Andy Siarani, has urged parents to take greater responsibility in supporting their children’s education.
Siarani, who was the guest of honour at Gwaidingale Community High School’s 30th graduation ceremony, delivered the message in his address to students, parents, guardians and other attendees.
He said strong parental support and a solid family background are essential for students to succeed in their education.
Siarani warned that when parents failed to fulfil their roles and responsibilities, their children’s chances of success in school could be affected.
“This is very important, and I must strongly emphasise this to you, my good parents. This school is my school, and I have witnessed this years back,” he said.
He said that parents have an important role to play in supporting their children throughout their education.
Siarani also referred to biblical teachings, reminding parents that they have a responsibility to fulfil their duties towards their children.
He also reiterated comments made by the school principal, highlighting the importance of support from parents and the home environment in helping students understand the knowledge and skills taught at school.
“Everything taught in the school is from the white man’s language, and for our students to learn and succeed in school, it must come first from the parents and home teaching,” he said.
He added that teachers are there to guide students during their time at school, while parents also need to provide support and encouragement at home.
Siarani congratulated the graduates on reaching this important milestone and wished them success in their upcoming national examinations in the coming weeks.
The 30th graduation ceremony was attended by the West Kwaio Constituency representative, a health representative, chiefs, church leaders, the school chairman and Provincial Education Coordinator Andy Siarani, who was also the guest of honour.

The prolonged drought driven by the 2026 El Niño phenomenon has triggered severe water and food shortages forcing the total closure of schools on Moli mainland and Moli island.
Local resident Anthony P. Telovae reported that both Moli Primary School on Moli mainland and Moli Secondary School on Moli island, northwest Choiseul province have been forced to suspend classes due to the shortage of water supplies within the school compounds.
Mr Telovae said the primary division on the mainland shut its doors two weeks ago, while forms one and two of the secondary division suspended classes last week.
“Things are getting worse for us at the moment, only Form Three students are currently allowed on campus so they can prepare for their upcoming examinations at the end of this month,” Telovae said.
He said the crisis has left local dams and water supplies running critically low, forcing residents to walk deep into bush streams to fetch water for their households.
“Beyond water shortages, the month-long absence of rain is now destroying local food security as gardens begin to dry up,” he said.
Expressing deep concern for the community, Telovae issued an urgent appeal to provincial leaders and national emergency management sectors to intervene.
“The government authorities, through the provincial government and the disaster council, should act now,” he urged.
The crisis aligns with recent warnings from the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS). In its latest El Niño 2026 awareness update, SIMS cautioned that the climate pattern would bring drastically reduced rainfall, severe water shortages, and threats to agricultural livelihoods across the archipelago.
SIMS continues to urge citizens to conserve water, safeguard food gardens, and closely monitor official weather updates. The meteorological service, alongside the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), is actively requesting communities to report localised El Niño impacts directly to their official channels to help coordinate relief efforts.
