Taro, Choiseul, 24 October 2026: The Premier of Choiseul Province, Hon. Harrison Pitakaka, has highlighted the proposed relocation of Choiseul Bay Provincial Secondary School from its current site at Lot 9 to a new site at Lot 277 as an important investment in the province’s education future.
Speaking at the school’s 2026 graduation ceremony, the Premier said the proposal forms part of the wider Choiseul Bay Township Project and aims to provide facilities suited to the future needs of secondary education.
The graduation was attended by Premier Pitakaka and his full Provincial Executive, members of the Provincial Assembly, the Deputy Speaker, the Provincial Secretary and all heads of division.
Choiseul Bay is the province’s only provincial secondary school and has educated generations of Choiseulians who contribute to their communities and the development of Solomon Islands.
The Premier reported an allocation of SBD 5 million this year for township bridge works providing access towards the proposed relocation site. He explained that this access infrastructure is separate from the funding required to construct and equip the school.

The 2023 concept plan identifies approximately 18 hectares at Lot 277. Proposed facilities include classrooms, dormitories, staff housing, science and practical-learning facilities, dining areas and sports spaces.
The preliminary concept estimate was approximately SBD 102 million. The Premier emphasised that this figure requires review and does not represent a final construction cost or confirmation of full funding.
Detailed designs, environmental approval, development consent and planning for essential services remain necessary before the proposal can advance.
“We must communicate honestly about approvals, funding and timing,” the Premier said.
He also stressed that students at the existing school must continue receiving support while relocation planning progresses, including maintenance of facilities and improvements to current learning conditions.
Addressing the graduation theme, “Empowering Minds, Building Futures: Rising Through Challenges,” the Premier called for education investment that directly improves students’ learning and wellbeing.

“Classrooms need suitable materials; teachers need professional support; and students need safe places to study, sleep and play,” he said.
The Premier highlighted reliable water and sanitation, teacher wellbeing, transparent school spending and support for learners affected by poverty, disability and distance.
He also encouraged stronger careers guidance to help students understand opportunities in university education, technical and vocational training, apprenticeships and enterprise.
On the Government’s Free Education reform, he said schools and families would need clear information about approved provisions and their responsibilities as the policy and implementation arrangements are finalised.
Congratulating the graduating class, the Premier urged students to use their education responsibly and contribute to Choiseul wherever their future takes them.
“As you build your future, remember Choiseul. Keep our languages and culture alive, care for our environment and use your learning to serve others.”

The Government of Australia has provided an additional SBD10 million to support road rehabilitation and maintenance in Makira-Ulawa Province through the Solomon Islands National Transport Fund.
The funding was announced during a handover ceremony held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara this morning, attended by the Minister for Infrastructure Development, Honourable Ricky Fuo’o, the Minister for Finance and Treasury, Hon. Rexson Ramofafia and the Premier of Makira-Ulawa Province, Honourable Stanley Siapu.
Speaking at the ceremony, Premier Siapu expressed gratitude to the Australian Government and people for their continued support through the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership.
He described the funding announcement as a significant milestone in Makira-Ulawa’s journey towards sustainable economic growth, improved connectivity and social transformation.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Makira-Ulawa Province, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Government and people of Australia,” Premier Siapu said.
He said the partnership continued to make a meaningful difference in the lives of rural Solomon Islanders.
Meanwhile, Minister Fuo’o acknowledged Australia’s contribution of AUD1.8 million, equivalent to approximately SBD10 million, to the National Transport Fund.
He said the funding demonstrated Australia’s confidence in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the National Transport Fund to deliver infrastructure that improves people’s lives.
“This contribution clearly demonstrates the confidence and trust the Government of Australia has in my Ministry and the National Transport Fund to deliver infrastructures that improves the lives of our people,” Fuo’o said.
The additional support is expected to strengthen road connectivity and support economic activities in the targeted provinces as the Solomon Islands continues to improve its transport infrastructure.
The support, worth AUD1.8 million, will build on previous road infrastructure projects in Honiara and Malaita, with the next phase focusing on improving road access in Makira-Ulawa.
The investment forms part of more than 100 kilometres of additional road maintenance and rehabilitation works planned across Makira-Ulawa, Honiara and Malaita.
The projects will aim to improve community connectivity, strengthen access to markets and essential services, and create employment opportunities for local people.
All projects will be delivered by Solomon Islands contractors, supporting local employment, skills development and business growth.
Kilometre Posts to Improve Road Identification Along Henderson–Mberande Corridor
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), is continuing efforts to improve road connectivity, accessibility and safety along the Henderson–Mberande Road corridor through the installation of kilometre posts.
The kilometre posts will serve as important road identification markers, providing clear distance information at designated intervals along the road. Once installed, they will help motorists and other road users identify their locations and determine distances along the corridor.
Each kilometre post displays a distance measurement in kilometres, as the reference point for measuring distances along the road corridor. This will help road users and relevant authorities identify specific locations more easily when travelling, reporting incidents or carrying out road maintenance activities.
MID Permanent Secretary Mike Qaqara said the installation of kilometre posts was an important supporting measure to improve road identification, assist road users and strengthen road management.
“Kilometre posts provide essential location information that helps motorists and authorities identify specific sections of the road. This is particularly important for reporting road incidents, coordinating emergency responses and carrying out road maintenance activities,” Mr. Qaqara said.
He added that the initiative complements the Government’s ongoing efforts, through MID and its development partners, to improve road safety, accessibility and the long-term sustainability of road infrastructure for the benefit of communities and road users.
Mr. Qaqara also called on the public to take collective responsibility for protecting road furniture and other infrastructure installed along the corridor.
Road furniture, including kilometre posts, road signs, safety barriers and streetlights, is installed to improve road safety and benefit everyone. We urge all road users and community members to respect and protect these facilities and refrain from damaging, removing or vandalising them.
Protecting public infrastructure is a shared responsibility. We all have a role to play in ensuring these facilities remain in good condition and continue to serve present and future generations,” he said.
The kilometre posts will also support road maintenance teams and relevant authorities in identifying specific road sections during inspections, reporting road conditions and planning maintenance activities.
The Henderson–Mberande Road upgrade works are being implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under LMCP, a joint initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government. The project aims to improve transport connectivity and accessibility while supporting safer and more reliable road infrastructure for communities in Guadalcanal Province.

Minister of Finance and Treasury, Rexon Ramofafia, has called for proactive policy coordination, stronger financial buffers, and local evidence-based research to protect the nation’s economy against intensifying external and climate shocks.
Delivering the keynote address at the 3rd CBSI-ADB-APAEA International Research Conference at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara today, Minister Ramofafia emphasised that global economic instability is no longer a distant threat.
“It directly hits daily market prices, fuel costs, and family budgets across the country,” he said.
The high-level conference, themed “Navigating Global Economic Shocks: Monetary Policy, Exchange Rate Dynamics, and Macroeconomic Stability in Small Open Economies,” was jointly organised by the Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Asia-Pacific Applied Economics Association (APAEA).
The one-day event brought together senior government officials, central bankers, private sector leaders, academics, and development partners.
Minister Ramofafia noted that while energy markets were relatively calm last year, today’s outlook is plagued by geopolitical tensions and environmental threats, highlighting the compounding pressures facing the country.
He cited the recent devastation caused by Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Maila across Western and Choiseul provinces, alongside a looming “super El Niño” event, as plain reminders of the nation’s vulnerability.
To build economic resilience, the Minister outlined three critical priorities for policymakers:
1. Early and Coordinated Action: Pointing to temporary tax relief implemented during recent fuel price surges and the October 20 meteorological drought warning, he stressed that responding early is far less costly than repairing damage after a crisis hits.
2. Strengthening Macroeconomic Buffers: While CBSI’s foreign reserves remain stable, Ramofafia set an ambitious benchmark to push reserves toward USD 1 billion. He also confirmed that the government is preparing plans for a Sovereign Wealth Fund to preserve proceeds from extractive resources for future generations.
3. Building Regional Research Capacity: Emphasising the importance of local data, he urged Pacific central banks and institutions to continue investing in domestic expertise to guide policy decisions tailored to small island economies.
“Good research can’t change the price of fuel or the path of El Niño, but it can change how we prepare and respond,” Minister Ramofafia said.

Opening the event, Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) Acting Governor David K.C. Quan stressed that external instabilities, ranging from Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions to El Niño impacts, directly reach local shores.
Highlighting severe energy vulnerabilities, Quan noted that Honiara fuel prices have escalated sharply from $9.54 per liter last year up to $14 per liter, underscoring the urgent necessity for robust macroeconomic defense strategies and policy-driven resilience.
Delivering the official opening address, Minister of Finance and Treasury Rex Ramofafia pointed to compound domestic pressures, citing the devastation left by Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Maila in Western and Choiseul provinces, alongside the October 20 meteorological drought warning.
Ramofafia outlined decisive government countermeasures, including temporary fuel tax exemptions, ongoing efforts to fortify foreign reserves toward a USD 1 billion milestone, and plans for a national sovereign wealth fund.
He noted that four central bank studies presented today, covering trade competitiveness, exchange rate pass-through on staple goods like rice, financial inclusion, and external capital buffers, provide vital frameworks for national fiscal planning.
Representing institutional partners, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Principal Economist Dr. John Beirne and Asia-Pacific Applied Economics Association (APAEA) President Prof. Paresh Narayan commended CBSI for its sustained three-year research leadership.
Both leaders emphasised that the true measure of conference success is not simply the volume of published papers, but the number of practical policy decisions influenced.
They lauded collaborative initiatives empowering central banks across the Pacific, including Vanuatu, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Samoa, to build local research capacity, train econometrics teams, and foster thriving regional knowledge economies.
The day-long workshop featured active panel discussions among government heads, private sector representatives, development partners, and student participants, charting a collaborative, resilient path forward for Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region.

Farmers and agri-business entrepreneurs in Guadalcanal are gaining new skills to turn agricultural products into marketable goods through an agribusiness training initiative aimed at strengthening the agriculture sector in Solomon Islands.
The seven-day training, held from October 19 to 23 and October 26 to 27, brought together eight participants who completed their training and presented their innovative business plans in a competition at the conclusion of the programme.
The initiative is a partnership between the Solomon Islands Government, through the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It is funded by the European Union.
Operating under the theme, “Growing Sustainable Agribusinesses through Innovation, Incubation and Market Linkages,” the programme aims to establish a leading centre for agribusiness innovation, enterprise incubation and sustainable commercial agriculture in Solomon Islands.
Speaking in a media interview, Agri-Business Manager Martin Hoasihere said the training was designed to help farmers improve the quality of their agricultural products and learn how to develop them into successful businesses.
He explained that farmers were encouraged to go beyond growing and harvesting crops for household consumption by learning how to process, package, label and market their products.
Using cassava as an example, Mr Hoasihere said farmers could create greater business opportunities by adding value to the crop instead of selling or consuming it in its raw form.
The programme seeks to strengthen business skills among agricultural entrepreneurs, promote value-added products, improve access to finance and investment, create local employment and increase the country’s export potential.
It also aims to support climate-resilient agricultural enterprises and contribute to long-term national food security.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the business plan presentation competition, which recognised participants’ ability to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their business ideas.
Winner Esther Tali Suti, owner of Pure Solomon Production, said she was honoured to receive the award and had not expected to win the competition.
Mrs Suti said the training had provided her with valuable knowledge and improved her skills in business development planning and presentation.
She said the experience had strengthened her vision of expanding her business and distributing its products throughout the province in the future.
The successful completion of the Guadalcanal training marks progress in the initiative, with similar workshops planned for Western and Malaita provinces.
The programme is expected to provide more farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills needed to develop sustainable agribusinesses, improve local products and create greater economic opportunities for communities across Solomon Islands.

Seventy-five pupils at Arohane Primary School in Makira-Ulawa Province have taken part in a school sports and recreation programme that aims to support their physical, social and personal development.
The activity, held at Arohane Community Sports Ground on Monday, brought together boys and girls from different grade levels for a morning of games and recreational activities supported by the National Sports Council (NSC).
The programme involved 39 boys and 36 girls, divided into three age groups to accommodate their different stages of development.
The groups comprised 25 junior pupils aged six to nine, 31 intermediate pupils aged 10 to 12, and 19 senior pupils aged 13 to 15.
Beyond providing an opportunity for physical activity, the session was designed to help pupils improve their fundamental movement skills, build confidence and learn the importance of cooperation through play.
It also encouraged awareness of healthy eating and the need to balance physical exercise with academic learning.
Arohane Primary School head teacher Janet Siola welcomed the initiative, highlighting the value of bringing pupils from different classes together through shared activities.
The programme was supported by the NSC’s Sports and Recreation Development Department, which works to strengthen opportunities for sport and recreation in schools and communities.
NSC Sports and Recreation Development Coordinator for Makira-Ulawa Province Edward Quiroquiro said introducing children to sport in their school environment could help establish positive habits from an early age.
“By bringing sport and recreation into the school environment, we want to help children develop positive habits, learn to work with others and enjoy being physically active. These experiences can contribute to their development both at school and in their communities,” Mr Quiroquiro said.
The initiative also provided an opportunity for pupils of different ages and sporting abilities to participate in activities outside their normal classroom environment.
The NSC department said it will continue to work with Arohane Primary School and community leaders to support opportunities for children to participate in sport and recreation.
The programme forms part of wider efforts to use sport and recreation to support children’s development and strengthen participation at school and community level.

The Community-Based Resource Management (CBRM) training for provincial fisheries officers from across the country is progressing well on its second day in Auki, Malaita Province.
The training focuses on the Check-in on Status Tool, a key monitoring tool used to assess the progress and effectiveness of CBRM initiatives in local communities.
The project aims to build the capacity of fisheries practitioners and strengthen the monitoring and implementation of CBRM programmes across the country.
According to WorldFish analyst Meshach Sukulu, the first day focused on understanding the tool and learning how to collect and record data consistently based on evidence.
He said the second day focused on quantitative analysis and enabled participants to analyse scores and identify trends in community progress.
“Our session today is on analysing quantitative data. This will help participants understand how to analyse scores and identify trends in their communities,” he said.
Sukulu said on the final day of the training, participants will learn qualitative analysis techniques to interpret community feedback, identify key themes, and capture lessons and insights from the field.
He described the training as a valuable opportunity for participants to share experiences from their respective provinces and learn from one another.
Sukulu further said the training will help strengthen the national network of fisheries officers supporting community-based fisheries management throughout the country.

THE Western Provincial Government (WPG) has warned business operators against unfairly increasing the prices of bottled drinking water and other essential goods amid ongoing drought conditions affecting communities across the province.
The warning follows recent price increases for cartons of bottled water in Gizo, where residents are facing growing difficulties accessing safe drinking water due to prolonged dry conditions associated with the current El Niño event.
In a notice issued through the Provincial Secretariat, the government reminded all business operators that compliance with national legislation, including the Consumer Protection Act and the Price Control Act, is a legal requirement for maintaining a valid business licence.
The notice state that all commercial operations in Western Province must comply with the conditions governing business licences under the Western Province Business Licence Ordinance 2012.
“The business must at all times be operated in compliance with all relevant Acts and subsidiary legislation of Solomon Islands, ordinances and subsidiary legislation and policies of the Western Province,” the statement said.
It said licensed businesses must maintain fair and reasonable prices for bottled drinking water and other essential goods, particularly during the current period of hardship.
The notice warns operators against unjustified price increases that could place additional financial pressure on residents already affected by water shortages and the drought.
Businesses have also been reminded to display prices clearly, ensure transparency in all transactions and act responsibly in meeting the needs of the public.
The notice further calls on business operators to cooperate with government authorities to ensure communities maintain access to safe drinking water.
It said the provincial administration will continue to monitor the situation and could engage relevant authorities, including consumer protection and trade agencies, if concerns about unfair pricing practices arise.
The notice state that non-compliance could result in administrative action, including the issuance of formal notices of breach, suspension or cancellation of business licences, and referrals to the Consumer Affairs and Price Control Division of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration for enforcement under national law.
The warning comes as Western Province continues to experience prolonged dry conditions, with water shortages affecting households and essential services in Gizo and surrounding communities.
The provincial government is urging businesses to act responsibly and ensure that residents can access essential supplies at fair and reasonable prices during the ongoing drought.

A local cocoa farmer from Central Guadalcanal is urging the government to provide greater support to the agricultural sector after successfully shifting his operations to preserve the value of his yield.
Elsie Worituna, 50, of Malatoha village, has spent decades managing his family farm, taking over the operations from his father.
After years of selling wet cocoa beans, Worituna transitioned to producing and selling dried cocoa beans in 2000 to maximise his profits and prevent value loss. He now operates two cocoa dryers on his property.
Worituna previously supplied his dried beans to Wings before switching his supply line to the Commodities Export Marketing Authority (CEMA) around 2024.
Despite his operational shift, Worituna noted that local cocoa farming remains highly challenging. Low market prices continue to restrict farmers from generating enough capital to reinvest in and expand their crops. Additionally, a lack of reliable transportation complicates getting goods to market.
However, Worituna praised CEMA for its ongoing interventions, noting that the authority has been highly responsive to farmers requests.
CEMA has provided critical equipment, including storage drums and other processing resources, to support local operations.
Worituna is now calling on the government to increase its recognition and financial backing of the farming community, stressing that targeted state support is vital to sustain and expand the country’s agricultural sector.

The Health Promotion Department team from Kilu’ufi Hospital is conducting a three-day health promotion training workshop at Sinamauri Rural Health Centre (RHC) in West Kwaio, Malaita Province.
The workshop aims to address the high rates of disease infections in rural communities and promote healthy practices to help prevent and reduce the spread of diseases.
In an interview, Sinamauri RHC nurse-in-charge Maxwell Oloisae said the training is significant and is to help communities identify common diseases and understand how to prevent and manage them.
Oloisae said the training began on Monday and is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
He said representatives from five communities within the clinic’s catchment area attending the workshop.
He added that the training will equip participants with the knowledge and skills they need to practise healthy measures and prevent the spread of diseases in their respective communities.
“Actually, it will help us because the communities will learn and practise what they have learned in their communities,” he said.
Oloisae said the workshop is progressing well and expressed confidence that participants will apply the knowledge gained to improve health practices in their communities.
